I guess since most of the times OTA's and airlines will allow you to cancel for free within 24 hours of the booking it does make sense..

I ended up booking for feb/march. Gonna use it to get to Indonesia. I couldn't force AS on the outbound leg, but did on the return. JL operated AA coded on the outbound and JL operated JL coded on the return - P and E respectively. I noticed the direct on SQ was pricing out around $1000, which is also not a bad deal. That's a little too long for one segment for me and with my repositioning flights, etc it really doesn't gain me much usable time. I ended up booking and cancelling three diferent routings/dates of this before I settled on my dates. BOOK FIRST ask questions/permission ;-) later!

Possibly using the 24-hour free change or cancellation (or hold) for tickets sold in the US?

That was a great deal, booked for November. AA-CX outbound JAL-AS return. Should help me get to AS 75K again and push my wife over the top to AS Gold. The RDM earning alone is pretty incredible around 42K AS RDM as a 75K if my math is right.

As others have noted, you get a 24-hour free cancel, and since this was available on AA you could have done a hold as well. Of course in this situation most people probably didn't pick AA, unless they had SWU to use. The JL rules had a fairly low change fee and even allowed refund in case of illness/injury, which is rare. Usually its refund on death only, as was the case for the AA fare.

Act as if the deal will be pulled at any moment, no matter what the fare rules say about availability. Airlines can pull fares at anytime, or zero out fare buckets even faster than filing a new fare.

My usual philosophy is book (or put on hold for AA) something if I'm interested, then try to get something better or more of them. After I'm happy I figure out if I want it and how to make it work. Then I tell my wife.

I'm just curious how you guys find some of these. I spent most my free time on ITA Matrix trying to discover fares to other places. Right now I'm looking at Maldives. Any tips appreciated.

I have the general theory but am not quite grasping 1) how you know where to look in the first place and 2) how you take a flight and add the extra segments. Is it just based on knowledge of different hub/spoke combos?

I posted this fare, so I'll tell you how I found it.

I have been specifically looking for ways to top off my EQM for Alaska to get to MVP Gold 75k because I'm pretty close as a result of other paid travel this year and would love to get the bonus 50,000 RDM when I hit that milestone. If I can earn a pile of miles on the way, that'd be great, too. I generally look at PE or J fares because I'm not interested in much else.

I'm in Las Vegas so I generally enter LAS, LAX, SFO, SEA, SJC as my origin into Google Flights and a variety of Asian destinations in the destination field. I think for this one I was looking at TYO, HKG, SIN, PEK, and PVG. I then changed the airlines dropdown to filter flights to Alaska partners only. After that, I just played around with dates in the next few months and looked at the Google Flights price chart. I saw this interesting price and then checked it out on ITA Matrix and saw what I could build based on my knowledge of where AS and AA fly, where JL flies, and what dates would be best for me.

I took screenshots and posted then booked (although I probably should have reversed that order).
