of course no matter what you do, the fare rules when booking applies.
Yes I already found out about that, so it's not 'that' bad
Anyway, i'm wondering what will happen when I can't get a visa for China even though I have no intention to visit China..

I hope restrictions on transiting via PVG will be lifted by then..

I will not bet on it opening for tourism before vaccine is widespread. China is getting increasingly isolationist and I strongly feel like the virus situation is a great excuse to further isolate.
You can always change your dates with no questions asked. You can also change to HKG I believe.

But a day change will mostly trigger a fare difference? as the "original" I fare is now somehow remapped to R fare?

If there is no I selling class available on the flight you choose to change to, then yes you do pay any fare difference. So choose carefully.

BS, you don’t pay a fare difference. At least not for invol changes.

I assumed the question was about voluntary changes. Also if the flights are running but you can't travel that would be a voluntary change.

Voluntary changes are allowed by AY under their current guidelines, but fare differences are payable if same selling class isn't available.

https://www.finnair.com/en/flight-in...1-july-onwards

CHANGES TO BOOKINGS FOR FLIGHTS TO BE OPERATED AFTER 1 JULY
  • If we haven’t cancelled your flight but you wish to cancel your reservation, the refund will be according to the ticket rule.
  • For bookings made latest on 31 August 2020, you can change your travel dates through Manage booking or our customer service without a change fee and travel within your ticket validity, if
    • You made your booking via Finnair channels.
    • You have a Finnair operated and marketed flight.
    • There are available seats on your chosen new flight. It is good to know that if there is no availability in your original fare class for your new flight, you need to pay the fare difference between your original and new flight tickets.
    • You make the change 7 days before the departure of your original flight. You need to select new dates for your travel when making the change. If you change your travel dates closer to your flight, the change conditions follow your original ticket rules.
  • Did you change your travel dates already once and would like to change them again? You can do it through Manage booking and travel within your ticket validity when the above-listed requirements are fulfilled. If you were unable to make the change online, please contact our customer service.
You are right to say if your flight is cancelled then you can change your travel dates until 31 May 2021, and there would be no change fees or fare difference. Same selling class is not required, and as long as there are seats on your chosen new flight in the same cabin class that would be sufficient.

Yes but is it invol? When I booked the original fare (to CAN) I had no intention to go to CAN, I just wanted to transit via CAN; but there was no COVID back then either... But now, there is no 144 TWOV and 'normal' visa's are really hard to get (and they are not cheap).

I shouldn't need a visa anyway for transit if I stay airside...

yes it is a voluntary change if the flights are not cancelled but you can’t or won’t travel. There is no provision for a refund under EC261 just because you can no longer meet entry requirements of the booking destination. this is the gap that should be filled by your travel insurance policy.

I don’t know the current state of TWOV in China or whether you can just stay airside, clearly a lot of things have been restricted in the last few months.

Negative, the original ticket was BLQ-HKG-BLQ in MAY, got canceled in APR, and changed into MXP-HKG-MXP which suppose to travel in OCT where all flights still show operate.

perhaps got luck or simply agent just ignore my travel date or something but got rebooked with a new ticket in 5 mins but ticket NVB/NVB is showing weird dates

You've got the wrong end of the stick. Booked in D class does not mean a "D class" flexibility, never has done.

Flexibility is decided by the conditions attached to the fare. The booking code letter only determines availability. They are often correlated, but need not be.

I have a feeling you are very lucky haha, anyway just opened another chat on the AY website.

Asked what would happen if I can't transit via PVG, rep said that if I couldn't travel due to travel restrictions I should contact them within 14 days of departure (who would have thought) and that they can change the flight or give a refund.
