For New Zealand from 1 October 2019, if you are from a visa waiver country you must request an NZeTA before you travel.
NZ transit does/may require a NZeTA. But check yourself.

It seems to be closing at 7 pm. For those with Priority Pass, there is also the Air France-KLM lounge and the Swissport lounge.

Yes. I initially got an error when using Orbitz, so I tried Chase. Not sure why plain ol' Expedia didn't cross my mind.

So, you'd earn the PQMs and bonus RDMs, but drop back down to general member after the 90-day period without other qualifying UA activity. Moreover, only 016- tickets earn bonus RDMs on NZ flight numbers anyway. Everyone earns the same 125% on Z fares on an NZ-issued ticket, no advantage to Premiers.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong on any of this. I initially got excited about the implications of a UA status match, but there don't actually seem to be many in this case.
Well shoot, no good option yet for me. My UA metal is IAH>ORD so if I went with VS for earnings I'd lose that. If I stick with my UA Silver Premier, I only get 125%, no bonus. People are telling me to use Asiana or ANA as they have good award charts and availability. Time to run a spreadsheet!

Stopover in AKL was permitted in the original fare rules. I managed to get this booked (expedia) shortly before the deal died and have ORD->AKL, 8 days stopover, AKL->SYD, 3 days, SYD->AKL->ORD and it priced out at ~$1,500 each (two persons) all on NZ metal. If you did not book/ticket with the stopover in the first place there is nothing you can do about it now.
Now I have to figure out how best to get from NYC to/from ORD, but I am way out in October so plenty of time to figure that out.

Positioning flights

I am sure many of us now need to figure out how to get to/from ORD. In my case from NYC... preferably LGA or HPN. As I look into this there are a few things folks need to be aware of. First, if you are on NZ metal from ORD you are going to depart from T5 which means that you need to factor in enough time to transfer from the domestic arrival terminals over to T5.

Second, don't assume you can stay airside... you may have to collect your checked bags in ORD and take them over to T5 yourself. Be sure to check the interline agreements to see if you can check bags from your originating airport. E.g. AA explicitly will not interline and through check your bags onto NZ. UA might as it seams they will for *A even if separate tickets/PNRs. So be sure to allow lots of time in ORD on the outbound (I am going to plan around 3 hours minimum but 4 might be a safer buffer... depends on time of year too in case of weather, I am October so should be okay on that front).

On the return journey interline is less of a problem as we have to collect our bags to clear customs anyway. I assume that the major airlines (UA/AA/DL/etc) have baggage check-in at ORD T5 for arriving passengers... and can print baggage tags, not just accept bags that are already tagged to final destination.

Finally... there is always a risk with not checking bags to final destination. If for some reason you bags do not make it to ORD on your positioning flight then you have a huge problem. I assume there is no obligation on part of the originating airline to get the bags to you in Aus/NZ. In other words, having typed all this, I feel like carry-on is by far the best option just to be safe.

Cheapest or most comfortable + reasonably priced? If the latter I recommend Amtrak, although the quality of catering has slipped in the last few years, the sleeper has showers and meals.

4 hours is still not a safe buffer, I'd put 6 hours. Ideally I would recommend staying overnight, hotels are reasonably priced near ORD, if you can work remotely you won't lose a work day. I used to connect at BOS/JFK frequently and nearly missed 1 trip due to delays (more than weather).

Returning to ORD my risk tolerance is higher as I have more re-booking and connecting options.

on further research from my earlier post and touching on the interline agreements think positioning from MSP via UA will be the move. shouldn't have to recheck bags so can kill time at Polaris Lounge before heading to T5. only downside is for me I have 3.5hr buffer or 8hr buffer options, the 6hr buffer I'd prefer is much higher priced. will probably be very conservative and do the 8hr buffer. I'm late September so weather shouldn't be a problem, but i'm in a "rather sit in airport for 4 extra hours than risk losing an entire vacation"

would be great if we could get bags clear customs and recheck in T5 without having to carry bags over to domestic terminals to fly final leg. tend to schedule this one much tigher buffer.

Amtrak from NYC to Chicago? 20 hour adventure vs. 2 hours by air.

LGA to/from ORD is a very competitive route - namely between AA and UA -> very competitive and reasonable ticket prices.

My first choice right now would be AA from LGA to ORD as they have first class for $429 round trip on my days of travel. And way more flights than anyone else. But I cannot through check bags if I do that. UA wants over $800 for F and $455 for economy, but looks like they will through check bags. I need to think about this a bit.

What dates? I travel between LGA and ORD quite a bit, and have never paid more than $300, even during peak travel seasons.

Why worry and book now? Set up a flight alert on Google for your preferred flights and be patient. Especially when your flight isn't until Q3.
Also united feeder gets you right to the Polaris lounge. Even AA you can do a sterile transfer over to PL... Just pick your bags up later.

Beware of some construction happening on the inter terminal rail. Which will be down periodically. Make sure to account appropriate time.

I just disembarked from the Lake Shore Limited in CHI today and can attest to all of the above. ^ But to be extra safe, I'd only ever entertain a same-day plane-train connection, not vice versa, where overnight trains are concerned.

If our bookings survive the next week or so, whoever might be willing to run the analysis would be doing a huge service to the community. WhereToCredit makes AV and LH seem tempting (along with VS and some of the more obscure programs) at 200% earn. But it's all relative if the award chart for one's desired redemption is crummy. Also some programs only allow r/t redemptions, no o/w unless you throw away the return segment (OZ and NH both appear to have that restriction). Some also have no transfer partners in case you need to top off.

Separate but related, there are some clear cases where one of these fares would earn *S status, but it's unclear which program gets you the closest to *G.

I suspect it is way too early for me to be booking the LGA/ORD segments. Flights are likely to get cheeper at around 3 months before travel time.
