It seems pretty obvious to me that you should use the miles.

But remember that these calculations are subject to any individuals preferences which only you can decide. if for instance you are the type of person that says "I insist on traveliing first class or business class and I will pay whatever it cost me" then the value of a mile to you will be pretty high. Why? Because you will be paying 8K for a ticket to Europe and therefore a 100K mile award will get you 8 cents per mile.

I however would never pay that kind of money for a business class ticket and find it almost impossible to get even two cents per mile. My best case scenario for using miles is probably a $1000 ticket to Europe in the summer for 55K miles. Or maybe a $700 ticket to Hawaii for 35K miles. At best I am getting two cents a mile and really its less because I have to deal with highly limited availability and also the miles I lost by not buying a ticket. That's why for my personal needs I really have trouble justifying more then 1.2 cents per mile.

You need to ask yourself what will you use the miles for. If you would pay serious bucks for a business ticket to Europe or Asia then the miles might be worth a lot. If you don't care that much about premium class travel then it's hard to get that much value from miles and I think that its obvious you should cash in miles here.

I would choose Option 1. If you choose option 2 you are using 66,000 miles to save about $1,100. That's about $0.017 per mile. (Why 66,000? You are redeeming only 55,000 but you are also forgoing the opportunity to earn 11,000 Dividend Miles.)

The ticket that the tour operator buys for you may not be eligible to earn miles. It will depend on the fare code, and you should investigate how many miles the fare would earn if credited to LAN's program versus another OneWorld program such as American Airlines AAdvantage.

I would choose option # 2. By redeeming 55K miles or 66K miles per your math he would be getting a value of 1600/65K = ~2.5 cpm which is not bad at all for economy tics. Higher cpms are only possible for C or J travel IMO.

the way I see it opt #1 & #3 are out since the OP would be paying .15 per UA mile and .10 per AA mile with LAN

quick TransCons can yield the OP at least 2x the EQMs for the same $$, over 3x with UA or US. Heck Im sure $1600 spent on transcons can yield 25k if done right

as for #1 not all TO tkts are able to earn Miles

I agree. I could buy two RT tickets to Europe for $1600, earning lots more miles, and having twice the fun!

Thanks again for your feedback. I'm going with option 2.
