Visa Information: check out the Vietnam visa/VOA thread in the Asia forum. You can get either a visa on arrival where you get the stamp on arrival) or a "looseleaf" visa in advance from a VN Consulate in the US (which allows you to go straight to the immigration queue). There are sometimes lines for the VOA stamp and so the loosleaf approach can save you some time.
Seat Assignments
per NWPlatinum below - Cathay blocks out all seats except for 2D for some reason. I never understood the reasoning behind this but in any event just contact them for a seat assignment and they’ll let you have your choice. They like to block out seats for people with bassinets and babies. But you can usually get 2A, which is the best see if you’re solo traveler. Just say I want seat 2A and I’ll move if requested at the airport (never was asked to move)

Everyone needs an e-visa approval before boarding if they will enter the country. (e.g. clear customs). Connecting flights - even on separate tickets - do not require a visa IF IF IF the connecting airline has a counter in the transit area. (The airline may have their own rules.) Going back to the same country is not allowed without clearing customs first.
Expect the visa check at your point of departure. (Computer will flag your ticket.) The actual stamp is received on arrival (in most cases). (There is also the possibility of a visa insert with no need to go to 'visa on arrival'.)

I am trying to change my flights in Sep DAD-JFK to first week of Oct but looks like all the 'A' fare class has disappeared. I checked on CX website and called in to CX 800#. Is there a chance we might see more 'A' inventory later or is this it? I will fly my original dates if I can't get new dates.

Splitting posting of mileage between two FF programs
A brief review of these many pages hasn't located an answer to this question (if I missed it, apologies). It appears that crediting CX flights to AS's program offers the best ROI in terms of RDMs. In my case, given other activity this year in my AS account, it would also give me MVPGold for the rest of this year and through to early 2021. The issue is that the Cathay Dragon flights won't receive credit in that program.
I am also BASilver, and putting the Cathay Dragon flights into that account will get me 80 Tier Points and help get me top tier BAGold this year and run through mid-2021.
What is anyone's experience with splitting mileage credit on these flights? Should I ask for the appropriate account number be put onto each segment at check-in for that segment (or at the gate/lounge for connecting flights) or just leave any program number off my booking and request mileage for each appropriate segment from the appropriate program after traveling?

A brief review of these many pages hasn't located an answer to this question (if I missed it, apologies). It appears that crediting CX flights to AS's program offers the best ROI in terms of RDMs. In my case, given other activity this year in my AS account, it would also give me MVPGold for the rest of this year and through to early 2021. The issue is that the Cathay Dragon flights won't receive credit in that program.
I am also BASilver, and putting the Cathay Dragon flights into that account will get me 80 Tier Points and help get me top tier BAGold this year and run through mid-2021.
What is anyone's experience with splitting mileage credit on these flights? Should I ask for the appropriate account number be put onto each segment at check-in for that segment (or at the gate/lounge for connecting flights) or just leave any program number off my booking and request mileage for each appropriate segment from the appropriate program after traveling?

no problem at all. You can do it via “manage my booking” in Cathay Pacific website or during check-in.

But I will already have had both boarding passes with the initial program number. Can I change when connecting? Have a gate agent change on the onward flight as once a boarding pass is issued during OLCI, I don't believe I can make changes online.

You can credit each flight separately to a different program even before you begin your journey. Do it through the "manage your booking" tab on the CX website.

Question for those with more detailed knowledge: Does that mean I could theoretically change my return leg to some point 12 months after the day of my departure? For example, if my departure is Sept 1, 2019, could I change my return to say, July 1, 2020?
I've been on carriers before where they have said I have 12 months from the date of the outbound to finish travel instead of 12 months from the original ticketing date. Anyone have experience with Cathay on this?
