I assume it will be possible to just postpone again and again until the restrictions are lifted.

It would be nice if we could just refund now, as it’s looking impossible to put solid plans in place.

I appreciate that from the airlines point of view this is a non-refundable ticket and this is not their fault. They obviously want to get paid, like any of us would.

But, these are surely extraordinary circumstances. Even if schedules are due to resume at the start of April as it stands, who is to say things don’t worsen in mainland China in the coming days, or that border countries like Vietnam don’t develop confirmed outbreaks.

I appreciate there is a human cost to all of this for those people suffering. It’s awful. But, at the same time, this policy of allowing cancellations only up to the end of March must surely be updated SOON.

I tried to look last last night to see if the Finnish foreign office have guidelines to Finnish travellers for affected countries. Couldn’t find anything, but maybe I was looking in the wrong places.

I would have thought if the Finnish, or the German government had issued advisories against travel, then someone like Expedia should be able to cancel the ticket?

I’m on an STR-HEL-CAN routing.

Are you now taking the silly debate from the German forum to FlyerTalk?
Your flight is in May. Just take a chill pill.

Agreed. Make sure you've got decent travel insurance, then sit back and watch the hotel prices for your visit tumble.

He’s complained elsewhere that he doesn’t want to pay for a visa now that he might not be able to use. For his 550€ business class ticket. He would prefer a full refund 3 months out, which he wants the EU to guarantee.

I'm taking the wait and see approach myself while monitoring for waivers and/or lower hotel prices.

Exactly. I rebooked my first flight the day before departure, from February to late April.
My next flight is in two weeks and I’m going to decide spontaneously if I feel like traveling or if I’ll rebook that flight as well.
I’m assuming they will extend the waivers soon.

I imagine that will be the case. At this point, I'll take a cancellation waiver if both AY and AA (my positioning flight to Rome) are offering one. My original plan was to head to TPE to stay with the in-laws, but that's not possible at the moment with the measures applied to someone coming from HKG, even as a transit passenger. With minimal options to get stateside for the week in between flights, it might be better to cancel than to be stranded somewhere if things don't improve.

There are still a ton of other good travel options within Asia - flight prices are good, and hotel prices are bloody amazing. HKG still has flights going out, so have a think about places like Bali, Myanmar, Vietnam, etc., which don't currently have quarantine laws in effect. The travel industry as a whole is hurting bad over this virus, and as a group of people who buy these tickets for the fun/love of traveling, I feel like we should still try and travel if its safe to do so.

Unfortunately they don't work with my schedule. I was going to have some meetings in Taiwan as a nested itinerary, but that's not possible now.

I'm hoping for a waiver or things to clear up/restrictions dropped in the next two months.

Wow! A super special deal price which fit with your work schedule - and here I thought all these silly deal fare runners were just flying for the sake of flying and earning miles!

Not sure if that was a sarcastic response... If so, was going for the miles as well.

I'll wait it out and probably will still fly even if waivers aren't in place.

Sorry if it came off sarcastic! I just end up booking these stupid flights on a whim, and then by the time I factor in positioning, hotels, etc, etc, it becomes quite the adventure and usually a milk run. I couldn't imagine a stroke of luck where a fare like this pops up and I could actually use it for a reason outside of mileage running!

That's usually the case for me where it's only for the miles. Mrs. Majuki even calls them "stupid trips".

It worked out that the flights were compatible with dates for meetings in Taiwan, so I thought it would work out well with the fare when I booked it.

I have 2 months before I need to make a call about whether or not to do the trip.

i see AY now has a waiver for travel to Milan between 26 Feb - 4 Mar, so they clearly are monitoring the situation...
