Visa Information: check out the Vietnam visa/VOA thread in the Asia forum. You can get either a visa on arrival where you get the stamp on arrival) or a "looseleaf" visa in advance from a VN Consulate in the US (which allows you to go straight to the immigration queue). There are sometimes lines for the VOA stamp and so the loosleaf approach can save you some time.
Seat Assignments
per NWPlatinum below - Cathay blocks out all seats except for 2D for some reason. I never understood the reasoning behind this but in any event just contact them for a seat assignment and they’ll let you have your choice. They like to block out seats for people with bassinets and babies. But you can usually get 2A, which is the best see if you’re solo traveler. Just say I want seat 2A and I’ll move if requested at the airport (never was asked to move)

Everyone needs an e-visa approval before boarding if they will enter the country. (e.g. clear customs). Connecting flights - even on separate tickets - do not require a visa IF IF IF the connecting airline has a counter in the transit area. (The airline may have their own rules.) Going back to the same country is not allowed without clearing customs first.
Expect the visa check at your point of departure. (Computer will flag your ticket.) The actual stamp is received on arrival (in most cases). (There is also the possibility of a visa insert with no need to go to 'visa on arrival'.)

CX is absolutely playing games with inventory. On 2-18 CX 831 got delayed 10 hours due to sick co-pilot, and my friend could not take the flight due to work. This was not our fault, and completely CX’s fault. He wanted to change the return from JFK-SGN in May. Everyday he asked the ticket counter agent to change his return in May was “sold out,” despite Expertflyer displaying plenty of A and J space.
I’m now in the process of trying to get a refund for the ticket for him as CX claimed he was a “no show” even though he very much showed up at the counter 3 hours prior to departure and told them he wasn’t flying and that he wanted a refund. The counter agent told us to contact Orbitz. Now CX is telling Orbitz he was a “no show.” Thankfully the counter supervisor remembered us, so all they have to do is ask the counter supervisor if he did in fact ask to cancel which he did.
Still waiting for Orbitz to get back to us as they are waiting to hear from CX. What were really upset about is that this whole ordeal was not even our fault, it was completely CX’s and they’re not acting fairly.

Surely if there was no IRROPS, or we at least had knowledge of the delay the night before I could understand being considering a “no show.” But when the blame solely lies on CX I’m not entirely sure how anyone could be labeled as a “no-show” when they delay the plane on their own accord and give you no time to make alternate plans or arrangements.

No. This was a CX IRROPS situation. It’s not our fault if CX decides to delay the plane 10 hours, two hours before departure, and we cannot make that work. Then they refuse to re-book you on another date because it’s “sold out” with the fare bucket games they are playing.

Note that (b) must be 'mutually agreed', and doesn't appear to allow unlimited date changes.

In the sense you feel they are unfairly playing with availability, they are abiding by ther conditions of carriage. They only have to carry you on the next flight, or within a reaosnable period of time. Or allow cancellation.

That’s what I plan on doing with my flights. You can log into manage your flights on Cathay and input your AA and AS frequent flyer number for each individual flight or just hang on to your boarding pass after your flights and submit it to AA and AS.

Another data point how this sale did not hurt CX.
On CX 888 today - one other person in First bought on the sale. The other three clearly did not. And we went out with one open seat.
Business class had multiple open seats. (This matches my previous flights this year.)
So once again, there was plenty of room for CX to sell more premium seats. The way I see it, CX got cash for seats that would have gone to FF tickets, at a rate that is probably comparable or more than what OW partners pay CX.)
On CX888 now from YVR to JFK and the Krug tastes good! Cheers everyone.

I've found CX to be very straightforward and easy to deal with on changing these fares. We initially changed our return date from JFK by a few days - all done online, USD100 change fee per person. Then just now I called to add a stopover in HKG to our return flights - done in minutes on the phone, change fee of USD100/HKD785 which was then reduced to HKD580 as a result of the taxes/fees having been reduced.

Zeroing out inventory has downstream effects as we see with a misconnect. If Cathay had no intention of allowing changes they should have made it clear when they honored the fare. They could have reissued tickets with new fare conditions or offered full refunds. This passive-aggressive way of blocking inventory isn't the decision I'd expect an airline with Cathay's reputation to make. In the end no good deed goes unpunished.
