Visa Information: check out the Vietnam visa/VOA thread in the Asia forum. You can get either a visa on arrival where you get the stamp on arrival) or a "looseleaf" visa in advance from a VN Consulate in the US (which allows you to go straight to the immigration queue). There are sometimes lines for the VOA stamp and so the loosleaf approach can save you some time.
Seat Assignments
per NWPlatinum below - Cathay blocks out all seats except for 2D for some reason. I never understood the reasoning behind this but in any event just contact them for a seat assignment and they’ll let you have your choice. They like to block out seats for people with bassinets and babies. But you can usually get 2A, which is the best see if you’re solo traveler. Just say I want seat 2A and I’ll move if requested at the airport (never was asked to move)

Everyone needs an e-visa approval before boarding if they will enter the country. (e.g. clear customs). Connecting flights - even on separate tickets - do not require a visa IF IF IF the connecting airline has a counter in the transit area. (The airline may have their own rules.) Going back to the same country is not allowed without clearing customs first.
Expect the visa check at your point of departure. (Computer will flag your ticket.) The actual stamp is received on arrival (in most cases). (There is also the possibility of a visa insert with no need to go to 'visa on arrival'.)

Rebooked the inbound half of A fare (Expedia ticket) JFK-HKG-DAD to later dates via CX Australian call center just now, AU$144 per ticket change fee. Finding availability was very challenging. Couldn't downgrade to economy on HKG-DAD without upfare due to lack of J seats on some flights, further restricting choice.

Shouldn't that be irrelevant ? I was on Oneworld in A class and now I am still on Oneworld and still in A class. Routing is the same too thus I expect no difference in how it will credit to my CX account.

They left voicemails on my contact number that is in my Marco Polo profile. I also noticed that "in manage my booking" I suddenly saw a bunch of duplicate segments. They still had me on AA metal but also put me on CX metal. They did not remove the original AA metal segments until I agreed. I love Cathay <3

If you’re crediting to AA and flying a non-AA flight number then frequent flyer earning is based on distance flown.
With this fare, earning based on fare paid is a lot less lucrative than earning based on distance flown when crediting to AA.
In your case as you’re crediting to CX, CX rules apply and so this won’t be as much of a difference for you.
In you’re case as you’re crediting to CX then frequent flyer earning is based on the CX rules which means it will be distance based and will make little to no difference to your frequent flyer earnings.

Just completed the outbound itinerary SGN-HKG-LAX-ORD with first class from HKG to LAX. Overall, it was a pretty nice trip. The hardware and services from Cathay Pacific are still one of the best. However, the food quality were underwhelmed. The à la carte menu in the Wing first lounge was very limited. They even offered some of the same food (eg. noodle soup) that you can find from the business section. Very disappointed. The food on the first cabin were not impressed. Yes you can still find lobster, champagne and caviar. But the taste of food items were not as good as what I experienced 10 years ago. In the past, I was so impressed by the DimSum options, which was as good as what I can find from a decent Cantonese restaurant. But I tried several dimsum from multiple flights, they all tasted like frozen food.

They only did this for one of my tickets where travel is commencing soon. I have another one closer to December that they did not yet change.
They left voicemails on my contact number that is in my Marco Polo profile. I also noticed that "in manage my booking" I suddenly saw a bunch of duplicate segments. They still had me on AA metal but also put me on CX metal. They did not remove the original AA metal segments until I agreed. I love Cathay <3

What is the most reliable way of identifying CX D or A inventory available to those interested in changing the dates of one of these tickets?
I'm currently seeing significantly different inventory on Orbitz, ITA Matrix (sales city DAD), the Cathay site localized to Vietnam and the Cathay app localized to Vietnam. Why would this be the case?

Just successfully changed the dates of a CX ticket that was originally booked in J via Orbitz. Simple $100 change fee.
The new dates I was able to confirm weren't showing as available in D (standard business) on the Cathay site, Google Flights, ITA Matrix etc.. No idea why Orbitz had access to inventory no one else did, but I'll take it
Can't wait to fly these!

The best way to do it is to find First Standard on the CX website, searching round-trip itineraries originating in Vietnam. Play with flexible dates.
