If 80% of your meals consisted of a can of soda and a small bag of peanuts or mustard pretzels, I'm sure you could easily reduce your budget to that amount!

About 12 years ago, when I got out of the Air Force, I briefly landed a job in inflight catering at Dulles Airport. The decline of food service was already beginning to show for domestic service. I worked the international side, and I primarily made the Western-style meals for All Nippon Airways. (The Japanese meals were then contracted to a DC-area restaurant.) At least the food was good (considering it was a 14-hour flight from IAD-NRT (with a fuel stop in ANC).

I don't know about anyone else, but I've noticed that (on the UA flights I take) there are no more mustard pretzels but this thing called "Safari Mix" which is pretzels & cheese crackers. Not impressive at all. I would LOVE cheddar goldfish!

Matt,

I would not argue with that, Safari Mix is a FAR step above the dreaded mustard pretzels. Jut merely commenting that cheddar goldfish would be a good step up from Safari Mix which, while alright, is a bit bland IMHO.

My last CO flight was "gourmet"!!! Instead of pretzels, they served plantains.

My most frequent "meal" has been Rold Gold pretzels and a soda.

I've taken to carrying those multi-grain bars, especially on the 4-5 hour flights where you may get (wahoo!) 2 SODAs!

Actually, they also saved what little sanity I retain on a recent trip. A mom was travelling with her 2 year-old, and the poor child (I say that now - it was a different adjective at the time) was flipping out.

Multi-grain bars to the rescue! After checking with Mom, I gave the child two. She was much happier after that.

At $2.69 for 8, it was certainly the best 67 cents I ever spent on travel!
