Good for you for getting started so young!

I guess I have a different perspective on sticking with one airline than an earlier post. I think there's a lot of benefit to moving up the ranks of the loyalty program, but it's important to pick an airline based on its routes in terms of your location and desired destinations, as well as the strength of its airline alliance.

Happy to share my tipsheet on getting started. You can find it at http://www.scribd.com/doc/17745143/F...Flier-Tipsheet.

Hey everyone, quick question, I have ben researching getting a credit card, that will begin to help me earn miles. Does anyone know about the Visa Capital One Venture One Rewards card? Or how about the Miles by Discover card? These two cards seem to have good rewards and benefits, but i couldn't find any threads relating to discussion about them on FT.
Thanks!

Sorry for the delay in responding to you (post #15). The answer is yes. And, in fact, you receive a premium for most transfers. I use American only, but here's how it works: You use your SPG Amex whenever possible and receive 1 SPG point for each dollar spent. When you reach 20,000 points, you can transfer the points to your AAdvantage account and receive a bonus of 5,000 miles, for a total of 25,000 miles. If you'd used your Citibank AAdvantage MasterCard, you would have received 1 mile for every dollar spent (unless, of course, there's some special promotion.

You can visit www.spg.com and see the conversion ratio of points to miles for all participating airline programs.

So let me get this straight: With an AmEx SPG card I can redeem my miles for hotel rooms, but it is also possible to transfer the points I earn on the SPG card into an FFP miles account?

Yes. You need to check how transfer works to your preferred airline program, since the transfer ratio differs. For example, 20,000 SPG points transfers to 25,000 American Airlines miles. But I don't think the transfer ratio is nearly so favorable with Continental.
