CAUTION - TURNAROUND
"One customer did have issues. Wang Guanran, who documents his travels on hktravelblog.com, had his plans to travel to New York on Wednesday cut short when he was prevented from flying by immigration officials in Vietnam... he was detained by Vietnamese immigration officials, who said it was illegal to return to his city of origin while in transit." - Source:SCMP, 2 January 2019

Visa Information: check out the Vietnam visa/VOA thread in the Asia forum. You can get either a visa on arrival where you get the stamp on arrival) or a "looseleaf" visa in advance from a VN Consulate in the US (which allows you to go straight to the immigration queue). There are sometimes lines for the VOA stamp and so the loosleaf approach can save you some time.

Seat Assignments

per NWPlatinum below - Cathay blocks out all seats except for 2D for some reason. I never understood the reasoning behind this but in any event just contact them for a seat assignment and they’ll let you have your choice. They like to block out seats for people with bassinets and babies. But you can usually get 2A, which is the best see if you’re solo traveler. Just say I want seat 2A and I’ll move if requested at the airport (never was asked to move)

Basic Visa Options for US Citizens
1. One month, one entry
2. One month, multiple entries
3. Three months, one entry
4. Three months, multiple entries
5. One year, multiple entries

Everyone needs an e-visa approval before boarding if they will enter the country. (e.g. clear customs). Connecting flights - even on separate tickets - do not require a visa IF IF IF the connecting airline has a counter in the transit area. (The airline may have their own rules.) Going back to the same country is not allowed without clearing customs first.

Expect the visa check at your point of departure. (Computer will flag your ticket.) The actual stamp is received on arrival (in most cases). (There is also the possibility of a visa insert with no need to go to 'visa on arrival'.)

Book whatever connection you like and then enjoy the flight. BA is a separate airline Cathay has zero authority over and neither will anyone care.
The OP is wanting to drop the CX flight to Viet Nam and replace it with another CX flight (booked through avios) to another CX destination.

Depending on how close the flights are, CX could cancel one of them as an 'impossible' booking.

Interesting. I don't have a flight out of Vietnam. Didn't think there would be a problem boarding in North America. Maybe I'll buy a refundable flight out of Vietnam just to be safe.

Hello everyone!
I have a return F flight HAN-JFK-HAN. On both flights the short haul is VN, so I don’t get lounge access on return. I want it - 7 hours is very good for exploring both lounges. Can anyone confirm that it’s possible to change the VN flight to Cathay Dragon on return somehow? Sorry if stated before, the thread became too large to reread it all.

Yes it is possible. We did it day of flying with no fee.

You were not specific on your flights, but I am guessing you are flying the night flight out of JFK, landing in the early morning in HKG, then the Vietnam codeshare later in the day. If the am Dragon is available prior to flying you can pay $100 and switch.

About 3 weeks ago I was able to move my A fare about 5 days. (It was the return, JFK-HAN.) Agent also saw dates several weeks later.

I think finding the right agent helps.

Hi - Did you book through Orbitz or CX.com? Will I able to move the return date if I booked through orbitz?

Not sure if this post was aimed at me, but, here goes.

I booked directly with Cathay. However, folks have reported changing tickets from virtually all purchase points, Orbitz included. In fact, earlier this year, third-party purchasers had an easier time changing tickets.

From what I remember from posts above, in general, those that have booked via third-party have reported that prior to flying any segments, they changed with the point of purchase provider, in your case Orbitz. After flying the outbound, they changed directly with Cathay. But someone who bought from Orbitz or Expedia will have to confirm this.

CX has no way of knowing who the passenger is, especially when changing the FFP against another program.

If they'd cancel each booking where a pax name is duplicate then there would be chaos at the airport. Especially in HK where hundreds of thousands have the same name.

100% not true. They have your passport information - in both reservations. THAT would be how the system would catch it.

Name is not a unique identifier. Passport is.

If OP does this...
Will OP get caught and have both tickets canceled?
Will OP get banned from CX?
Will OP face a financial charge from CX?
Will OP be fine and it works?

The only correct answer... YMMV

....and there is my concern.
Caught and having both or one ticket cancelled is what I'd be most worried about. Getting banned from CX seems pretty unlikely given the circumstances. Good luck to CX getting a dime out of me lol.

Fine and works is of course the preference. I ended up just booking on SQ out of HKG instead, so I'm good now either way.

These known impossible bookings do cause a booking to be cancelled when they get reviewed. This can vary. Some examples on FT show this to be sometimes as late as 7-10 days in advance of flights.

Just tried emailing HCMC office, and got the following response:

"Dear Sir/ Madam,
Thank you for emailing Cathay Pacific Vietnam.
For applying refund these tickets, please contact back to your agent to check the ticket conditions and process refund.
Thank you."

This is a bit sensationalist, Do we have any evidence of this?

Anyway even if it was there is a real simple remedy, Book the other CX ticket with no passport information at all and then fill it in at online checkin for the flight, then there are no "reviews" and issues etc

Sensationalist? No.
Evidence? Yes.

Every one of those things has happened to someone on FT. Simple FT search to verify.

Likely? Each has a different degree of likelihood.

Will CX sue OP? Almost certainly not, until they do.
Will CX cancel a duplicate reservation? Probably not, but could happen.

Will your plan work? Probably, but once the data is entered, the ticket could get kicked out. Will it? Probably not, but could happen.

So... YMMV.
