Mind sharing how you're able to do that? I'm not very familiar with AZ (or their site). Where is the option to select seats?

As noted in post #5, this probably was a mapping issue. ITA showed XLX6S4ES as the fare code but somehow this basic economy (X) fare was mapped to business (E). The text of the fare rules reflected the basic economy restrictions.

After your last "very impressive" FCO-LAX flight on the 777-200 you wanted some more? I hope that "selected seats" doesn't mean you are bringing Mrs. 777 along

Great found but I avoid it because if Alitalia...its exactly 2 years ago since the FCO-(HANOI IN MY CASE)-DUS debacle 😆

LOL. No way I would let her fly AZ. I'd be paying for that for years. But as a cheap mileage run for FB status, you bet.
I just need to remember to bring my own IFE since AZ IFE is near the worst in the world.

Pull up your reservation on the Alitalia website and click the green "CUSTOMIZE YOUR TRAVEL" button.

Once you have the res pulled up, need to click the "Customize Your Travel" button. This interaction seems well, very much on par with everything else AZ does!

in for 1 MAD-JFK as compensation for my bleeding heart after missing the CX deal. Hope it sticks. Still traumatized by the FLR-DUS deal.

I bought mine directly on AZ website and it had the correct "business" ticket rules posted ( $ 400 refund, 2 x 32 kg....) so not always an mapping issue. Was able to select seats immediately after purchase, in business. BE on my flight dates are actually higher then what i have paid!

I'd seen this, and then thought the below was what I should select to choose seats, but ...

... all I get when I do is the following:

"Sorry, it was not possible to proceed with your request, we apologize for the inconvenience; if you want, please contatct us for further information"

Thankfully all seats show as J, and I've been able to go to Delta to select my Delta One seats JFK-LAX; trying to work out how to get my AF PNR, if anyone has any tips (as neither DL or AZ PNRs seem to work).

Thanks for all of the help!

Where would you suggest to credit this? I don't have flying blue status and any pointers would be helpful. EY seems to award 41K miles but taxes are a real pain with EY redemptions.

I'd personally favor Delta or AF - have not looked at actual earning on either though. Can supplement with Amex or Chase this way. I guess EY is the same but I don't love their chart and fees, as you say.

Edit: just noticed you're UK based, so apologies by comments were best suited for US based flyers.

And just in case it needs to be said: anywhere EXCEPT AZ!
