CAUTION - TURNAROUND
"One customer did have issues. Wang Guanran, who documents his travels on hktravelblog.com, had his plans to travel to New York on Wednesday cut short when he was prevented from flying by immigration officials in Vietnam... he was detained by Vietnamese immigration officials, who said it was illegal to return to his city of origin while in transit." - Source:SCMP, 2 January 2019

Visa Information: check out the Vietnam visa/VOA thread in the Asia forum. You can get either a visa on arrival where you get the stamp on arrival) or a "looseleaf" visa in advance from a VN Consulate in the US (which allows you to go straight to the immigration queue). There are sometimes lines for the VOA stamp and so the loosleaf approach can save you some time.

Seat Assignments

per NWPlatinum below - Cathay blocks out all seats except for 2D for some reason. I never understood the reasoning behind this but in any event just contact them for a seat assignment and they’ll let you have your choice. They like to block out seats for people with bassinets and babies. But you can usually get 2A, which is the best see if you’re solo traveler. Just say I want seat 2A and I’ll move if requested at the airport (never was asked to move)

Basic Visa Options for US Citizens
1. One month, one entry
2. One month, multiple entries
3. Three months, one entry
4. Three months, multiple entries
5. One year, multiple entries

Everyone needs an e-visa approval before boarding if they will enter the country. (e.g. clear customs). Connecting flights - even on separate tickets - do not require a visa IF IF IF the connecting airline has a counter in the transit area. (The airline may have their own rules.) Going back to the same country is not allowed without clearing customs first.

Expect the visa check at your point of departure. (Computer will flag your ticket.) The actual stamp is received on arrival (in most cases). (There is also the possibility of a visa insert with no need to go to 'visa on arrival'.)

If it’s the last leg of your entire itinerary and if you don’t need to take a different CX flight at the same time as the HKG-HAN flight is scheduled for (or a few hours either side) then the risk is minimal. Assuming you’re not crediting to Asia Miles?

Great to hear! that's correct. is it still okay/safe to credit to AA? Arriving HKG around 6am in the morning. HKG-HAN is at 8am. Planning to buy another CX ticket departure in the afternoon instead with my BA account using Avios.

Easy... if you know what you are doing.

1. Head towards customs/immigration/transit, go down the escalator into the immigration hall. Turn hard left. (Cut through the lines if they are long, You are not clearing.)
2. If you DO NOT have your connecting bp, go straight to the transit desks and get your bp. Then go to transit security.
3. If you have your connecting bp, another hard left and you will show your bp/passport to the security person.
4. Up the escalator.
5. If you are in biz on your connecting flight, go to the far end where there is a business security line, which is way shorter.
6. You are now in the departure area.

With your connecting bp (and in business) you can be in the departure lounge less than 15 minutes from the time you get off the plane, 25 minutes if you are connecting in coach with bp. Add 10-15 minutes if you need to get your connecting bp.

No need and no problem if you show them your connecting bp or your connecting itinerary.

You can. A friend says they are now placing a warning when you check-in online saying if you do not plan to fly HKG to HAN/DAD you must tell them at least 60 minutes before the HKG-Vietnam flight departs. (My guess is they are trying to track down (in the airport) a lot of passengers who get "sick" or "travel plans change" and do not get on the HKG-HAN/DAD flight.)

What are the consequences? Probably none, BUT, they could cancel your other CX flight if they connected the dots. They could possibly cancel future itineraries. They could not post miles. They could sue... etc. Very likely, they will do nothing. But who knows... if enough people do it and it affects operations, they might step up their deterrence measures.

Only you can measure your risk tolerance.

Anyone has experience with getting into Vietnam with APAC card at DAD? I will be entering twice within about 10 days.

Also I hope CX staff at JFK would know about visa waiver for APAC card for HK passport holder?

They've probably encountered it before. Wouldn't count on them knowing it off the top of their heads, but they'll go by whatever TIMATIC tells them. So if visa waiver for HK passport holders with APEC card is in TIMATIC, then you should be fine.

So is it best to tell them 60 mins before departure that I will not fly last leg HKG-DAD/HAN? or just simply no show (trying to stay in the pier till my afternoon flight.. if possible )

If you will be "sick" it probably doesn't hurt to call them discretely (from the club).

I don't want to belabor this thought, and believe me, I am seriously thinking about abandoning at the hkg layover because I really want to include a few days there when we do the second leg of these tickets in October. We leave shortly to do the first leg and I am fairly confident that we will complete the Vietnam/thailand desires that we have and would like to introduce my wife to Hong Kong.

My thought is using the 'sick' excuse. After passing through so many stations where they are pointing a thermometer at your forehead and have health stations setup to identify sick people that they do not want to enter the country. I am wondering if I want to tell anyone in Asia that I am sick. At the very least, advising you to think about a sickness that wouldn't be contagious or detrimental to your entry into the country.

But do please share anything that works because as much as I would hate to throw away a biz ticket from hkg to Han, I further hate to arrive in han and fly right back to hkg. And if anyone has any ideas about just delaying that leg a few days, that would be ideal for me. I have tried calling CX and they said they would have to reissue the ticket and it would only cost about $25,000. I passed.

You can try to add a stopover after flying HAN-HKG. A lot of people in this thread had successfully changed their tix.

Mixed reports of Rare Millesime 2002 being served instead of krug.

There’s a thread discussing: https://www.flyertalk.com/forum/cath...pagne-f-4.html

I'm very sorry, could anyone on here kindly check availability in A for 2 pax on 18 May for HKG-JFK? Am currently booked on CX888, and Mrs NJG is not in the chirpiest of moods because she just found out that we will have to do the transit stop in YVR...

It is a really simple transfer. You will be one of the first to get to transfer security. 15 minutes (or less) from getting off the plane, you will be in the lounge.

A little while later you are back on the plane in that big beautiful seat.

CX840 has A2 and CX846 has A4. I personally prefer the timing of CX840. Good luck!

Thank you very much!

Following your pieces of information, I signed up for a trial with EF to look at the availability myself. I am a bit confused now though, as I believe fare class availability on CX is dependant on POS and married segments, correct? What if the flight combination that I actually want to take (KA294 on 17 May + CX840 on 18 May) is not showing on EF? When I do a new dummy revenue booking on the CX website, all I get is quotes in F instead of A for the long-haul sector.

On EF, I even see different fare bucket availability for the long-haul (CX840), depending on whether the HAN-HKG leg is operated by VN or KA (See enclosed pic). And I don't even want to be on either of the KA or VN flights shown in the attached screenshot.

So how do I know which availability for the long-haul is correct? Asking since I don't want to be fobbed off too easily when I call the CX hotline to request the changes.
