For New Zealand from 1 October 2019, if you are from a visa waiver country you must request an NZeTA before you travel.
NZ transit does/may require a NZeTA. But check yourself.

Does anyone have any experience with extending the trip ?

my fiancée only had a certain amount of PTO left at that point due to a family trip she’s taking.

I would love to stay longer if it wouldn’t cause a huge reprice. I’d be willing to pay up to $1000 more if it meant I could stay an extra week.

Would taking a gamble once travel commenced and then trying to extend just my return work ?

better to inquire before travel started ?

Refer to post 610 above
On mistake fares expect full repricing at current rates. They will not go out of their way to do you a favour.

It looks like a few people have started their trips, esp. on ANZ metal. I wouldn't mind seeing a few trip reports and/or seat recommendations!

Without going too much OT but highly related to this, anyone looking at minimizing hotel stays in Sydney (which is at least 5 nights for most), the quickest and cheapest is signing up one of the Marriott Bonvoy credit cards with current sign-on bonus of 100K points.

I recommend this hotel, your sign-on bonus will cover 5 nights (4 nights + 1 free) at C4. Close to CBD

https://www.marriott.com/hotels/trav...-central-park/

Best part is you can book, lock those award rooms and have until 2 weeks before your stay to earn those points with their "Point Advance" policy.

This hotel is quite distant from the harbor and the CBD and not particularly convenient for first time visitors.

Agree, that does seem to be a bit away from the action. I'm staying at a different Marriott, the Sydney Harbor Circular Quay location on Pitt St.

Would also appreciate any feedback/confirmation on people's ability to check in online/mobile and get a BP. There is a thread in the Air NZ forum currently discussing mobile check-in issues with Australian visa.

Just got back today. Flew ORD-SFO-SYD on United. Went mostly ok. Issues on plane to SFO with tight connection but we made it.

Return to Chicago today was terrible. Original itinerary SYD-AKL-ORD. Got a notification as we arrived to Sydney that our flight was delayed 45 min, leaving a 30 min right connection. When we got into the Air NZ lounge, we asked the host to look into it. She made some calls and got back to us that there was no way we would make the connection and had been rebooked to Qantas Syd-sfo flight 4 hours later (Overbooked? I thought they gave up way too quick.) Qantas flight followed by UA SFO-ORD with 6 hour layover in SF that would cause me to miss a separate ticket UA flight in Chicago. The Qantas flight sucked. One of the bathrooms in Biz class was non-operational, IFE super buggy. Makes United J look good.

when we got to SF, we talked to United and got on the next flight to Chicago, but no first class seats available. Ended up sitting separately in middle seats. That’s fine, but WiFi and IFS also didn’t work for most of the flight.

Not even sure who to send the first complaint to here - Air NZ, Qantas, United? All are in the running.

Re: hotel in Sydney, we had great experiences with two stays at Marriott Pier One Sydney Harbour as Titanium members. Don’t see how the Marriott at Circular Quay could beat them.

Not sure what there is to complain about. Flight delays happen, and missing a flight on a separate ticket isn't their responsibility.

I got home a couple days ago and wanted to share some of my flight/travel experiences.

My outbound route was ORD-LAX-SYD on United. My inbound route was SYD-AKL-LAX on Air NZ and LAX-ORD on United. This was my ideal route as I am trying to get at least UA Gold status this year and the Z fare class netted 200% PQMs. In total, I received 33,728 PQMs and 13,762 award miles.

I also purposely built in 12+ hour layovers in LAX each way. My in-laws live close by and I appreciated the quick stop to their house which broke up the long journey a bit.

I was able to use the Polaris lounge in ORD. I had an early 8:10am flight and the lounge didnt open til 7am. I only had time to stop in to browse the areas and eat a quick breakfast. I appreciated the buffet offerings and hope to have another opportunity to spend more time in the lounge in the future.

After arriving in LAX we swung over to west hollywood for a nice brunch with friends. We then were able to spend some time with my in-laws and shower up. We decided to get back to LAX about 3 hours before the flight so we can take advantage of the LAX Polaris lounge which turned out to be one of the highlights of the trip. I thought the cocktail list was well put together. My wife enjoyed a couple of their signature cocktails and I had a few too many Nikka Coffey Japanese whiskeys. As we were sitting at the bar, a waitress was walking around with small appetizers which I appreciated. We then dined in the sit down portion of the restaurant. We sampled 4 dishes which we were all very good. I hadThe Prisoner Napa Valley Red which was delicious. We definitely over indulged and had a great time before boarding our LAX-SYD flight.

I was able to snag 6E/6F for the journey. I want to thank Flyertalk for suggesting these seats. The foot well was much bigger than the rest of the rows. Being 6'2" this was a huge help for sleeping. The crew was on the older side and fantastic. They provided great service throughout the whole flight. I liked the bedding supplied...2 blankets, 1 pillow, 1 gel pillow and also a mattress pad on request. They were out of pajamas but I received a $100 flight credit when I followed up with customer care.

I am glad we ate and drank so much in the PL. The food on the flight was borderline inedible. I went with the Thai Coconut Chicken and couldn't eat more than a couple bites. Also, after drinking $60+ bottles of wine and liquor, I decided to skip the on board offerings. I asked the FA if there were any hot bite snacks and she said she had grilled cheese/tomato soup and lobster mac n cheese. I slept for a solid 5 hours, ate some lobster Mac N cheese, slept for another 5 hours and was waken up for breakfast service which was as expected. All in all, I enjoyed the flight and the seat was more than adequate for a 15 hour flight.

For the return, we spent some time in both the SYD and AKL Air New Zealand lounges. Both were pleasant and had decent offerings and neither was overly crowded.

I knew what to expect with the seat arrangements, but was still shocked to see it in person. There is absolutely no privacy with this setup. It also makes traveling as a couple awkward. I didn't like the seat in the upright position and the seat controls are limited. The food was pretty meh. Nothing to get excited about.

The positives were the crew and comfort of the seat in lay flat mode. We had amazing service on both flights and the FAs seemed genuinely excited to serve us. It was a perfect mix of small talk and attentiveness to details. I also really enjoyed the wine offerings. When asked, the FA prepared our beds. The mixture of the padding and bedding made it the most comfortable airline seat I have ever been on. I am fortunate that I sleep on my side with my knees bent or else I could see the seat being a little too short for tall people, however I had no issues getting 9+ hours of sleep. The crew woke me up with about 2 hours and 15 minutes left on the flight, I wish they waited another 30 minutes.

Thanks again the FT community for bringing this amazing deal to my attention. I hope the rest of you enjoy your flights and safe travels.

Thanks for the report, my wife and I will make a similar trip in Aug, ORD-SFO-SYD. Couple of questions.

I was able to snag 6E/6F for the journey.

Was this the UA 787-9? We've picked the same seats, any issues with noise from the galley?

I knew what to expect with the seat arrangements, but was still shocked to see it in person.

What plane? The NZ 773? Did it seem to you that folks in the 2 middle seats can carry on a conversation? I've picked 2 window seats in adjacent rows, the map makes me think that'll be easier/better.

Thanks again.

Best seats for a couple in business premier (777-300)

I picked the same where possible, flying in a month

Yes it was the UA 787-9. We had no issues with galley noise or light. The bathroom is pretty far from these seats and so is the galley. Also, unlike row 1, they put mid flights snacks in the galley instead of the shelf on top of the seats.

For the NZ 777 flight, definitely take seats in adjacent rows. We choose seats in the smaller back cabin on the inside/middle of the plane...rows 10 and 11. Our thought process was A. We wanted to be in a smaller more private cabin (4 rows of seats compared to 7) and B. With the middle rows you are only facing 1 set of heads/faces instead of 3. Also, because of the seat positioning, you have to strain your neck to actually look out the window.

Appreciate this recommendation. I also found from research online that the footwell on the 6E/F seat is the widest possible. Makes a huge difference when trying to sleep if you're a side sleeper.
