These destinations are 1-2-1 configuration, the risk you get bad seat is small. Or you can always book AA metal where the selection is free.

SFO, SJC, IAD, and JFK are all marginally above €1,000. Possibly they'd drop below using an OTA, but I definitely would not be using one of those for these.
I tracked the prices in a table for all US/Canada destinations from Heathrow (well, I think I managed to get them all) here. It's based on July and August since that's the earliest I think I'll book right now!

It is normal for BA yes, free for Silver or above, otherwise free at 24 hours before. Route using the 787-10 or A350 and there's no risk of a ropey seat
