Now they are refusing to rebook to different destinations again.
So I guess my best bet will be to rebook CAN to some time next year? May?

I definitely want to fly, so changing dates/flights has my preference. Just don't know when.

I have to rebook my flight today, departure would have been tomorrow. Guess I’ll just go with CAN in May...

Try to find a date when the CAN route is not flying, but HKG. And tell them you need to fly only on that day.

last time I called them when they told me they could not change routes, they insisted that I could only change to dates when CAN operates, so Apr 2021 onwards, which is quite inconsiderate. Of course YMMV

Speaking with a different agent this time, they offered rebookings to HKG through November 2020. But they also said that if HKG isn't open by then, the only option would be a refund, not another rebooking - though I guess the rules could change by then.
Anyway, I still have two other bookings (CAN and HKG, both in October), so I just moved this CAN booking to May 2021. Unfortunately they opened up I inventory for my rebooking (both ways) - the cheapest fare bucket available was actually D.

I'm pretty sure EC261 kicks in when HKG is not open by then.

yes so that would oblige AY to re-route or refund based on what you want if flights get cancelled. you should be able to rebook for later dates.

If your flight is still running but you choose not to travel or don't meet the entry requirements for HK then there is no recourse under EC261 and you are reliant on whatever AY's covid flexibility rules are.
