Ive tried chat about 5 times and called once, all don't allow me to change STR CAN to STR HKG in Sep / Oct.
The long connection times are not idea.
I'm wondering if I do change the dates, and it becomes R class, can I change the dates again for free when AY increases more flights towards the end of th year?

No, that's not how this works. Either keep trying with different agents or explain that the long connection times don't work for you and that you would prefer to fly from some other German airport.

DP: All of my May flights got canceled. I called AY Chinese hotline and the agent quickly rebooked on FCO-HEL-HKG-HEL-FCO in July/August with no additional charges, despite originally booked with eDreams(no customer service at all btw, horrible). The new booking class for inbound is R, which is AY's new business booking class starting from April, although it still shows Economy on my booking page and other partners' FFP websites.
She initially refused to change the departure to other European countries though, meaning I have to re-apply for the annoying Schengen visa to fly.

Changed from STR-CAN to TXL-HKG a few hours ago through chat. It took 2 agents last night with no luck but can change STR to TXL. Today after 4 different agents one just asked I can change from any Germany to China or Hong Kong. All until 30 November 2020. My experience - be nice and try after 6pm UK time. Somehow it makes difference. 😉

The hardest thing about those flights to CAN is that they only fly to CAN a couple of times a week, and they don't allow any segments on other carriers like CA and CX..

When is the latest you can decide on whether to change / refund if they've already cancelled your flights? Does it have to be before the original travel date?

You should do it before the original departure date, according to the lawyer I spoke to.
It’s not like you get a “fly for free, whenever” ticket which you can redeem at two days’ notice next year.

If you booked via expedia you should call soon to have it changed, my booking just got cancelled by Expedia and they are not refunding, the email says they will issue me a travel voucher from the airline... will try to chat with Finnair to settle this now
