My two $1502 charges posted from air new zealand but there are also two $139 mystery charges from United.

I guess my head has been in Vietnam deal- when/where did NZ state tickets would be good? Looked back on posts and missed it too. (post 333 Twitter was with NZ? Expedia?)- I am not usually this bad.

So, to answer my own question. Yes the fare basis is ZW0ZA9, I found that in my browser history for Jan 3rd when I was cross referencing my booking to what I could find on expertflyer. Both EF and ITA s/w are able to pull up the fare rules for this today. Looks like the ticketing window is Jan 3rd to Jan 10th. Today my flights price out at $7,500 a person, I got them at $1,500... so looks like NZ intended to launch a weekend special fare but got the price wrong when first published. In fact the fare I got exactly matches what they have on sale today as TW0ZA9 and that has the same sales restrictions (ticket by Jan 10th, etc.). So NZ launched a fare sale as intended but for the first few hours sold business class at the price intended for economy. We got a free upgrade !

Another thing that's strange... My return on UA is SYD-SFO-ORD. The transpac booked into Z, but SFO-ORD booked into Y. F definitely has space... So I'm not sure why I wasn't offered F. I believe folks who booked domestic legs on AS got F. So what happened with UA?

Also: If I fly into ORD on UA, can I be checked into my ORD-AKL flight at the outstation, or will I have to do so landside at ORD? It would be nice to go right to the Polaris Lounge rather than exit security to check in, then go back in. (I assume I can check into my NZ flight from Terminal 1...right?)

Cheapoair charges a $75 booking fee per ticket, if you booked on Cheapoair that might explain some of the fees. They also charged me a seat assignment fee but I managed to get that refunded as I assigned my own seats.

Maybe Z class wasn't available on your chosen flight? However when I booked through Expedia I was offered several itineraries that had my SYD-AKL segment in economy or premium economy, even though the connecting AKL-ORD was in business... for no apparent reason. So I had to be careful to select the one that had it in Business class. All the same flight and all the same price, very strange. If I had picked one of the economy/premium econ options I would be stuck with it. No recourse to change it. So you needed to be very careful at time of booking.

NZ departs from T5 at ORD. You will arrive into T1 (or 2) on UA. I do not think UA will be able to check you in for the NZ flight at your originating airport. Nor will they be able to do it at ORD. You will have to go to NZ in T5. But can you not do an online checkin with NZ before you depart? That will be the best option, then you don't need to stop at NZ check in counter. It does look like you can check your bags all the way through as my reading of UA's interline agreement and baggage through-check policy is that they will check your bags even though not on the same ticket or PNR. But you should check yourself. If you position to ORD on AA or DL you definitely cannot check bags through.

Anyone crediting to Virgin Atlantic? We are a family of 4 and seems like the best bang for our buck. This will credit there properly right? I don't know anything about rules. My next choice would be Etihad.

I noticed in the 3.5minutes I spent looking before I booked that if the connection exceeded a certain amount that the non-TPAC segment ended up in Y. I would have personally preferred a longer layover at AKL, but it would have made my MEL-AKL return segment price in Y. I also saw plenty of domestic UA segments in Y in my brief searching, but chose a ORD-LAX segment on UA in Z with a 2h40m layover at LAX instead.
