I was always told to avoid vietjet like the plague, seems there are options to da nang with jetstar pacific (I like regular jetstar but can’t comment on the Vietnam operation really), KA (could be exxy), HK express, or air Macau if you fancied doing something unusual

Thanks for that. I was leaning towards Jetstar however I am intrigued why do you mention Air Macau being "unusual" ? ? ? I like the unusual....

Vietjet is fine. It is just another low cost carrier. If you have low expectations then Vietjet can be a bargain on the HKG - Vietnam routes. I have flown them before with zero issues

The original idea was to then fly to Phuket for about 8 nights and I made some great reservations with Marriott thinking it might be easy to connect with Cathay and upgrade with Avios, boy was I wrong. The connecting flights are crazy money so I then started having a look around and say that Danang, Hoi An: Vietnam was suggested as a direct flight from HK for a beach get away. Again this will be a low cost carrier flight and I have made some reservations there for a nice hotel but wondered if the group had any ideas? We are going to do three nights in HK on either the arrival or return journey so were pretty flexible but April seems to be slammed an we get in April 9th and fly back to Helsinki on April 21st.

Many thanks also for the tip to a previous post on the Hilton Helsinki for an overnight as on the way back that helps quite a bit.

Happy flying everyone...

Stephen
April is slammed because of Easter... there are a lot of people, and moreover families with children taking advantage of school holidays, travelling in that period

From Hong Kong, I would suggest
1. Fly to Penang with MH; while sea and beaches aren't exceptional, it's a really good place for sightseen and pool time, with great & cheap food all around.
2. Fly to Singapore, stay there a couple of days and then take the ferry to Bintan for some less expensive relax
3. Check the prices to Bali from Taipei, CX and MH have usually very nice fares from there.

I've been to Da Nang, Hoi An, Hue, very nice places! I have however no suggestion regarding the airline because when we went there I was able to find some flights with KA using avios...

As I am one of the first to go, hope that gives some people a bit of a relief: 22 hrs to go until take off. Online check in worked for c-class row 1 STR-HEL

Good luck!! 🤗

side note... does anybody have suggestions on reasonably priced destinations from Guangzhou please?!

I’m TWOV and was thinking SE Asia Vietnam/Cambodia/Laos/Malaysia... but even something like a sub-2hour flight from CAN to Hanoi seems to come in at almost Ł200 in economy for the timings I would need?! And I’d need to pay ŁŁ to select seats in economy :-/

Looks like a better option may be flying J on Korean Air to Seoul... seeing as it’ll be about 3.5 hour flight time and a lie-flat on A330 for only twice the price... (was going to be going there anyway later in the summer as a side trip from Tokyo!)

Thanks for all the suggestions. I am actually looking now at the Natra Bintan instead of the Vietnam thank to you. I will see how the flights work out. The only thing is its lots more travel and thats the time we are supposed to be taking it easy. I will see how it goes but wow Bintan looks awesome and now on my list thanks to you.

Just keep in mind that Bintan, being so close to Singapore, has higher prices than the rest of Indonesia (but still cheaper than Singapore!).

Longhaul HEL-CAN after 27 h layover now also successfully checked in online. Only challenge was the mandatory Visa details - „TWOV“ as Visa number went through.

Now ready for departure in STR in 2 1/2 h.

HKexpress do frequent sales where the return is free when you book the outbound - keep an eye on their site, or sign up to their mailing list.

Made it to C-Class on flight AY0097 HEL-CAN - no issues at all.

if you do not have a visa - keep your printed onward flight details ready and make up your mind which visa you want to use (24/72/144). This was checked/asked twice.
