CAUTION - TURNAROUND
"One customer did have issues. Wang Guanran, who documents his travels on hktravelblog.com, had his plans to travel to New York on Wednesday cut short when he was prevented from flying by immigration officials in Vietnam... he was detained by Vietnamese immigration officials, who said it was illegal to return to his city of origin while in transit." - Source:SCMP, 2 January 2019

Visa Information: check out the Vietnam visa/VOA thread in the Asia forum. You can get either a visa on arrival where you get the stamp on arrival) or a "looseleaf" visa in advance from a VN Consulate in the US (which allows you to go straight to the immigration queue). There are sometimes lines for the VOA stamp and so the loosleaf approach can save you some time.
Seat Assignments
per NWPlatinum below - Cathay blocks out all seats except for 2D for some reason. I never understood the reasoning behind this but in any event just contact them for a seat assignment and they’ll let you have your choice. They like to block out seats for people with bassinets and babies. But you can usually get 2A, which is the best see if you’re solo traveler. Just say I want seat 2A and I’ll move if requested at the airport (never was asked to move)
Basic Visa Options for US Citizens
1. One month, one entry
2. One month, multiple entries
3. Three months, one entry
4. Three months, multiple entries
5. One year, multiple entries
Everyone needs an e-visa approval before boarding if they will enter the country. (e.g. clear customs). Connecting flights - even on separate tickets - do not require a visa IF IF IF the connecting airline has a counter in the transit area. (The airline may have their own rules.) Going back to the same country is not allowed without clearing customs first.
Expect the visa check at your point of departure. (Computer will flag your ticket.) The actual stamp is received on arrival (in most cases). (There is also the possibility of a visa insert with no need to go to 'visa on arrival'.)

TRAVEL FROM LAST INTERNATIONAL STOPOVER MUST COMMENCE NO LATER THAN 12 MONTHS AFTER DEPARTURE FROM FARE ORIGIN.
So it is allowed to change flight segments to dates up to 12 months after the first segment is flown well into 2020 for many of us. Finding the approprite fare class to make changes is the main issue.

Of course I didn't pull the trigger, I have no need for it, but it tells me that the return travel can be 1 year after the original departure date, not the ticket issuance date.

I'm not sure if this is a valid data point, but I've flown the outbound HAN-SFO this month. Now online, CX.com is allowing me to change to multiple dates in March/April 2020 for $100 change fee. If I choose a date 1 year past my outbound, I get this: "The new dates you have selected for your booking coincide with a change in age for one or more passengers..." Seems like the right logic kicking in, but the wrong message (?).
Of course I didn't pull the trigger, I have no need for it, but it tells me that the return travel can be 1 year after the original departure date, not the ticket issuance date.

It's one of those cases where I would love to be proven wrong.

I, too, would love to hear a data point about this.
My outbound will be in July with the return in October. I can't make the return and would prefer to change it to sometime in 2020 if possible. Wondering if it's best to do that after flying the outbound first.

Hi folks, I'm trying to weight the advantages of crediting to AS vs. AA for 3 RT flights
Could anyone advise as an EXP, if the calculation below seem correct per flight, and if they could provide any opinions on if its a clear cut decision to credit to AS instead?
I fly quite alot on American and am trying to weigh that against crediting with AS which seems as it would yield me roughly ~170k AS miles total (at 350% / 400% / 475%) respectively and get me to top tier status. I primarily fly out of LAX to Asia and NY/FL domestically
Would love any thoughts!

- HAN-HK-SF RT: 14,880 Miles
- EXP American: 22,320 (1.5x) EQM / $4,140 EQD (30%) / Redeemable Miles: 40k
- It looks like 3 flights here would yield me 66,960 EQM / $12,420 EQD and 120k Redeemable Miles and only get me to Platinum for 2020?

I am ready to do so but haven't had to pull the trigger yet, but wanted to add this information.
I am in the HKG cathay lounge right now, I thought that someone here would actually be a Cathay CSR but even the lady that I spoke with had to call in.
I requested the ability to change my flight so that the yvr-hkg-han filght could be change to allow me to stay in hkg for 4-5 days and then proceed on. It appears that they were willing to let me make the change for the change fee, but there was no seat availability for the dates that I wanted in October. I might even be willing to do that leg in coach if I can change the date.
I take this as good news and if I am able to keep calling and find the date that I want, they will be willing to do it for the change fee. I replied to your comment to suggest that you may be able to change the dates for the hkg-han flight for a fee if that meets your needs, or if it is worth it to you to pay a fee to keep from being on the bad list of no show.

For those planning on not flying the last segment, please report back - or send me a pm and I will post discretely. Looking for actual data points after the fact.
Also, after you land in HKG, would it not be prudent to call - from the club in HKG so no downside to you - or go online (if possible) and uncheck yourself in for that segment?
Plans change. People get sick. I think airlines get that.
Thinking about all of us who got in on the New Year's Fare, simply bailing and leaving CX waiting and wondering, is probably not the best course of action for the group as a whole.
Be kind, rewind.

- It stops CX/KA from searching the club or paging you.
- It saves some anxiety for the CX/KA gate agents.
- It keeps CX/KA from holding the flight. and potentially delaying everyone.
- It lowers the 'annoyance' you are giving CX/KA about this fare.

The flight is 15hrs after I arrive in HKG, and it is on VN. I'm curious if I should still alert CX.

But you can check in for just the HKG leg and not the VN flight. Say something like I will have a lot of duty free shopping that I wish to repack into my luggage, so I'll handle the check in with VN on my own.

Seems like I saw a cancellation fee in the terms and conditions. I wonder if that would come into play if we cancelled or failed to show up for that last leg?

You should be looking for a no-show fee-- it's not a cancellation, simply an informing of the check in agent that I need to perform check in again at HKG for a practical reason. If it were CX metal back to Vietnam, I would not advocate this, but the probability that CX queries VN on whether or not you boarded a VN-operated segment is low. If you check in and no show, but VN tracks you to a CX lounge, there's some chance they'll come find you. If you don't check in and no show, VN will just assume you didn't make it to the airport.
