For New Zealand from 1 October 2019, if you are from a visa waiver country you must request an NZeTA before you travel.
NZ transit does/may require a NZeTA. But check yourself.

While you had a good experience with the bus, I had a miserable one. I tried to use the bus last year and showed up around 7:50pm. The website states the bus runs until 8:30. I waited and waited, and couldn't find anyone to ask about the bus. Around 8:15, I asked an American gate agent, and she said the bus stops at 8pm. I explained I had been there since 7:50, and she said the last pick-up is before 8pm, but she didn't know when. So, my guess is you need to be there to pick up the last bus by 7:30pm.

Simply for habits that require to go landside in Chicago.

Data point:

Pulled the plug a week or so ago, and got a refund minus $250/ticket (booked via Expedia, and will contact Air NZ to see if it’s possible to have that final $250/ticket refunded). No questions or issues at all.

I’m booked on NZ27 ORD-AKL on 6/7 and returning on NZ26 AKL-ORD on 6/21 (booked via orbitz) Today I noticed that I can no longer choose seats via the ANZ app because it says these flights are not operated by Air NZ. However, the website still says its being operated by ANZ. I’m still able to choose my seats to and from Sydney. I didn’t get any notification of aircraft change. Has anyone noticed anything similar and would I be able to change routing to via Lax or Sfo to avoid any plane “downgrade”? Thanks in advance!

I noticed that this happened on my flights where J was full. I just looked at expertflyer on 6/7 and it looks like NZ27 seat map is all occupied with the 2 blocked seats on the left side.

On my flights ORD-AKL-SYD, the AKL-SYD flight (103 on 787) never allowed me to choose seats and my SO and I sat 2 seats apart. The ORD-AKL seat map was available to me until about a few days before the flight when it looked like the cabin filled up.

Downgrades are always possible, but I wouldn't see this as a sign of one.

I have also noted that the 7/5 operation of NZ ORD-AKL has gone to no longer offering Seat Select or showing the map. That flight was down to 4 J seats just before the map disappeared, so my thought is they move to assignment by ANZ once they get low enough on seats. I still see my seat numbers the same as before.

Edit: One seat freed up, so now 5 J seats are available and Seat Select is back. Thus, I feel strong in my hypothesis that at <=4 J seats, Seat Select goes away.

When do the blocked seats open up? During online check-in or at the airport or gate?

Quick update now that I'm back. The agents in Sydney were not able to interline my checked bag all the way. Only to Chicago, even though, the separate flight was on United. So that just added a bit more hassle once I landed in LAX and rechecked them at T7.
Found the service to be outstanding on my return flights. The bed is really comfortable. I ended up sleeping a good 10 hours from ORD-AKL and about 7 from AKL-LAX. The service does take a bit longer than on other airlines I'd say. Maybe that's because of the long flight and they try to drag it out?

I was happy with the seats I had, so I didn't even think to look.

I've noticed myself making the following points over and over again to friends and family since I got back so I want to call them out on this thread. I've seem them mentioned in other threads (Australia smart gates, AKL transit, etc.)

The transit and customs/immigration on this trip blew me away with it's simplicity and quickness.

Upon arrival ORD-AKL and SYD-AKL we walked down the long sterile area hallway lined with glass partitions from the intl gates. At the end of the hallway the pax entering NZ went left and we went right, then around an immediate corner and the transit security check was right there. Granted, we were in business, but there was less than 10 pax in the area the entire time, both times. I'm not sure I actually stopped moving either time. Once you collect your baggage from the Xray belt, you are spit into the airside great hall near the shops and at the base of the stairs/escalators back to the gates. I was worried about a 50 min connection when 30 mins would have been fine.

Arriving in SYD, assuming you have a e-passport from the US (or a bunch of other countries) you can use any of the kiosks before customs. If there are people at the first bank, keep walking. I think I counted 3 or 4 banks along the walk before the gates. You get a card after you go through the screens (very similar to global entry experience but you get something more like a metro card as opposed to a receipt) which goes into the smart gate, which does facial recognition, I assume and that's it... you are in the country at baggage.

As someone who has had pre-check and GE for 10-ish years and done a moderate amount of international travel (primarily to Europe and South America) the whole process still impressed me. And that's after I read just about every thread out there ahead of our trip and most of this info is already in those threads.

Agreed! The e-passport kiosks entering/departing Australia are wonderful. So efficient! We were impressed.

*Sitting in the AKL lounge now. Looking forward to the bed! Not my favorite seat, but an excellent bed once it’s made up.

I've completed my two trips that I booked for myself. One to Melbourne and the second one to Brisbane with a 3 day stopover in AKL. I had never flown Air NZ and was very impressed with the service and found the bed to be very comfortable (the seat alone not so much). On both of my returns from Australia through AKL to ORD I wanted to have my bags interlined to a separate itinerary from ORD to YYZ on United. In both cases they were unable to do it.

All I can do is cancel the ticket (for a refund) OR pay the fare difference -- which clearly can't be done on these fares. Alas, I believe I will NOT be going to Sydney after all. Sooooooo disappointed. There's literally another 20 min before I have to either cancel or I'll get no showed. So, I'm going to have to pull the trigger on cancellation soon.....
Sam_AE, my condolence as a fellow TK member.

This is the reason I never self connect the same day to a more expensive, infrequent, long haul flight that's the main part of the trip after I dodged the bullet with a near miss connecting TK's YUL from YQG by mad-dashing all the way to YYZ (YQG-YYZ flights were all cancelled) and barely made it to TK's flight in 2017. Especially during the winter, nowadays even springs and summers you aren't immune to major delays and disruptions (I was recently stuck in STL with WN due to thunderstorms for 6 hours).

Earlier this year I made to LAX 2 nights (yes, 2 nights) prior to HX's LAX-PVG deal and it was a right call as the next night the Midwest was hit with major snow storms and I would've missed the flight. Returning to US, I had same stressful experience (although I barely made it to PVG with a few hours left to sleep), my flight from LHW to PVG (the day prior) was delayed the whole day due to fog at URC (incoming aircraft), I proactively went to the ticket counter and asked for alternative flight. In the end flight from URC left by the end of the day but it was entirely possible that I would've been stuck at LHW and lost the returning portion of ticket.

From those harrowing experiences, here are my steps to minimize (even to eliminate) missing the main flights:

1. Try to arrive at the connecting airport at least the night before (returning trip you can tolerate more risk since the short hops are cheaper and more frequent).
2. Avoid flying to the gateway airports if possible, use trains, buses, or even driving to the airport. For me this is how I do it from DTW area to YYZ, ORD, and sometimes as far as YUL. Air travels seem to be increasingly unreliable these days and can be interrupted too easily.
3. Check the incoming flight of your self connecting (re-position) flight, beware of those coming from frequently delayed airports like LGA and ORD.
4. Observe weather between the 2 cities (in this case your home and ORD) 3-7 days in advance, if there's weather advisory proactively look for contingency and alternatives.
5. Look for Plans B, C, D, etc. even if there's no weather advisory.

All of my upcoming trips to other continents involve either driving, taking the train, or flying to gateway airports at least 24 hours prior to the trips.

Finally have some time to type up my trip report from April.
Flew AZ metal the whole way from Chicago (home base), we went to the polaris lounge to check it out as we are One World flyers and probably won't be back there for some time. It was a super nice lounge, we took the airside bus in T3 which was SO convenient and easy. they gave us a plastic card to hold on to so that we could show we were on the next bus.
Flew into Auckland - Had weather issues so flight took 17.5 hours instead of 16.5 thank goodness we were in biz! Not a fan of the seats, but when they are made into a bed, we had the best sleep of any on an airplane. They are so comfortable! The hassle was that we couldn't do it ourselves, but had to wait for a FA to make the bed down and then back up again. in the seating position they were meh, since they don't recline a lot.
FA's were SO nice, they found out I was vegetarian and modified every meal for me without me asking. Meal service took a long time, but it's ok because it was a long flight.
Stayed in New Zealand for the majority of the time then flew to SYD.
Flight to SYD was uneventful, but fine. Stayed there for three days and flew home to Chicago (with a stop in Auckland).

Flight home was fine as well, FA's again were very nice, although not as sweet and amazing as the first ones. AZ lounge in Auckland was horrible, jam packed with bad food. I felt like I was in a food court.

All in all, this was a great flight at an amazing deal!
