Visa Information: check out the Vietnam visa/VOA thread in the Asia forum. You can get either a visa on arrival where you get the stamp on arrival) or a "looseleaf" visa in advance from a VN Consulate in the US (which allows you to go straight to the immigration queue). There are sometimes lines for the VOA stamp and so the loosleaf approach can save you some time.
Seat Assignments
per NWPlatinum below - Cathay blocks out all seats except for 2D for some reason. I never understood the reasoning behind this but in any event just contact them for a seat assignment and they’ll let you have your choice. They like to block out seats for people with bassinets and babies. But you can usually get 2A, which is the best see if you’re solo traveler. Just say I want seat 2A and I’ll move if requested at the airport (never was asked to move)

Everyone needs an e-visa approval before boarding if they will enter the country. (e.g. clear customs). Connecting flights - even on separate tickets - do not require a visa IF IF IF the connecting airline has a counter in the transit area. (The airline may have their own rules.) Going back to the same country is not allowed without clearing customs first.
Expect the visa check at your point of departure. (Computer will flag your ticket.) The actual stamp is received on arrival (in most cases). (There is also the possibility of a visa insert with no need to go to 'visa on arrival'.)

Was this the US number listed here (https://www.cathaypacific.com/cx/en_...tact-us.html)? I've already flown my 'outbound' HAN-HKG-SFO and am now trying to change the date on my return leg. I've checked ITA Matrix for A/J availability and found some available dates, but when I called in to that number the agent quoted me a price difference of >$10,000 saying that the fare classes were only available for new bookings. HUCA?

Your best bet is to try both online and HUCA. But I would set your expectations low in terms of being able to make the change ahead of time.

For our preferred dates, 1 week later than what currently have for the JFK- DAD trip if reprice both tickets it’s over $12,000 each. If try 1 ticket it’s only $0.10. Not sure if should take the risk to move one of us to that flight and hope another seat opens up or just stick with what we’ve got. Alternative option is open Orbitz on two browsers. Get everything cue’d up and then click through for each of us at the same time. Think it’d work? Is inventory updated to the millisecond or a few minutes?

I booked directly with CX - on their US Website. When I called, the agent initially did not see any of the A space that I had found. However, with a little encouragement (basically my telling him any day would do lol) he began searching and came up with a date that worked for me.

wanted to provide a follow up. The trick above with two browsers at the same time DOES NOT WORK! Tried it and lost. Used my laptop and desktop and clicked at exactly same time. One went through, one did not. Deprive of $12,000+ for second ticket. Rebooked 3 days apart from each other now. Hoping inventory is released.

I have been having a lot of trouble with the calendar so if I might just ask a question here. I don't want to change the overall dates of my two legs, but I would really like to be able to change the yvr-hkg-han leg to have a layover in HKG. Just a couple of days. I have even thought of just throwing the HKG-HAN leg away but of course that has issues as well. This is for October travel, I separated the two directions by about 6 months to get two really nice trips out of it. The other side of both legs is a lax-bkk biz deal I got for $2500 us. Does anyone know if it is remotely possible to try to get this layover, can I possibly do it on the web, and does it simply depend upon availability? I call CX and the lady all but laughed at me, said she would have to rebook the entire ticket and it would only cost me $26,000 minus the $1000 I paid. I should add that the yvr-hkg is A, and hkg-han is J.

We plan to spend a few days at Da Nang, and then fly down to Hanoi for our HAN-HKG-USA ticket on CX. The HAN-HKG flight leaves at 1025 AM. How much connection time should we allow for this? The DAD-HAN flight would likely be on either VietJet Air or Vietnam Airlines. Is a 2 hour connection time sufficient for an in-bound domestic flight with no bags checked?

1. 50/50 you will take a bus from the plane to the terminal. That takes time.
2. VietJet is notoriously late. A lot. And they cancel flights.
3. Vietnam Airlines is pretty good at being on time, but can run into delays as any airline does.
4. The terminals are relatively far apart. You need to take a bus from domestic to international and vice versa.
5. Then you have to check-in, clear customs and security.
For me, it is too big a risk to potentially lose the New Year's fare.
If you can do 3 hours, with the 2 hour as a backup, I might try that, but, it is a risk.

Vietnam airlines has a flight that would arrive at 720am, which would give a 3-hour connection time. Yes, I understand there is always going to be a risk.

FWIW - in HCM City this morning, security and customs was 45+ minutes. (HAN can be better or worse by a little bit.) Add 45-60 minutes (very conservatively) for buses and check-in and you are still good - with a buffer - on the 3-hour connection.
