Visa Information: check out the Vietnam visa/VOA thread in the Asia forum. You can get either a visa on arrival where you get the stamp on arrival) or a "looseleaf" visa in advance from a VN Consulate in the US (which allows you to go straight to the immigration queue). There are sometimes lines for the VOA stamp and so the loosleaf approach can save you some time.
Seat Assignments
per NWPlatinum below - Cathay blocks out all seats except for 2D for some reason. I never understood the reasoning behind this but in any event just contact them for a seat assignment and they’ll let you have your choice. They like to block out seats for people with bassinets and babies. But you can usually get 2A, which is the best see if you’re solo traveler. Just say I want seat 2A and I’ll move if requested at the airport (never was asked to move)

Everyone needs an e-visa approval before boarding if they will enter the country. (e.g. clear customs). Connecting flights - even on separate tickets - do not require a visa IF IF IF the connecting airline has a counter in the transit area. (The airline may have their own rules.) Going back to the same country is not allowed without clearing customs first.
Expect the visa check at your point of departure. (Computer will flag your ticket.) The actual stamp is received on arrival (in most cases). (There is also the possibility of a visa insert with no need to go to 'visa on arrival'.)

My son has his fall school schedule and found he cannot fly the second leg of this deal he got. Since it won't extend until Summer, should I cancel it with CX and will he be entitled to any refund at all?

Well, I am here in Hanoi and ready to begin my CX journey in a few days! I got a multi-entry visa in advance, and was through immigration in seconds. I'm staying at the Hanoi Hilton and got here via the Grab app...all of this thanks to suggestions from helpful posters in this thread! As a HHonors Gold, I was upgraded to the Executive Floor/Lounge, so I am looking forward to trying that. Tomorrow, I'll have the whole day to explore (no idea what I'm going to do yet), and then its off to CX F the following day! SO EXCITED and grateful!

Sorry, I am pretty sure this has already been asked / mentioned before, but due to the length and complexity of this thread, I cannot find the right post anymore:
Can anyone confirm when the latest possible day of travel is on these tickets? I have already flown the first three sectors and only have HKG-HAN left later in the year. I believe the fare rules state that travel has to be completed within 12 months from the date of the first flight, but is there any other clause that states a fixed "no later than" date?

I believe the fare rules state that travel has to be completed within 12 months from the date of the first flight, but is there any other clause that states a fixed "no later than" date?

A week ago I did Han-Hkg-sfo
i had no luggage only carry-on
A few things
1- I arrived from Bkk 6 hours before flight ,didn't want to take chances ,even though there were a few flights that were better .
I paid 6$ for l the visa letter but didn't need it .
when arriving in Han ,I went straight to the transfer desk ,and they transferred me .
lounge in Han ,told me aloud only 3 hours but after talking to them they let me stay much longer.
the flight from Han was delayed more then 1 hour ,so I had only about 20 minutes in the lounge in HKG.
the flight was great .
I booked the flight through cx website and put my AA advantage .hopefully soon I will get my miles credited .
