CAUTION - TURNAROUND
"One customer did have issues. Wang Guanran, who documents his travels on hktravelblog.com, had his plans to travel to New York on Wednesday cut short when he was prevented from flying by immigration officials in Vietnam... he was detained by Vietnamese immigration officials, who said it was illegal to return to his city of origin while in transit." - Source:SCMP, 2 January 2019

Visa Information: check out the Vietnam visa/VOA thread in the Asia forum. You can get either a visa on arrival where you get the stamp on arrival) or a "looseleaf" visa in advance from a VN Consulate in the US (which allows you to go straight to the immigration queue). There are sometimes lines for the VOA stamp and so the loosleaf approach can save you some time.

Seat Assignments

per NWPlatinum below - Cathay blocks out all seats except for 2D for some reason. I never understood the reasoning behind this but in any event just contact them for a seat assignment and they’ll let you have your choice. They like to block out seats for people with bassinets and babies. But you can usually get 2A, which is the best see if you’re solo traveler. Just say I want seat 2A and I’ll move if requested at the airport (never was asked to move)

Basic Visa Options for US Citizens
1. One month, one entry
2. One month, multiple entries
3. Three months, one entry
4. Three months, multiple entries
5. One year, multiple entries

Everyone needs an e-visa approval before boarding if they will enter the country. (e.g. clear customs). Connecting flights - even on separate tickets - do not require a visa IF IF IF the connecting airline has a counter in the transit area. (The airline may have their own rules.) Going back to the same country is not allowed without clearing customs first.

Expect the visa check at your point of departure. (Computer will flag your ticket.) The actual stamp is received on arrival (in most cases). (There is also the possibility of a visa insert with no need to go to 'visa on arrival'.)

  1. By the official rules no, we do not have access when connecting to a CX codeshare, unless, you are a Silver elite or above with the CX MPC (Marco Polo Club). You can read more here.
  2. Yes, there is one report above of someone who got in. I can see how it is possible... Show up with your F/C bp. Show your connecting bp that says CX1234. I can see agent saying "welcome". (If we get in, we will 100% not try to hop to another lounge. If we get denied, we will try the other FC lounge.)
  3. If you buy a ticket on another OW partner (or CX if you want to risk it), you would have access. However, I would think once they scan your inbound BP, it would show the CX codeshare on VN. And you would show them a different bp. Not sure how that would work out.
  4. If we get denied at both, we will do some lounge hoping... go to a PP lounge or two... then go to the SkyTeam lounge, which doesn't look too bad. Look here.
  5. We will continue to try and move to the earlier Dragon Flight. No luck so far. (Moving to an earlier flight gives us the opportunity to fly back out of HAN to our final destination in Vietnam same day.)
  6. Most important is to do everything on the down low. Don't make a scene. You can always try the lounges a few hours later and see if you get a different agent with a different POV.
Sorry, I can't give more actual experience in HKG with codeshares, but I thought I would share our plans.

If anyone else has used the FC lounge in HKG, connecting to a non-OW CX codeshare, please share your experiences.

Cheers!
Facing the same issue in May. Look forward to hearing your experience!

In the past few weeks I have gotten one of three errors on the same ticket:
  1. A true error message that says there is a problem with the system.
  2. A message that says due to the nature of your ticket it is unchangeable.
  3. The new one today, when I click change ticket it just goes back to the manage booking page.

Calling has resulted in zero options to change the ticket without a reprice.

I believe if I pushed it hard, called enough, asked for a supervisor enough times, I might be able to get the change to go through, but, my change is just to reduce the connection time in HKG from 8+ hours to 2 hours. Not that important.
Well I can just tell you my experience with orbitz and it was tough. I called about three times over maybe four hours trying to explain everything and showing them that you could book in the classes of service and they were available.
I even got a very patient and smart agent and he still wasn’t able to do it. I guess it’s just a case of YMMV.

As mentioned above, according to CX rules, we don't qualify for CX lounge access. (Had we known that, I would not have booked. I saw CX1791 and never thought that is a VN operated flight.)

I will update next week. We will keep trying, but, we are also not losing sleep over this. It is a very nice to have, but not a must have.

My apologies if I said anything wrong. (Hard to read tone in posts.) Thanks for reporting back your actual experience.

My apologies if this has been answered but I think the jargon may be suppressing my understanding. And could you please add this to the wiki

1-May Han (KA0296) Business to HKG (CX0888) to YVR First
1 Oct Yvr (CX0865) First to HKG (KA0299) to Han Business

Will I have access to the lounge in HKG? Not sure if there is a lounge in Han or YVR.

We have very long layovers in HKG and plan to run into the city and hoping to get a shower before continuing on.

Combined with JAL Business from LAX to BKK ($2500), my Southeast Asia agenda will be complete for at least a couple of years.

Data point: I was able to change an outbound leg (HAN-HKG-JFK) a few weeks after booking, before flying it. I had changed only the HKG-JFK leg (in A) to create an overnight layover in HKG. Paid $100ish fee.

Just flew the outbound on another booking (SGN-HKG-JFK) a few days ago, now logging into CX.com, I see options to change the return leg to many dates (I saw at least 3 days with availability around my travel date, which is a few weeks from now) for $100 change fee) Not planning to change. All flights booked with CX directly.

As an aside: why does anyone book these through third parties? Reading through this thread makes that seem like a headache to deal with. Did people do this just because booking after fares were pulled from CX.com? Or in hopes of higher probability of the error being honoured through OTA? It's my first time on an error fare so not sure if the latter is a real phenomenon, but from reading every page of this thread I'm certain I'll never book an error on OTA when available direct. Heck, hearing about people being on 4+ hour phone calls with Orbitz for a flight change makes me want to avoid OTAs altogether, not just for error fares...

KA from HAN to HKG, connecting to CX First - Yes, you will have CX FCL access
CX from YVR to HKG in First - Yes you will have access to CX lounge in YVR
KA from HKG to HAN, connecting from YVR CX First - Yes, you will have CX FCL access in HKG

FWIW - LAX to BKK with JAL - you will have access to the FL and OW/Qantas lounge access. (Qantas First if you are OW Emerald)

DM'd Expedia on Twitter and was told CX authorized them to change for $100 if A/J is available. Already flown the outbound.

EDIT: they did not calculate fare difference when they said this even though I provided the flight details already. Does not work.

It used to be 10pm. But when I was there two weeks ago, the server told me they changed it to 11pm coz someone complained.

NOW WHICH ONE OF YOU DID THIS?!

It seems as if people are having an easier time changing the return once they’ve taken the first segment.

Has anyone actually tried changing the ticket while in transit in Hong Kong either in the lounge or a CX Service Centre?

Successfully changed my A tickets for 56 USD directly on CXs webpage. Forgot to take a screenshot of the cost change matrix but this is how it's looking right now. So yes it's possible.. I suggest to put change bot outbound and inbound to get this calendar.. even if you intend to change only one of the flights. I haven't flown the first segment and booked directly on CXs website.

I tried to do the same thing on their website. What I could see was only a few days were available which allows for change without paying a huge amount of fare difference.
Is there any reason why those days and not the others because what I've learned on expertflyer.com was that many of the other days had A fare available

i proposed doing this a few posts back, however, a helpful FTer reminded me that I should check the fare rules regarding stopovers. For my particular fare, it seems like that change would violate the rules. It's unclear to me what state that leaves the ticket in.

Do let us know if you learn more.

There are sometimes credit card promotions with OTAs (earn more miles per $ spent) as well as rebate.

what I think is that CX have limit the amount of A/J mistake fares tickets. So whatever is available for change at minimal cost should be those from “cancelled mistake fare tickets”. So If 10 persons cancelled their mistake fare tickets and 10 slots will appear. Then someone manage to change n left behind new slots. Depending on the no of cancelled tickets, there will be some availability here n there. I think CX will treat this as special A subclass or something similar and separate from the Norma A class.

No I don’t mean fixing anything that has to do with stopovers. I just mean changing the ticket. Period. So you’re on the way there, and want to change you’re return to Vietnam to another day. I’m just wondering if you’d have more success dealing with an actual human being in front of you.
