Visa Information: check out the Vietnam visa/VOA thread in the Asia forum. You can get either a visa on arrival where you get the stamp on arrival) or a "looseleaf" visa in advance from a VN Consulate in the US (which allows you to go straight to the immigration queue). There are sometimes lines for the VOA stamp and so the loosleaf approach can save you some time.
Seat Assignments
per NWPlatinum below - Cathay blocks out all seats except for 2D for some reason. I never understood the reasoning behind this but in any event just contact them for a seat assignment and they’ll let you have your choice. They like to block out seats for people with bassinets and babies. But you can usually get 2A, which is the best see if you’re solo traveler. Just say I want seat 2A and I’ll move if requested at the airport (never was asked to move)

Everyone needs an e-visa approval before boarding if they will enter the country. (e.g. clear customs). Connecting flights - even on separate tickets - do not require a visa IF IF IF the connecting airline has a counter in the transit area. (The airline may have their own rules.) Going back to the same country is not allowed without clearing customs first.
Expect the visa check at your point of departure. (Computer will flag your ticket.) The actual stamp is received on arrival (in most cases). (There is also the possibility of a visa insert with no need to go to 'visa on arrival'.)

just a funny observation, when i check my flight today and just out of curiosity click on change flight...... i got to the date page and it shows me only the date of my original flights has availability.
Click on... then it shows a refund of around 100USD ------ by "changing" to the exact same flight that i was on! i double checked the classes and they're all the same...... it's the carrier surcharge that changed. now very tempting to get this free money lol

Thank you so much for this reminder. I was planning the same activity of going to the lounge first. I have the passport required (USA) and even the e-channel entry, but it never occurred to me that I couldn't get out of the airport from there. I am going to check to see where we could get a shower on the landslide, but if you just happen to know, I would appreciate the information. We will be in transit from CX First (YVR) to CK Business on to Hanoi. I am still trying to change the tickets so that we can spend a couple of days in Hong Kong, but I am not able to navigate the Cathay website as well as the rest of these travellers.

I have no particular interest to go to downtown but all hotels near to the hotel seem to be quite bad. Anyone experienced the capsule hotel in the terminal itself? Ideal budget is under 100 US. Thanks.

It is do-able but there are a lot of complications... you need to clear security to enter departure area, then at the lounge you have to tell the front desk that you have a strong reason to enter HK (bear in mind that of course you need a valid passport that can go through customs). Afterwards they will contact the airport security, get someone to accompany you to get back to the arrival floor, then get out through immigration. This will take quite a lot of time...
instead, i'd suggest you to bring a towel with you and get a free shower at the arrival of HKG airport. Food at the landside and in HK are great as well, so no need to eat at the lounge first haha

I stayed in Old Town. $60-70 all in inc. breakfast (transp. separately). It was Zephyr Suites. I did this so I get a feel to then decide whether to stay in Hanoi on my return or look elsewhere. I had about 16 hours and went out for dinner to a place hotel recommended—don’t recall name though sure was exquisite.
Sorry if this is a bit out of topic. Does anyone have a good suggestion of where to stay in Hanoi for a 14 hour overnight layover? I have no particular interest to go to downtown but all hotels near to the hotel seem to be quite bad. Anyone experienced the capsule hotel in the terminal itself? Ideal budget is under 100 US. Thanks.

Thank you so much for this reminder. I was planning the same activity of going to the lounge first. I have the passport required (USA) and even the e-channel entry, but it never occurred to me that I couldn't get out of the airport from there. I am going to check to see where we could get a shower on the landslide, but if you just happen to know, I would appreciate the information. We will be in transit from CX First (YVR) to CK Business on to Hanoi. I am still trying to change the tickets so that we can spend a couple of days in Hong Kong, but I am not able to navigate the Cathay website as well as the rest of these travellers.

It is do-able but there are a lot of complications... you need to clear security to enter departure area, then at the lounge you have to tell the front desk that you have a strong reason to enter HK (bear in mind that of course you need a valid passport that can go through customs). Afterwards they will contact the airport security, get someone to accompany you to get back to the arrival floor, then get out through immigration. This will take quite a lot of time...
instead, i'd suggest you to bring a towel with you and get a free shower at the arrival of HKG airport. Food at the landside and in HK are great as well, so no need to eat at the lounge first haha

So I would love to hear others experience landing in HKG, using the nice lounges in transit then asking to enter HKG.

Just to close off the 'using lounges on arrival before entering HKG'. There are other threads here on FT (posted above) and the last poster there was told they had to wait 90-120 mins for an escort to be available to take them through to immigration. This was after they had had breakfast and a shower. Lounges are not intended to be used as arrivals lounges, so doing so may cause you significant inconvenience.

just a funny observation, when i check my flight today and just out of curiosity click on change flight...... i got to the date page and it shows me only the date of my original flights has availability.
Click on... then it shows a refund of around 100USD ------ by "changing" to the exact same flight that i was on! i double checked the classes and they're all the same...... it's the carrier surcharge that changed. now very tempting to get this free money lol
