airline caterers
(poor translation by Rudi from the "Tages Anzeiger", Zurich, may-11-99)
Market Shares 1998: (total volume SFr 14'000'000'000 = US$ 9'333'000'000) * 33% LSG/Sky Chefs (Germany/US; LSG = LH "dominated") * 13% Gate Gourmet (Switzerland, SR-Groupe) * 9% Dobbs (US) * 4% Alfa (Great Britain) * 4% Servair (France) * 33% All others average meal-costs per head of passenger/flight-segment for "inner-US"-flights 1998: $ 2.89 (1992: $ 3.95). I don't think Gisela would appreciate if I would reduce our household-budget per meal to that amount (and I don't think I would appreciate what would be served then ...). If 80% of your meals consisted of a can of soda and a small bag of peanuts or mustard pretzels, I'm sure you could easily reduce your budget to that amount!
Then of course, who the heck wants to eat mustard pretzels? |
Yes, who the heck Wald eat mustard pretzels??? YUCK http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/frown.gif

Mustard pretzels... yecccchhh!!!!
About 12 years ago, when I got out of the Air Force, I briefly landed a job in inflight catering at Dulles Airport. The decline of food service was already beginning to show for domestic service. I worked the international side, and I primarily made the Western-style meals for All Nippon Airways. (The Japanese meals were then contracted to a DC-area restaurant.) At least the food was good (considering it was a 14-hour flight from IAD-NRT (with a fuel stop in ANC). I've long since retired my chef's hat and apron, though! http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif ------------------ AlphaSigOU Causa latet vis est notissima - the cause is hidden, the results are well-known. |

Suddenly I have this terrible taste in my mouth....
|
I am encouraged that Matt Wald's mustard Pretzels are being pushed aside for Pepperidge Farms chedder GOLDFISHES!
"I love the fishes! They're so Delicious! Gotta Go fishes!" (recent Pepperidge Farms jingle!) OK Now give us caffine addicts the CHOICE of PEPSI or COKE like on American!!!! |
Which would you choose? (Maybe we can get you a promotional fee).
|
I don't know about anyone else, but I've noticed that (on the UA flights I take) there are no more mustard pretzels but this thing called "Safari Mix" which is pretzels & cheese crackers. Not impressive at all. I would LOVE cheddar goldfish!

Anna, I am just so grateful that UA took my advice on the MPs that I have chosen to remain silent on the Safari Mix issue...

Matt,
I would not argue with that, Safari Mix is a FAR step above the dreaded mustard pretzels. Jut merely commenting that cheddar goldfish would be a good step up from Safari Mix which, while alright, is a bit bland IMHO. ------------------ Regards, - Anna |
My last CO flight was "gourmet"!!! Instead of pretzels, they served plantains.
|
My most frequent "meal" has been Rold Gold pretzels and a soda.
I've taken to carrying those multi-grain bars, especially on the 4-5 hour flights where you may get (wahoo!) 2 SODAs! Actually, they also saved what little sanity I retain on a recent trip. A mom was travelling with her 2 year-old, and the poor child (I say that now - it was a different adjective at the time) was flipping out. Multi-grain bars to the rescue! After checking with Mom, I gave the child two. She was much happier after that. At $2.69 for 8, it was certainly the best 67 cents I ever spent on travel! |
