Visa Information: check out the Vietnam visa/VOA thread in the Asia forum. You can get either a visa on arrival where you get the stamp on arrival) or a "looseleaf" visa in advance from a VN Consulate in the US (which allows you to go straight to the immigration queue). There are sometimes lines for the VOA stamp and so the loosleaf approach can save you some time.
Seat Assignments
per NWPlatinum below - Cathay blocks out all seats except for 2D for some reason. I never understood the reasoning behind this but in any event just contact them for a seat assignment and they’ll let you have your choice. They like to block out seats for people with bassinets and babies. But you can usually get 2A, which is the best see if you’re solo traveler. Just say I want seat 2A and I’ll move if requested at the airport (never was asked to move)

Everyone needs an e-visa approval before boarding if they will enter the country. (e.g. clear customs). Connecting flights - even on separate tickets - do not require a visa IF IF IF the connecting airline has a counter in the transit area. (The airline may have their own rules.) Going back to the same country is not allowed without clearing customs first.
Expect the visa check at your point of departure. (Computer will flag your ticket.) The actual stamp is received on arrival (in most cases). (There is also the possibility of a visa insert with no need to go to 'visa on arrival'.)

Just to update.. while at the F lounges in HKG, I tried to get my flight date changed for the return legs of my flight. There is availability showing on the website as bookable, yet the agents claimed it was all completely booked. Not sure how to mitigate that - going to call. Debating if I should volunteer being downgraded to Biz in order to get dates moved.
Upthread there was also a case where CX compensated one pax 50% of the fare due to them being unable to make the return (different situation though).

I'm going to be in HKG over the weekend so might drop by the ticketing desk and see if they can help me identify suitable inventory, then I'll call Expedia while I'm there and see about a change. I've spent countless hours on the phone with Expedia agents, some good but most clueless, concerning these fares. Sooner or later I'll make some headway. This is fun game.

If you really have to change the dates and they refuse you could escalate through a DOT complaint and see what comes out of this situation.

Have shared on the CX forum thread that even after flying the first segment of the ticket, CX still imposes strict VN POS inventory control and such information lacks transparency online.

probably depends on the time of day. I arrived in HAN from PEK at 4 am. Immigration only took about 10 minutes.

Just wish to confirm that if I set the Cathay web page to Vietnam and run-up a booking from JFK-HKG-SGN and it shows availability in "A" -- "D" fares that does not mean there is actually availability in those fare buckets to change the return of my ticket booked in those fare categories?

So I would a) do a dummy search for SGN-JFK-SGN on the CX website, b) ignore availability for the outbound (SGN-JFK) and then c) see on what dates First Standard fares will be available for your inbound flights (JFK-SGN).

In case someone else has figured this out. We will be taking this flight from Han - YVR and then connecting on to DFW. We land in YVR at 9:45 pm and depart for DFW at 6:00 am. I can't tell whether I am going to have to do immigration in YVR or can just remain airside and look for a restful spot or have to go out and back in. Cathay says their lounge access opens 4 hours before their first flight but I can't tell if it is in a terminal that I wold have access to since we will be a US departure. All of that to say, has anyone else had to go through this yet, and what is the best suggestion. I hate to end such a wonderful time by spending the last few hours in an airport chair. Cathy's comment about opening 4 hours before a flight is pretty vague. Any ideas are appreciated, I hope I don't have to use a shuttle to go somewhere for 4 or 5 hours.

I really would prefer not to involve the DOT (especially given that my original return is in a month or so), but not a bad idea. It seems a little asinine of CX to claim that every day in a 3 month window (which is what I asked about later) has no availability even though its bookable for multiple seats online.

If you really have to change the dates and they refuse you could escalate through a DOT complaint and see what comes out of this situation.
Upthread there was also a case where CX compensated one pax 50% of the fare due to them being unable to make the return (different situation though).

I think the DOT would be inclined to not look at this too hard.
While I would love to adjust some of my tickets, INTERNATIONAL ROUNDTRIP FIRST CLASS FROM HONG KONG TO NEW YORK CITY ON CATHAY PACIFIC for ~$1100 to ~$1400 is an incredible fare and I will not make them regret it by filing a DOT complain because I want to change a ticket and I think maybe there is space available. OP can do what they want.
