CAUTION - TURNAROUND
"One customer did have issues. Wang Guanran, who documents his travels on hktravelblog.com, had his plans to travel to New York on Wednesday cut short when he was prevented from flying by immigration officials in Vietnam... he was detained by Vietnamese immigration officials, who said it was illegal to return to his city of origin while in transit." - Source:SCMP, 2 January 2019

Visa Information: check out the Vietnam visa/VOA thread in the Asia forum. You can get either a visa on arrival where you get the stamp on arrival) or a "looseleaf" visa in advance from a VN Consulate in the US (which allows you to go straight to the immigration queue). There are sometimes lines for the VOA stamp and so the loosleaf approach can save you some time.

Seat Assignments

per NWPlatinum below - Cathay blocks out all seats except for 2D for some reason. I never understood the reasoning behind this but in any event just contact them for a seat assignment and they’ll let you have your choice. They like to block out seats for people with bassinets and babies. But you can usually get 2A, which is the best see if you’re solo traveler. Just say I want seat 2A and I’ll move if requested at the airport (never was asked to move)

Basic Visa Options for US Citizens
1. One month, one entry
2. One month, multiple entries
3. Three months, one entry
4. Three months, multiple entries
5. One year, multiple entries

Everyone needs an e-visa approval before boarding if they will enter the country. (e.g. clear customs). Connecting flights - even on separate tickets - do not require a visa IF IF IF the connecting airline has a counter in the transit area. (The airline may have their own rules.) Going back to the same country is not allowed without clearing customs first.

Expect the visa check at your point of departure. (Computer will flag your ticket.) The actual stamp is received on arrival (in most cases). (There is also the possibility of a visa insert with no need to go to 'visa on arrival'.)

Successful change?

I just successfully (I think) changed my itinerary tonight on CX website. Original outbound was SGN-HKG-ORD in May. I changed it to SGN-HKG-LAX-ORD in July for extra $47. If I wanted direct flight from HKG to ORD, I would need more than $22K for the fare difference. I also moved the inbound flight in November a few days ahead too. Given there have been plenty of talks about how difficult is to change the ticket, I found the process were pretty straightforward. I actually spotted a few other days change with less than $100 are available.

Now here is the strange thing. In a few minutes, CX sent me 5 eticket confirmations with 3 of them are old itineraries and 2 are new. I was bit worried so I checked the booking again on CX website. It still showed the new itinerary. I guess I need to call them to confirm?

I was booked in VN J, but told the agent it was booked on one ticket as a CX codeshare. No lounge invitation

Does anyone have differing experiences? At JFK on the way back to HKG will they ask for visa or just in Hong Kong? This helps plan.

Will do simple review when home about JAL economy.
Thanks.
Was this on your positioning flight, or flying CX? I posted about my experience at JFK using CX. The agent was running around from supervisor to supervisor to make sure the visa I had was okay.

At the end of the day they have no way to verify if your visa is valid, but if you’re gonna fake a visa to board I would suggest making sure the date matches your arrival date into Vietnam.

Just to be clear - were you booked into VN J or were you booked into the CX codeshare on VN J? Did you print your BP's yourself?
(Please don't misinterpret how I am asking my questions - I am trying to get clarity.)

We have a long layover in HKG (5am to 2pm I think) then on the CX codeshare on VN J with zero luck changing the last flight. (I get an error every time.) Obviously would be hugely disappointing if we were denied entry into the FC lounge for the long layover.

When we print BP's at home, the invite to the FC lounge has been right on the BP. I am hoping it will be for these as well. And with the flight number being CX1791, I hope it doesn't flag as a VN flight.

Several of us just went directly to the Vietnam Embassy website. (In our case, the Vietnam Embassy in The United States website.) Very straight forward process. No need for invitation letters or other things. We all got one year ME Visa's. Payment via PayPal.

I have been asked in BKK when I was flying BKK-HAN (and then continuing on the separate CX New Year's fare). I simply said transiting and showed the HAN-HKG bp.
No questions asked or followup questions. (I have my Vietnam multiple entry visa, but, wanted to see what would happen without it.)

Man... I don't get the 'fake a visa' thinking... in a communist country... (or any country...) and risk a long term ban... and risk losing an international FC ticket... and needing to buying a separate walkup ticket... for an investment of ~$25?!?!?!

If you have an onward bp to another country, just show that and you are good to go.

One can try to 'fake a visa' I guess - and will probably have no issues - but why risk it... for ~$25!.

Visa Check

this was on our positioning flight. I have no intention of faking a visa. In fact, when being directed what line to stand in for immagration, even though there was a shorter, we did exactly what the officer said for precisely the reason of not disobeying a communist country. If we weren’t planning on entering Vietnam again, is where the question came up if they would ask at JFK or just HKG because as I mentioned they never asked to see it period on any of our positioning flights.

LOL. Try to disobey an immigration officer in the U.S. and see what's coming your way. And last time I checked the U.S. wasn't a "Communist Country" (Vietnam is Socialist btw).

Did you alrady fly part of this ticket before making the change with CX?

Faking a Visa

I just want to be clear to everybody here about talk of “faking a visa.” You would fake a visa to board the segment back to Vietnam, but throw away the last segment which a lot of people are doing. So they have no intention of taking HKG-Vietnam and entering Vietnam. That’s why there’s all this talk about faking a visa just so you can get on board the flight to Hong Kong.
Now I would not suggest this as others have pointed out for $25 you’re taking a risk. But the fact still remains, and I’m not gonna not share the information, CX has no way to verify if you have in fact a valid visa.

There was no fare difference for you other than $47?? That's incredible... I was just now quoted $26K, had to call it in since it was booked by AmEx Travel & not directly with CX.

There was $100 change fee. The base fare seems to be the same but the surcharge was cheaper than what I paid before. So net net I only paid $47. I still can't believe that. The nice thing about CX's webstie is you can search plus and minus three days when making change and you can see exactly which dates you need to reprice to +$20K and which ones you can change for the cheap.

i just read on the e-visa website from Vietnam. It actually says that airline can apply for a special account for use to verify the e-visas...
So faking a e-visa may be not practical leaving you only the VOA letter option.

Perhaps. But I can assure you CX does not have that capability in JFK.

Was this a J ticket or A? I assume business is a bit easier to find availablility...
