CAUTION - TURNAROUND
"One customer did have issues. Wang Guanran, who documents his travels on hktravelblog.com, had his plans to travel to New York on Wednesday cut short when he was prevented from flying by immigration officials in Vietnam... he was detained by Vietnamese immigration officials, who said it was illegal to return to his city of origin while in transit." - Source:SCMP, 2 January 2019

Visa Information: check out the Vietnam visa/VOA thread in the Asia forum. You can get either a visa on arrival where you get the stamp on arrival) or a "looseleaf" visa in advance from a VN Consulate in the US (which allows you to go straight to the immigration queue). There are sometimes lines for the VOA stamp and so the loosleaf approach can save you some time.

Seat Assignments

per NWPlatinum below - Cathay blocks out all seats except for 2D for some reason. I never understood the reasoning behind this but in any event just contact them for a seat assignment and they’ll let you have your choice. They like to block out seats for people with bassinets and babies. But you can usually get 2A, which is the best see if you’re solo traveler. Just say I want seat 2A and I’ll move if requested at the airport (never was asked to move)

Basic Visa Options for US Citizens
1. One month, one entry
2. One month, multiple entries
3. Three months, one entry
4. Three months, multiple entries
5. One year, multiple entries

Everyone needs an e-visa approval before boarding if they will enter the country. (e.g. clear customs). Connecting flights - even on separate tickets - do not require a visa IF IF IF the connecting airline has a counter in the transit area. (The airline may have their own rules.) Going back to the same country is not allowed without clearing customs first.

Expect the visa check at your point of departure. (Computer will flag your ticket.) The actual stamp is received on arrival (in most cases). (There is also the possibility of a visa insert with no need to go to 'visa on arrival'.)

i would call and postpone (and eat the $100 change fee if necessary) unless you are willing to accept the possibility of CX cancelling and rebooking on another carrier not of your choosing, as was my experience.

I'm flying HAN-HKG-YVR on 16 August, departing YVR for the return 18 August.

Any advice from my learned friends? Any likelihood of a free change from Cathay to postpone the itinerary by a couple of months to let things cool down!?
You can ask, but in all likelihood, they will say no. We are too far out and the situation is too fluid. This could be a non-issue in a few days. Also, connecting flights were operating today. We are flying a few days after you, so we too are watching.

If you can find availability for the dates you are willing to fly - and that is a big if in First - it doesn't hurt to call and ask, if you are willing to pay the $100.

Being rebooked on KE first class as a "carrier not of your choosing" is not a bad deal at all!

Full sized carryon won’t fit under the foot rest. What I did was to put the carryon in J class overhead storage right behind the F cabin after the FA instructed me to do so.

the flight to SGN and then, once it has been closed, reroute us directly to SIN. We agreed. By the time the SGN flight boarded and they printed our business class BPs for SIN, they also found our luggage and are fairly sure it will arrive with us. Now relaxing at The Pier.

That's good to know, though these are extenuating circumstances. I have a very short connection (45-minutes) off my JFK flight to DAD and if delayed on the inbound could miss the HKG-DAD flight. Have a flight from DAD to SIN that afternoon, so good to know the option of a HKG-SIN on CX might be possible...albeit at the loss of the segment mileage and BA TPs.

Kinda. If your flight was marked cancelled, yet still operated, you were only able to fly if you made it through transit security before it was marked cancelled. We landed at 5:30AM to find our 8 something SIN-SGN cancelled. In light of the events 15 hours later where we flew on a flight that was marked as cancelled, albeit without 105 passengers who had checked in and sent luggage, I wonder whether perhaps our SIN-SGN flight may have actually flown without us.

I would only recommend this if you have taken anything and everything of value out of the bag.

I refused that and asked them to put it in the upfront locker.

Not sure if anyone mentioned this yet, but it appears that CX888/889 only credit to Alaska for the point-to-point distance between JFK and HKG, not JFK-YVR-HKG, a difference of about 800 miles.

I think someone mentioned earlier in the thread it being because the flight number is the same on yvr-jfk as hkg-yvr. Sorry if this is wrong info.

100%. Every airline treats it as one non-stop for mileage earning. I have flow JFK-YVR-HKG and JFK-HKG... same 'mileage' for earning.

Small data point, I'm transiting in HKG currently, booked SFO-xHKG-HAN with SFO-HKG in CX F and HKG-HAN in VN J. We were permitted into the Wing business lounge. Our boarding passes have the VN flight numbers. I thought under the letter of the law we would be sent to a skyteam lounge but apparently not.

Still trying to figure out where I can credit the miles for these VN flights. None of the partners are any I have plans of traveling with in the near future. Not looking to go back to Vietnam anytime soon (it's a lovely place to travel but this will be my 4th or 5th trip). I guess Flying Blue may be an option (earns 200% miles) with reasonable availability for short, one way hops? Happy for any further suggestions.

Can you even credit to any Skyteam programs given that it's a CX flight number?

The boarding pass on mine shows a VN number.

Just wondering, did you turn around successfully?

Flying the last part of my ticket, and I'm considering doing a direct turn on the morning KA flights.
I have an eVisa, so I know I can clear entry immigration quickly, but am not sure how long the exit immigration line is.
