Visa Information: check out the Vietnam visa/VOA thread in the Asia forum. You can get either a visa on arrival where you get the stamp on arrival) or a "looseleaf" visa in advance from a VN Consulate in the US (which allows you to go straight to the immigration queue). There are sometimes lines for the VOA stamp and so the loosleaf approach can save you some time.
Seat Assignments
per NWPlatinum below - Cathay blocks out all seats except for 2D for some reason. I never understood the reasoning behind this but in any event just contact them for a seat assignment and they’ll let you have your choice. They like to block out seats for people with bassinets and babies. But you can usually get 2A, which is the best see if you’re solo traveler. Just say I want seat 2A and I’ll move if requested at the airport (never was asked to move)

Everyone needs an e-visa approval before boarding if they will enter the country. (e.g. clear customs). Connecting flights - even on separate tickets - do not require a visa IF IF IF the connecting airline has a counter in the transit area. (The airline may have their own rules.) Going back to the same country is not allowed without clearing customs first.
Expect the visa check at your point of departure. (Computer will flag your ticket.) The actual stamp is received on arrival (in most cases). (There is also the possibility of a visa insert with no need to go to 'visa on arrival'.)

So for me 2 "back-to-back" E-Visas worked for entry / exits in Hanoi!
I applied and had issued my 1st E-Visa, and PRIOR to using it, applied and had issued a 2nd E-Visa with slightly later dates.
I entered HAN on the first E-Visa 11 Feb exited 13 Feb, and entered HAN on second E-Visa 16 Feb exited 18 Feb.
Absolutely no issues at customs, went directly to Immigration and was processed and through within a few minutes on both occasions. I traveled on an Australian passport.
So for any other of you taking advantage of this "special" First Class fare, E-Visa is a great and simple option.

Given that FT is supposed to be a forum of frequent flyers sharing thoughts and ideas I’d wrongly assumed that everybody here would have done some international travelling. How wrong was I on that?

No doubt the OP had a visa to enter for positioning purposes and planned to throw away the return leg from HKG-HAN, thus was not planning a second entry into Vietnam. Despite the fact that he was planning to throw away the last leg (entering Vietnam) the airline check-in staff would still require seeing a valid visa. It's not a mistake I would make but I could see how one could overlook this complication, as the number of visas was valid for the traveler's purposes but not for the airline's purposes.

No doubt the OP had a visa to enter for positioning purposes and planned to throw away the return leg from HKG-HAN, thus was not planning a second entry into Vietnam. Despite the fact that he was planning to throw away the last leg (entering Vietnam) the airline check-in staff would still require seeing a valid visa. It's not a mistake I would make but I could see how one could overlook this complication, as the number of visas was valid for the traveler's purposes but not for the airline's purposes.

I would assume (perhaps wrongly) from your post that you were born on a TPAC flight and never researched ANYTHING here before you had already experienced it. Many things look clearer in the rear view mirror. :-) Some of us don't already know everything and deeply appreciate the patient goodwill of more experienced FT folk. I arrive back into DAD at 7:15pm and am wanting to book a 1:20am flight to PEK on MU to catch CX for my return to the States. My question is this: is there any way to transit at DAD? Or as long as I have a multple entry VISA, can I go through immigration, check in for the MU flight to PEK and then go back? Will the 6 hours create a problem at immigration?

All, our HAN-HKG sector will be on CX 1790, which is a code share on a service operated by Vietnam Airlines. I have existing AAdvantage, BA Executive Club and Alaska FFPs but not sure which one would accept this sector. Any thoughts?
Note the rest of our flights are CX and KA flight numbers which we will be crediting to AS.

It has to be something airline check-in failed to spot.
A dodgy letter can be an answer, but he'd be stupid actually proceeding to Vietnam with forged letter (as opposed to using such letter to short check, which is argurably feasible if not ethically questionable)

Since this happened in the Visa on Arrival pickup area and not in the immigration entry lines, my guess is this had to do with some issue with his VOA invitation letter that the airline check-in missed as you stated.
Since the airlines are on the hook for paying the immigration fines for any refused entries like the case I witnessed, airline check in staff are incentivized to verify (and spot fake) visa documents so even forging an VOA invitation letter or EVisa is risky for a planned short check/hidden city ticketing . I imagine if CX check in staff caught a case like this, denied boarding and refusal to waive change fees/fare differences or refusal to allow the ticket to be rebooked would follow. With perhaps local law enforcement involvement also being thrown in the mix.
Pennies in front of a steamroller. It might, even probably work. But the risks definitely outweigh the rewards IMO.

The only issue was the airline made him prrint the letter. And the service stung him for the stamping fee (was initially represented as inclusive)

Take a look at my previous posts. I checked EF and called Orbitz 4 times on 4 different days before they could actually change it. They still couldn't get the connecting flight in J from HKG to HAN on the same day, so I forced a 1 night stop over in HKG and booked the connection to HAN the next day, because it is more important to me to get the SFO to HKG segment in A.

It makes me roll my eyes that anyone would risk even a Y flight over a $25 visa or try to forge it. If they skip the last segment, then that's ethically questionable though technically would work. But those who actually went up to the immigration officer with a fake visa or invitation letter, what were they thinking? I don't know why many posters bring up "communist" country, what does it matter when the visa is forged? Do they think democratic countries treat visa forgers better? Try it in the land of the free and see how the US immigration officers treat such people.
