'Crazy' Expensive August Prices to Germany
I'm trying to book a flight to Germany in late July/Early August, and am seeing huge 1k plus prices - so here's my totally stupid question - is this normal for summer or is it a side effect of fuel prices etc.?

It's the new normal - has been for several years now in high season.
The only sub-$1000 summer fares West Coast to Europe are available to buy in winter, in unannounced sales. |

"Crazy" as in "really, really good--almost too good to be true kinda' crazy". $1k is normal. Paying 1K may be crazy :) , but it's a sort of normal fare. BUT, in deference to the OP, there are threads here on Flyertalk about "crazy" (as in, below normal, as in "jump on it now") fares to Europe in August booked thru "crazy" last minute specials to Europe on sites like www.site59.com, etc. Not completely unheard of. Paris I think was one, IIRC. |
There are OTOH, a lot of low business fares out there this summer.

We are seeing the same problem with summer airfares to England this year. We can usually find a summer sale for around $850 from West coast to England, but this year they are all above $1000, so we may not go this year.
Not even LAX - LON, in the past, one of the cheaper routes. |
