Visa Information: check out the Vietnam visa/VOA thread in the Asia forum. You can get either a visa on arrival where you get the stamp on arrival) or a "looseleaf" visa in advance from a VN Consulate in the US (which allows you to go straight to the immigration queue). There are sometimes lines for the VOA stamp and so the loosleaf approach can save you some time.
Seat Assignments
per NWPlatinum below - Cathay blocks out all seats except for 2D for some reason. I never understood the reasoning behind this but in any event just contact them for a seat assignment and they’ll let you have your choice. They like to block out seats for people with bassinets and babies. But you can usually get 2A, which is the best see if you’re solo traveler. Just say I want seat 2A and I’ll move if requested at the airport (never was asked to move)

Everyone needs an e-visa approval before boarding if they will enter the country. (e.g. clear customs). Connecting flights - even on separate tickets - do not require a visa IF IF IF the connecting airline has a counter in the transit area. (The airline may have their own rules.) Going back to the same country is not allowed without clearing customs first.
Expect the visa check at your point of departure. (Computer will flag your ticket.) The actual stamp is received on arrival (in most cases). (There is also the possibility of a visa insert with no need to go to 'visa on arrival'.)

Dont take this the wrong way, but are you following me on FT? Everytime I make a post in every area of FT you always respond. Not that I mind, frankly. Your answers are usually very good, and you’ve been very helpful. But between this thread, Lifemiles, Hilton, Cambodia, and other parts of FT it has me wondering? I’m not taking offense if you are since I usually enjoy your feedback. I’m just wondering...
Back to the topic at hand, I still haven’t heard they’re issuing a refund. Orbitz is still in the process of talking with them and they haven’t responded yet about a refund. If they stonewall orbitz does anyone have any suggestions on how to get a refund since it was an IRROPS?
Back to the topic at hand, I still haven’t heard they’re issuing a refund. Orbitz is still in the process of talking with them and they haven’t responded yet about a refund. If they stonewall orbitz does anyone have any suggestions on how to get a refund since it was an IRROPS?

True I don't know who paid what, but, profiling the 5 of us in first, 2 of us seemed to fit the stereotype. The much older well dressed Asia lady speaking only Cantonese - and her son - didn't seem like the type that would be in the market for these super discounted fares. Nor did the very well dressed and business orientated man across from me.
(FWIW - all FC passengers but me got off in YVR.)
On my previous HKG-JFK flight this year, there were 3 of us on the discount fare. Again the remaining two just didn't seem the type. Non-English speaking, well dressed, older, Could they have been? sure. But just didn't seem the type.
On my outbound, a few weeks ago, there were only two of us in first. In talking to the other passenger, she confirmed she was not on the New Year fare.
The real point is the first class cabins and business class cabins have not been full on any of my flights.
(FWIW - all FC passengers but me got off in YVR.)

In your defense, if you’ve been doing MR’s for a long time (or as long as I have) you can usually pick out whose paying, and whose also doing the MR. Sure, it’s not a proven scientific fact. But I think I’ve gotten pretty good at it by the people I’ve approached and met on my MRs.
Not to mention on this particular run with only 6 seats (not always being full) it’s even easier.
i chose SGN-HKG-JFK over Presidents’ Day weekend and I was shocked that nobody else in F and then J we’re on my flights. Pretty sure there were people on the SGN-HKG portion on the MR, but nobody continued onto JFK at least on the days I flew.
Not to mention on this particular run with only 6 seats (not always being full) it’s even easier.

Dont take this the wrong way, but are you following me on FT? Everytime I make a post in every area of FT you always respond. Not that I mind, frankly. Your answers are usually very good, and you’ve been very helpful. But between this thread, Lifemiles, Hilton, Cambodia, and other parts of FT it has me wondering? I’m not taking offense if you are since I usually enjoy your feedback. I’m just wondering...

Regarding the refund, just give it a bit of time. This is an IRROPS situation, it only happened a few days ago. You have all the documentation and you'll get your full refund. They just have to sort it out.

Visa Check
As data point, no visa check until immigration at HAN last night. Expected when checked in for first flight in US, nope. 3rd flight in US - going to NRT, nope. At NRT when boarding the plane they asked if I had visa, said yes and offered to show, but they said was no need to present it.
Does anyone have differing experiences? At JFK on the way back to HKG will they ask for visa or just in Hong Kong? This helps plan.
Will do simple review when home about JAL economy.

So...since there has been all this discussion over Visa issues, can anybody recommend the best/,most reliable way to obtain a visa for multiple-entry? I will be flying from the US, staying in Vietnam for a few days, flying back to New York, and then the next day after arrival in New York, flying back to Hong Kong. I am planning on dropping the last segment in my reservation, but recognize I will need a visa for check-in. Links would be helpful. THANKS SO MUCH as always, FT!
