Wait... you like cheap sushi and going through security at the airport??? WOW - I guess there really is something for everyone. Heck, about a week ago there was a columnist at Newsweek or Time or whatever that said he actually liked paying taxes!!! WOW again.
And the security thing i was saying that i do the same thing he does about looking at the different people and predicting which line is the best although it's is very interesting to see people try a get out of carrying some stuff on planes. I hate paying taxes though I can understand why we need to...USA #1... |
Trying to predict what course your life will take at this point is too difficult. You will find that you end up winging it a lot and you never know what will pop up.
I trained as a chemist (all I wanted to do since about the age of 12), but at 21 I decided I did not want to get a grad degree in that field, and in 1980 when I graduated there were no jobs (thanks, Jimmy Carter!). So I ended up starting an IBM computer clone and consulting business, which would have been unpredictable 12 months prior. When I sold my business in 1992, I moved with my wife to Baltimore so she could do her postdoc. That was very unpredictable. Likewise when she got a professorship in Chicago two years later. And then she got pregnant in 1996 and I ended up being a stay-at-home dad, which would have been 100% unpredictable to anyone who had ever known me. The main thing in college is to learn how to think, write, and communicate clearly; especially useful is the ability to figure out quickly when someone is talking nonsense. There will always be many opportunities for people who can do that. Scientific training (or engineering) I found to be absolutely ideal. Most psych, sociology, "communications," art history, "grievance studies," etc. majors can't reason worth a damn and smart employers recognize this. So those kids end up slinging coffee. Do something you like and you'll be well situated to travel, even if you have to pay for it yourself. And travel extensively while you are young, before you get tied down as an adult. |
