CAUTION - TURNAROUND
"One customer did have issues. Wang Guanran, who documents his travels on hktravelblog.com, had his plans to travel to New York on Wednesday cut short when he was prevented from flying by immigration officials in Vietnam... he was detained by Vietnamese immigration officials, who said it was illegal to return to his city of origin while in transit." - Source:SCMP, 2 January 2019

Visa Information: check out the Vietnam visa/VOA thread in the Asia forum. You can get either a visa on arrival where you get the stamp on arrival) or a "looseleaf" visa in advance from a VN Consulate in the US (which allows you to go straight to the immigration queue). There are sometimes lines for the VOA stamp and so the loosleaf approach can save you some time.

Seat Assignments

per NWPlatinum below - Cathay blocks out all seats except for 2D for some reason. I never understood the reasoning behind this but in any event just contact them for a seat assignment and they’ll let you have your choice. They like to block out seats for people with bassinets and babies. But you can usually get 2A, which is the best see if you’re solo traveler. Just say I want seat 2A and I’ll move if requested at the airport (never was asked to move)

Basic Visa Options for US Citizens
1. One month, one entry
2. One month, multiple entries
3. Three months, one entry
4. Three months, multiple entries
5. One year, multiple entries

Everyone needs an e-visa approval before boarding if they will enter the country. (e.g. clear customs). Connecting flights - even on separate tickets - do not require a visa IF IF IF the connecting airline has a counter in the transit area. (The airline may have their own rules.) Going back to the same country is not allowed without clearing customs first.

Expect the visa check at your point of departure. (Computer will flag your ticket.) The actual stamp is received on arrival (in most cases). (There is also the possibility of a visa insert with no need to go to 'visa on arrival'.)

Try it in the land of the free and see how the US immigration officers treat such people.
I think you are misunderstanding the poster. The poster had no intention of ever entering Vietnam on the forged visa, the plan (I assume) was to end the journey in HKG and throw away the HKG-HAN leg. However, at the checkin desk in the US, he cannot tell the agent that he is planning on throwing away the final segment, therefore the agent will not check him in without a Vietnam visa. He only needed a document to satisfy the checkin staff, not any immigration officials.

Still not a course of behavior that I'd recommend (why take the risk that CX discovers it and cancels your ticket) but it's hardly immigration fraud if he never sets foot in Vietnam with the document.

And it's one more cross MRers have to bear for hidden city ticketing/short checking an airline.

Hope this helps someone.
I am trying to do this on my flight booked on Orbitz. My original booking classes were J (han-hkg) and A (hkg-yvr). When I try to search for J and A space on expertflyer and switch, orbitz displays a fare difference of about ~$8k. Is this because I am changing the outbound ?

The real letter was obtained while he was airborne and delivered by the service by escort who also expedited her thru the VOA office.

The only issue was the airline made him prrint the letter. And the service stung him for the stamping fee (was initially represented as inclusive)
As someone with experience on this twice from 2 days ago on CX831, and then again when I rebooked myself because of the huge delay the next day on CX831 (JFK-HKG), they have no way to check.

In the end since I rebooked for the next day I did get a $25 VOA. But the visa I had already used the first day on the flight I didn’t end up taking was fine too.

However, CX agents are actively suspicious of Vietnamese Visas as I’m sure this fare has caused many agents cause for pause. Let me share what happened the first day. I showed my used visa that had an entry date of feb 14, the agent was running around to supervisors to ask if my (used which they didn’t know) visa was acceptable since it was good from feb. 14- March 13 and we were departing Feb 18.

The visa should show the day youll be arriving Vietnam. She asked us if we had already used this visa, to which I of course replied no, and if we had return tickets out of Vietnam. I said I had not used the visa and that “trust me as Americans we have no intention of staying in Vietnam and we have return tickets.” She never asked to see the tickets out of Vietnam.

Its important the date on your visa (whether used or not) shows the date you’ll be arriving in Vietnam or will cause check-in agents to get suspicious. So if you do want to throw away the last segment, and want to use your old visa since you don’t intend on entering Vietnam (I would not recommend doing this) just ensure you change the date to when you would arrive in Vietnam. If it shows another date they get suspicious.

The second day, when I had a legit VOA Visa, the counter agent questioned me and asked if I had used this visa before, and asked if I had a return ticket to go back from Vietnam to the States. However, in the end she didn’t ask to see the ticket out of Vietnam and I told her it was a new visa and this time it actually was.

My heart almost dropped into my stomach the first day when I showed the old visa (all I had since I had forgotten) originally and thought they would not check me in.

But to answer your question, at the end of the day the airline has absolutely zero way of verifying if your Vietnamese Visa is good, so you all can do as you wish. As others have pointed out, for $25 I would not play around with it but it’s up to you.

I don’t know if our tickets got flagged or what. I still don’t know why CX is playing this fare bucket game. Please see my post #1623 about my experience with Orbitz and trying to change to flights that had A5 and J9.

Even though we had a delay, and a rebooking at the airport, my friend tried to change his ticket to May directly through the CX ticket counter at the airport, and they played the same game with the inventory. Every date he gave to change to the agent at JFK said was “sold out.”

If you booked through orbitz, I would not expect to be able to change your A ticket and stay in first class. It wasn’t to either downgrade you to J or put you in F for an 18k+ fare difference. At least that has been my experience, but CX may have done something to our ticket?

Update for my fellow FTers. I was able to successfully change my ticket.

This is for fare basis AAARRVN8 which booked into A/J. I booked via Priceline. Calling them was useless as they always quoted a really high $ figure, even for flights with clear A/J availability. I flew the outbound already, so that opened up calling CX directly for changes instead. Preparing for the worst, I just called, and the change was actually super easy - probably thanks to advanced research into the issue. I made sure to feed the agent flights with definite A/J availability. Note, I was only able to get that by forcing a stopover in HKG, which I am fine with.

What I did was search using ITA matrix like this:

I was looking for late 2019 or early 2020. Late 2019 was basically non-existent. I was worried about booking into 2020, since some reported that ticket validity is one year from purchase, although my receipt didn't mention that, just one year from travel commencement and also something about only until Jan 31 2020. I decided to try a date in early January first, and that worked. Only owed the $100 change fee per passenger, plus a minor tax for HKG of about ~$10-20 (too excited at that point to care )

So basically, if you want to reschedule just the return flight, you may have luck in early 2020. There were also some dates from now until October open, but Nov/Dec were completely unavailable.

I understand what you're saying. But I'm also talking about a previous poster saying that they saw someone being refused entry at Vietnam immigration, possibly over a visa issue. If a flyer wants to skip the last leg, I agree that won't constitute immigration fraud.

Has anyone found out first hand if they got CX F (or J) lounge access in HKG when connecting from CX F to CX codeshare operated by VN (J)?

Within 24 hours, yes, but had to go through cc company. (I do not think CX even replied to the cc company.)

Outside 24 hours? Of course, one would have to pay the penalty. It was in the fare rules. (At least on my ticket.)

I'm in this exact boat right now. Trying to cancel a ticket for refund because I can't fly the original dates and CX is playing with inventory in such a way as to prevent date changes without a massive reprice. In this case, I believe CX is purposefully frustrating our attempts to use the fare and the right thing to do is either stop playing games with the fare buckets or provide a full refund.

I get that CX has been very generous in honoring the fares (they didn't have to), but it's very disturbing that they're playing these kinds of games. Either you honor the fare in its entirety or not at all.

If you look up thread a bit, people have definitely been able to cancel without a fee but YMMV.
