Visa Information: check out the Vietnam visa/VOA thread in the Asia forum. You can get either a visa on arrival where you get the stamp on arrival) or a "looseleaf" visa in advance from a VN Consulate in the US (which allows you to go straight to the immigration queue). There are sometimes lines for the VOA stamp and so the loosleaf approach can save you some time.
Seat Assignments
per NWPlatinum below - Cathay blocks out all seats except for 2D for some reason. I never understood the reasoning behind this but in any event just contact them for a seat assignment and they’ll let you have your choice. They like to block out seats for people with bassinets and babies. But you can usually get 2A, which is the best see if you’re solo traveler. Just say I want seat 2A and I’ll move if requested at the airport (never was asked to move)

Everyone needs an e-visa approval before boarding if they will enter the country. (e.g. clear customs). Connecting flights - even on separate tickets - do not require a visa IF IF IF the connecting airline has a counter in the transit area. (The airline may have their own rules.) Going back to the same country is not allowed without clearing customs first.
Expect the visa check at your point of departure. (Computer will flag your ticket.) The actual stamp is received on arrival (in most cases). (There is also the possibility of a visa insert with no need to go to 'visa on arrival'.)

Data point re Orbitz bookings:
Called them the morning after my arrival (today) to process a change of the return and was offered pretty much any date - ex SFO - as an even exchange plus the $100 change fee.
Paid, confirmed, done! Totally satisfied with the outcome.

No matter what you're able to select in terms of dates, the results that will come up make it pointless.
If you have a legitimate change request (after trip has started) then call customer service and the agent should be able to take care of it.

I was responding to mster's inquiry, which appears to be an effort to determine if the tickets are valid for one year from the date of issuance, which is the normal rule on international tickets, or one year from the date of the first fight, which the fare rules appear to state.

After a 54 minute wait to speak to an Orbitz agent, I was finally connected to an agent. I asked for a simple date change for my JFK-HKG-DAD and she couldn't find any availability without triggering USD17K change fee. She offered a number of flights with $500 fee (including those with Qatar and JAL) but in ECONOMY!!!
I am tempted now to just change my booking online - USD700 and a downgrade to J.

If anyone still cares, I just successfully did same day turnaround at DAD.
CX staff met me at the bridge (I didn't request it), walked to security at transfer counter, and then took me to departure gate. Whole thing took 13 mins.
- I didn't have any checked bags (who would?!)
- I online checked in and printed DAD-HKG boarding pass in HKG on the way to DAD
- I already had received multi-entry visa to Vietnam during a previous positioning trip
CX representative didn't offer any details, but she also didn't seem surprised.
Just FYI, YMMV

Just called CX to change the inbound portion of my ticket. Outbound already flown. Although EF showing A2, and the Cathay website showing 2 First Standard tickets for sale, agent says that A is "in waitlist" and wanted to re-price it +$18K.
Is this a simple case of HUCA? Or is there something I should be telling the agent?

You can try changing online, but be aware that inventory is extremely scant.

Loyaltylobby has reported success for Orbitz bookings but I called Cathay for my CX website bookings today. Nothing seems to be available for return JFK-DAD

Did you fly out already? Loyaltylobby explicitly states that they called after they completed their flights from Vietnam to NA.
