Kiwi Flyer Oct 21, 2009 12:44 pm

tht and I flew AKL-LAX-LHR-HKG-AKL in under 60 hours all on one airline, Air NZ (and I additionally flew LHR-BHD-LHR during the LHR transit).

Theoretically it is possible to do quicker in the reverse direction but Air NZ won't allow this on a single ticket due to the connection time at LHR.

Methinks it impossible even with no restriction on carriers.

If you look at the following itinerary:

Dubai to Brisbane: 7441 miles 14 hrs 15 min
Emirates Flight EK434 on an Airbus A340
Departs Thur, Feb 18 10:25a 14 hrs 15 min
Arrives Fri, Feb 19 6:40a

Brisbane to Los Angeles: 7163 miles 12 hrs 55 min
American Airlines Flight AA7380 on a Boeing 747
Departs Fri, Feb 19 12:05p 12 hrs 55 min
Arrives 7:00a

Los Angeles to Dubai, : 8323 miles 15 hrs 45 min
Emirates Flight EK216 on a Boeing 777
Departs Fri, Feb 19 4:00p 15 hrs 45 min
Arrives Sat, Feb 20 7:45p

The total distance is 22927 miles and the scheduled flight time alone is 42hr 55min giving you a maximum of 1hr 10min for a minimum of 2 international connections even if you found flights that aligned. Unless you can find a long flight that makes a very short technical stop for refueling eg in Anchorage,I would say it can't be done. Even 1 stop through flights like SYD-LHR usually stop for at least 1hr 30mins at their intermediate points.

re

yes time includes ground stops its from airport of departure, wheels leave ground to arrival at same airport wheels touch the ground, i have seen copy of schedule and all details are on it including captains signature and sign off times, pretty smart actually,

i think with regards to subsonic travel guiness would prob not be interested in accepting this as an offficial world record attempt, the secret is obviously to attempt to beat the record without concorde available now that would be some feat!!

tips i was given is check ahead, weather, some areas i.e japan could add severe delay to schedule), pending strikes by airlines etc, and buy as many tickets for the next connecting airport as poss (i.e if just miss a connection from say bangkok to tokyo by thai airways, have a ticket for the ana flight 10 mins later) that sort of thing anyway

According to this: http://www.concordesst.com/history/events/sia.html (Interesting to see a Concorde with Singapore Airlines livery)

LHR-BAH-SIN only took 9 hrs.. so that cuts 3.5 hrs of even the nonstops right there.

I found an itinerary that's just 30 miles over the requirement.. but it has 44:10 just in flying time (not counting connections).
So without the Concorde I doubt it's possible.

Is there any interest if this record is broken?

I have worked on this record attempt for some time now and got a route and time in place, however I have looked at talked to carriers about this but there does not seem to be any interest in this record. Whether it is because they want to be green or something not sure. I thought if I could get to the point of this then it would be okay but no one is interested. What are your views?

I did this last month - not for a record, though...

PHX-PHL-LHR-SIN-BNE-SYD-LAX-PHX - all *alliance

The lay over in LHR was about 12 hours(there is an earlier SQ flight-mine left at 10:05pm).

The lay over in SIN was about 2 hours w/ change from SQ A380 to SQ A330

Virgin Blue goes about every hour from BNE-SYD.

UA leaves SYD about 3:25pm each day and arrives at LAX at 9:52am (same day).

Flights to PHX are every hour, so it's a matter of how to get through Immigration and customs and then hop on either UA (same terminal) or US across from UA.

If you're trying for a record, you have to fly East especially during the winter to take advantage of the tailwinds.

I was looking at it but not sure what purpose it would serve as no one in the industry seems to go for it for what ever reason.
