FF Miles

I know this has been discussed thousands of times, but I spent ten minutes searching, and can't find the answer.

My airline some years back got rid of Frequent Flier Miles and replaced it with a complex formula that essentially awards you for dollars spent rather than miles flown. This of course, instantly snuffed out one of the most valuable services this forum provided--identifying cheap "mileage runs."

Do any American airlines still reward points for miles flown?

Members of AA's AAdvantage program earn AAdvantage miles based on distance flown on partner airlines -- other than JetBlue. But it's not necessarily a 1:1 earnings situation. You'll earn a percentage of the flown mileage, depending on the fare basis, whether you're flying in a premium cabin, and whether you have elite status in AAdvantage. That percentage might be more or less than 100%, based upon those factors.

Flights on AA and JetBlue will earn miles based on base fare and a multiplier depending on your elite status, if any.

Alaska Air still provides award miles based on distance flown, more or less.

Delta and United do exactly the same thing for partner flying. I've earned 40K+ miles Delta Skymiles on Virgin Atlantic trips which would have only earned 9 to 10K miles if flown on DL based on the fare prices I paid. Unpublished fares (such as fares that are part of certain vacation packages) also still earn based on mileage flown.

Many of us still fly mileage runs primarily to earn points towards status, rather than primarily for redeemable miles. My Virgin Atlantic trips were primarily mileage runs to help me earn Diamond Status on Delta (and not primarily about the redeemable miles). My trips cost $1100 - $1200 and wouldn't have really been worth it for just the redeemable miles alone.

Thank you! I don't really care about redeemable miles. You can fly halfway around the world for $400. I just want status. I want to fly Business Class or First Class. I want to be an Aristocrat again!

I flew Spirit Airlines once for $29 RT from BOS-MIA and still suffer from PTSD.

Cool, but I don't often fly to Alaska!

(I hear great things about Alaska Airlines)

AS is based in Washington State, not Alaska.

From BOS, AS offers nonstop service to SEA, PDX, SFO, LAX, and SAN. ;)

Hmm....thankx! I haven't flown for two years, and need to get my sea legs.

To clarify, if you are talking about elite qualifying miles rather than redeemable miles, only Delta and Alaska still use miles flown rather than money spent for their own metal. For partner flights, I think they all use a formula based on the fare class and mileage flown.
