Visa Information: check out the Vietnam visa/VOA thread in the Asia forum. You can get either a visa on arrival where you get the stamp on arrival) or a "looseleaf" visa in advance from a VN Consulate in the US (which allows you to go straight to the immigration queue). There are sometimes lines for the VOA stamp and so the loosleaf approach can save you some time.
Seat Assignments
per NWPlatinum below - Cathay blocks out all seats except for 2D for some reason. I never understood the reasoning behind this but in any event just contact them for a seat assignment and they’ll let you have your choice. They like to block out seats for people with bassinets and babies. But you can usually get 2A, which is the best see if you’re solo traveler. Just say I want seat 2A and I’ll move if requested at the airport (never was asked to move)

Everyone needs an e-visa approval before boarding if they will enter the country. (e.g. clear customs). Connecting flights - even on separate tickets - do not require a visa IF IF IF the connecting airline has a counter in the transit area. (The airline may have their own rules.) Going back to the same country is not allowed without clearing customs first.
Expect the visa check at your point of departure. (Computer will flag your ticket.) The actual stamp is received on arrival (in most cases). (There is also the possibility of a visa insert with no need to go to 'visa on arrival'.)

Adding a datapoint. Booked via Expedia. Have yet to fly any portion of the trip and was able to change for a bit over the $100 change fee.
Total call time was 45 minutes with most of that on hold as agent 1) checked on availability and 2) booked the changes.

I spent 3 hours on phone in total with Expedia agents, including supervisors. They can’t see availability in A and can’t change flight for me. And I see lots of A on all dates using expert flyer. I am really tired of this, just want my change..

Changing flights at check in...
We were booked on the afternoon HAN flight on VN... HKG-HAN.
Landed JFK on our domestic flight and headed to the CX gate where they were closing out the JFK-YVR-HKG flight.
Got our BPs. (No online bp's because of the CX codeshare on VN.) No lounge passes in HKG issued.
Asked about changing to the morning flight from HKG-HAN. She simply said... the 8:35am? I said yes.
Five minutes later... new bp's in hand, still in biz HKG-HAN and lounge passes for HKG issued. No fees or charges.
Moral of the story... just ask at the gate.
We were booked on the afternoon HAN flight on VN... HKG-HAN.
Landed JFK on our domestic flight and headed to the CX gate where they were closing out the JFK-YVR-HKG flight.
Got our BPs. (No online bp's because of the CX codeshare on VN.) No lounge passes in HKG issued.

Here's an example of my search process. Noticed now that ITA & Expedia are showing different A availability depending on connection with VN or KA. Can't recall if my own situation was the same as I was focussed on A more than anything else. My actual change was what Expedia was showing... KA.

For our preferred dates, 1 week later than what currently have for the JFK- DAD trip if reprice both tickets it’s over $12,000 each. If try 1 ticket it’s only $0.10. Not sure if should take the risk to move one of us to that flight and hope another seat opens up or just stick with what we’ve got. Alternative option is open Orbitz on two browsers. Get everything cue’d up and then click through for each of us at the same time. Think it’d work? Is inventory updated to the millisecond or a few minutes?

instead, i'd suggest you to bring a towel with you and get a free shower at the arrival of HKG airport. Food at the landside and in HK are great as well, so no need to eat at the lounge first haha
