El Al and Points for Pints
OK, MM because you asked for it....
The details from the 2009 El Al ff mile opportunity. But please check to see that you still get points. Magen David Adom's blood services are once again predicting a shortage of blood units this summer. But this year they have found a creative solution aimed at encouraging people to donate blood: Each donor will receive free membership in El Al airline's frequent flyer club, plus a gift of 20 frequent flyer miles. Upon donating the blood, donors will be given a card containing a special link through which they will be able to log into El Al's website and register to the club for free, thus saving the $20 registration fee. They will also get the 20 points. Donors who are already members will win the 20-point gift. From here on, each donation will earn the donor another 20 points.

This Day in History - July 15, 1999

NEW YORK (CNNfn) - In an attempt to dig up more traffic for the struggling Daytona Beach International Airport, Delta Air Lines is trying to drum up a little more business among the dead. Beginning Aug. 1, the Atlanta-based airline will give funeral directors 500 frequent flier miles for every coffin they ship out of the Volusia County-owned airport. Delta also plans to award two free round-trip tickets to local funeral directors who generate $5,000 in business with the airline during this fiscal quarter. The program was devised by Dennis McGee, Daytona Beach Airport's director of aviation, as a way to reverse the trend of airlines departing the county airport for the much larger Orlando International Airport an hour down the road. "It's a great idea," said Big John, a Volusia County Council member. "We have a lot of small airports all around the country that are getting killed by the big guys. This is our attempt to fight back." |
Nigerian Scheme Alert
Arik Air Nigeria Launches its Frequent Flyer Programme
I quote: "As well as earning and redeeming on flights, the scheme also allows customers to redeem miles for excess baggage vouchers. Arik currently offers one of the largest allowances in the industry (2 x 30kgs on long-haul flights) and Arik WingsPlus will afford even more opportunity to add another 30kgs to the allowance." Only in Nigeria would a frequent flyer program be called a scheme! |
When she was 70 my mom was 7,000 miles short of a trip to Germany, so she prepaid her funeral using her US Airways branded CC.
She is now 79 and trying to come up with 4,000 miles. I told her about the US Mint but she thinks that is too much trouble.

The concept of paying baggage charges with FF miles is interesting, though. Maybe US carriers could adopt it? |
True, but over here you don't put the words "Nigerian" and "Scheme" in the same sentence.:p

Only sounds odd to a Yank who hasn't spent much time in what used to be the British Empire. This non-pejorative sense of "scheme," meaning "plan" or "program(me)," is standard in British English. Since Nigeria was a British colony for so long, that's what their usage is based on.

Can you combine this with buying a coffin at Costco online with a credit card and then returning it for a cash refund?
