Visa Information: check out the Vietnam visa/VOA thread in the Asia forum. You can get either a visa on arrival where you get the stamp on arrival) or a "looseleaf" visa in advance from a VN Consulate in the US (which allows you to go straight to the immigration queue). There are sometimes lines for the VOA stamp and so the loosleaf approach can save you some time.
Seat Assignments
per NWPlatinum below - Cathay blocks out all seats except for 2D for some reason. I never understood the reasoning behind this but in any event just contact them for a seat assignment and they’ll let you have your choice. They like to block out seats for people with bassinets and babies. But you can usually get 2A, which is the best see if you’re solo traveler. Just say I want seat 2A and I’ll move if requested at the airport (never was asked to move)

Everyone needs an e-visa approval before boarding if they will enter the country. (e.g. clear customs). Connecting flights - even on separate tickets - do not require a visa IF IF IF the connecting airline has a counter in the transit area. (The airline may have their own rules.) Going back to the same country is not allowed without clearing customs first.
Expect the visa check at your point of departure. (Computer will flag your ticket.) The actual stamp is received on arrival (in most cases). (There is also the possibility of a visa insert with no need to go to 'visa on arrival'.)

so CX is able to make changes to an orbitz issued ticket? thats good news to hear. guess i'll try calling sometime to see if they can find sfo to hkg flight.
anyone able to build in a stopover at HKG too? i recall earlier posts of ppl able to add on stopover so the hkg to vietnam segment is a couple days later. can anyone still confirm if that is true? and if it costs any additional ($100?) thanks in advance!

I was physically in the wing lounge in HKG and asked that same question regarding being able to change the hkg-han leg where I could stay a few days in HKG when I fly that side of the ticket in October. Their first check was to see the change fee and asked if I would be willing to pay 107 USD. I said yes and they proceeded to look at my dates and could not find any. But, it led me to believe that if I kept calling from the states and they had seats available, then I could get the layover for the change fee. Assuming it would be the same for the DAD leg (unless the VN airline threw in a curve). Hope this helps. If I could make my ideal change, I would be asking to change the date so we could spend a few days in HKG, and then change the destination from Hanoi to Danang since we really want to go to an hoi. Will appreciate any updates you get if you call them.

was your ticketed booked on CX website or third party such as orbitz like me?? (this could affect how you were quoted) someone correct me if i'm wrong but i doubt will allow you to change the destination of return leg from HAN to DAD. i could be wrong but i dont recall hearing of that without triggering a full reprice. i guess the next step would be to try calling CX customer service and ask for the change of date for sfo - HKG and then additional layover in hkg and see what total price i get quoted. totally happy paying the ~100 USD price for that change. if CX can't help, i'll try orbitz customer service next then. any thoughts?

If you need a refund of your ticket, contact the Cathay ticketing office in Vietnam by email directly. It's painless and they offered a full refund, no cancellation fee. I won't post the email here but search for the Ho Chi Minh City ticket office contact.

Fare rules for J bookings say $200 cancellation / passenger - it'd be very useful to know if there's a chance of the CX ticketing office in Vietnam being more accommodating

was your ticketed booked on CX website or third party such as orbitz like me?? (this could affect how you were quoted) someone correct me if i'm wrong but i doubt will allow you to change the destination of return leg from HAN to DAD. i could be wrong but i dont recall hearing of that without triggering a full reprice. i guess the next step would be to try calling CX customer service and ask for the change of date for sfo - HKG and then additional layover in hkg and see what total price i get quoted. totally happy paying the ~100 USD price for that change. if CX can't help, i'll try orbitz customer service next then. any thoughts?
From all data points so far it seems though that DAD as gateway is the biggest problem here. Capacity related maybe? HAN as well as SGN appear to be easier to deal with.

Getting excited to fly this fare in August, just booked my positioning flights!
Now to find something interesting to do outside of SFO for a week .... because goodness knows I'm not paying those hotel prices for more than a night or 2, jeepers!

DAD Same-Day Update
If anyone still cares, I just successfully did same day turnaround at DAD.
CX staff met me at the bridge (I didn't request it), walked to security at transfer counter, and then took me to departure gate. Whole thing took 13 mins.
- I didn't have any checked bags (who would?!)
- I online checked in and printed DAD-HKG boarding pass in HKG on the way to DAD
- I already had received multi-entry visa to Vietnam during a previous positioning trip
CX representative didn't offer any details, but she also didn't seem surprised.
Just FYI, YMMV

CX staff met me on the bridge (didn't request), complete with a sign. Took me through the crew exit for immigration (this was helpful as line would have been a bit more challenging). I then cleared immigration (entry), had to walk out of airport and walk back in to re-clear immigration (no assist on return portion--this could be a bottleneck for people)
--no checked bags
--had DAD-HKG boarding pass
--only had VOA printed out (this probably took an extra 1 minute of work clearing immigration on entry vs. having a multi-entry visa)
FAs had a good laugh seeing me in the same seat on return. On the HKG-JFK portion, I feel like 4/6 of first class cabin had started with me in DAD...
Thanks again to BigRedBears for giving me confidence (?) that this might work! As always, YMMV
