Visa Information: check out the Vietnam visa/VOA thread in the Asia forum. You can get either a visa on arrival where you get the stamp on arrival) or a "looseleaf" visa in advance from a VN Consulate in the US (which allows you to go straight to the immigration queue). There are sometimes lines for the VOA stamp and so the loosleaf approach can save you some time.
Seat Assignments
per NWPlatinum below - Cathay blocks out all seats except for 2D for some reason. I never understood the reasoning behind this but in any event just contact them for a seat assignment and they’ll let you have your choice. They like to block out seats for people with bassinets and babies. But you can usually get 2A, which is the best see if you’re solo traveler. Just say I want seat 2A and I’ll move if requested at the airport (never was asked to move)

Everyone needs an e-visa approval before boarding if they will enter the country. (e.g. clear customs). Connecting flights - even on separate tickets - do not require a visa IF IF IF the connecting airline has a counter in the transit area. (The airline may have their own rules.) Going back to the same country is not allowed without clearing customs first.
Expect the visa check at your point of departure. (Computer will flag your ticket.) The actual stamp is received on arrival (in most cases). (There is also the possibility of a visa insert with no need to go to 'visa on arrival'.)

Yes, I think that is good. Gives you another VN flight as a backup.
FWIW - in HCM City this morning, security and customs was 45+ minutes. (HAN can be better or worse by a little bit.) Add 45-60 minutes (very conservatively) for buses and check-in and you are still good - with a buffer - on the 3-hour connection.

I have been having a lot of trouble with the calendar so if I might just ask a question here. I don't want to change the overall dates of my two legs, but I would really like to be able to change the yvr-hkg-han leg to have a layover in HKG. Just a couple of days. I have even thought of just throwing the HKG-HAN leg away but of course that has issues as well. This is for October travel, I separated the two directions by about 6 months to get two really nice trips out of it. The other side of both legs is a lax-bkk biz deal I got for $2500 us. Does anyone know if it is remotely possible to try to get this layover, can I possibly do it on the web, and does it simply depend upon availability? I call CX and the lady all but laughed at me, said she would have to rebook the entire ticket and it would only cost me $26,000 minus the $1000 I paid. I should add that the yvr-hkg is A, and hkg-han is J.

I booked mine through Orbitz as well and found some dates showing A class availability. Does that mean I can change my date to one of those available? Does it make a difference whether or not I have to fly the outbound first prior to making the date change?

When I pull up my reservations through "Manage flights" and click on "change flights', it just takes me right back to the Manage Flights page. In the past, it used to take me to a page where I can select which flights I wanted to change.

crediting miles to AS
Wife emailed boarding pass yesterday to AS as her number was entered incorrectly upon checkin. They emailed back today asking for full ticketed itenarary including purchase price so as to ensure correct credit. Is the low price likely to result in lower mileage or is that just standard of practice?

Anyone else having trouble accessing the "change flights" page on CX website? When I pull up my reservations through "Manage flights" and click on "change flights', it just takes me right back to the Manage Flights page. In the past, it used to take me to a page where I can select which flights I wanted to change.
"According to the Changes/Cancellation terms and conditions for this booking, we are unable to proceed with your request.
The reason may be:
- This booking was not made within the valid time period."
NB: I did manage to build in a stop-over in HKG on the return in early to mid-Jan by calling in, not sure whether that might have to do with it?

03/20/2019: on the CX site, I managed to change the return leg JFK-HKG-DAD (A fare then J fare) to another date in May 2019. It was not my preferred date, but better than original booking.
I spent several hours playing with the calendar matrix as I found ExpertFlyer not reliable.

Question - I booked one of these for my son to go with us, we have since found out that he can't use the second leg due to school issues. Has anyone threw away the last leg and what happened? or should I try to change the date?

Second leg as in return portion of the ticket? Nothing will happen. You can still try to change the date... lots of information in the las 100 or so posts
