CAUTION - TURNAROUND
"One customer did have issues. Wang Guanran, who documents his travels on hktravelblog.com, had his plans to travel to New York on Wednesday cut short when he was prevented from flying by immigration officials in Vietnam... he was detained by Vietnamese immigration officials, who said it was illegal to return to his city of origin while in transit." - Source:SCMP, 2 January 2019

Visa Information: check out the Vietnam visa/VOA thread in the Asia forum. You can get either a visa on arrival where you get the stamp on arrival) or a "looseleaf" visa in advance from a VN Consulate in the US (which allows you to go straight to the immigration queue). There are sometimes lines for the VOA stamp and so the loosleaf approach can save you some time.

Seat Assignments

per NWPlatinum below - Cathay blocks out all seats except for 2D for some reason. I never understood the reasoning behind this but in any event just contact them for a seat assignment and they’ll let you have your choice. They like to block out seats for people with bassinets and babies. But you can usually get 2A, which is the best see if you’re solo traveler. Just say I want seat 2A and I’ll move if requested at the airport (never was asked to move)

Basic Visa Options for US Citizens
1. One month, one entry
2. One month, multiple entries
3. Three months, one entry
4. Three months, multiple entries
5. One year, multiple entries

Everyone needs an e-visa approval before boarding if they will enter the country. (e.g. clear customs). Connecting flights - even on separate tickets - do not require a visa IF IF IF the connecting airline has a counter in the transit area. (The airline may have their own rules.) Going back to the same country is not allowed without clearing customs first.

Expect the visa check at your point of departure. (Computer will flag your ticket.) The actual stamp is received on arrival (in most cases). (There is also the possibility of a visa insert with no need to go to 'visa on arrival'.)

Also the transfer in HKG coming from DAD was a little annoying. Thai airways gets it so right. Had to get on a bus for the remote stand and walk for a while to get to the gate.

Lol not sure why someone would brag about that, much less to the crew. What I don’t get is why people chose YVR? Wouldn’t you want to maximize miles so JFK was the obvious choice? When I got wind of this fare, (and only had 30 minutes before they pulled it as it turned out) I just chose JFK because it was the most miles.

If I had had time to ponder, plan, and compare, I would’ve taken F to ORD given that it was only $1200. But what drove people take YVR where you get the least amount of miles?

Local MRers have access to Canadian eTA but not ETSA.

Lufthansa has taken a passenger, who didn't show up for the last leg of his ticketed journey, to court in an apparent bid to clamp down on "hidden city" ticketing.

According to a court document, an unnamed male passenger booked a return flight from Oslo to Seattle, which had a layover in Frankfurt. The passenger used all legs of the outbound
flight, but did not catch the Frankfurt to Oslo return flight. He instead flew on a separate Lufthansa reservation from Frankfurt to Berlin.

Lufthansa saw this as a violation of their terms and conditions and is seeking €2,112 (around $2,385) in compensation.
A Berlin district court dismissed the lawsuit in December, but Lufthansa's spokesperson confirmed to CNN that the company has "already filed the appeal against the decision."

Ive noticed nobody has discussed (nor probably wants to) throw away the last segment. I don’t plan on doing this, but it would be nice to know from people who have thrown away the last segment what happened for the benefit of everyone else here. I doubt CX will do anything to anyone, but who knows? I would think you’d really have to piss off CX for them to go after you.

I noticed in the case you cited above the guy threw away an LH segment on the same day he TOOK an LH flight. If people do want to throw away the last segment CX segment, I cannot not stress enough DO NOT take a CX flight on the same day you throw away the last segment. Personally I wound just stay away from CX altogether if possible to get back from Hong Kong.

100% agree.

When I do a MR or any trip for that matter I do my best to not stick out. It kills me when you see THAT person that’s on a MR and they’re just sometimes rude or obnoxious and one of the “do you know who I am” type. I’d never ever ever discuss the “great” deal I got . Currently on a MR to HK and PEK on AA and CX and doing my best to fit in lol.

Yeah exactly. It’s one thing to chat up the crew and just be a nice person. But to openly brag about the fare to the crew seems quite obnoxious.

What I certainly do enjoy though is trying to pick out the FTers who are obviously on the same MR you’re on. Its always fun, I sort of make a game out of it. It’s a great and fun way to meet new people from the community. This was easy to do when HU had those $1300 J fares to Changsha. Me and the only other white guy alone on the flight made eye contact and said “are you also one of the only white guys to take your vacation holidays to Changsha in the spring too?” and last month the $2300 AA J fares to BKK a guy was on my exact flights till we finally realized on the last segment and had a nice chat about FT etc...

Are you on the AA PEK-LAX J for $1200? I’m doing that one next month...

I remember on the NH YVR-HND-SYD fare seeing a lot of US and Canadian passports transiting HND and boarding the SYD flight. While we didn't strike up a conversation, we tacitly acknowledged each other with a smile.

Its also nice to know you’re not alone in being crazy and flying around the world over a span of 2-4 days for points and status and there are other nutters out there exactly like you!

In my case I did go all the way to JFK and I live in NYC so it’s the obvious choice. If I lived in Seattle or Vancouver I’d get out in YVR, as it wasn’t even a mileage run, for me, as I made a vacation of it. The stop in YVR was disruptive to sleep so not ideal, but I was booking the flight quickly of course. Wanted to leave DAD on the later flight and that meant taking CX888 or having an awkward layover in HKG forcing a hotel night too.

I also keep a low profile but I’m sure people can tell I’m flying on a cheaper fare (younger, traveling with wife and clearly on leisure). I agree, just try to fit in and no need to mention who paid what.

I don't fly for miles, I fly to travel. YVR was my preferred destination out of the ones possible. Miles and status are nice extras that come with travelling, but not the main purpose for me.

Choose yvr for lower cost, for two people worked out to be 400 USD less. When i was looking, costs to all other places were hugher. Jfk had been fixed. Also as a holiday from EU and HAN unlikely to be direct, didn't want to travel too long in p2. ORD as an attraction doesnt do much.

My orbitz reservation says I need to call in to make changes. I see A class available on a date that works. Am I missing something about changing online or are the people that are making changes getting this done over the phone?

Because not everyone books these fares as a mileage run. Here is a number of valid reasons to book and fly to the closer destinations:

1. You live at or close to these destinations.
2. You have family or friends who live at or close to these destinations, and you want to visit them (Bear in mind that not everyone on FT lives in the US or even North America. There are plenty of us who reside in Asia).
3. You want to go on holidays / vacations to these destinations.
4. You have business in or close to these destinations.

I’m sure there are more good reasons that I can think of right now...

Yes you got it that’s the trip I’m on. I booked as two parts though. I booked tha CX Black Friday premium economy rt Sfo-hkg and nested pek-lax inside it. Part one was 2/14-2/17 and part two early March. Sfo-Lax-hkg-pek-hkg-sfo. I was able to book AA 192/3 and upgrade to F hence the Hkg routing.

See my past post regarding my experience trying to get it changed through Orbitz. The post is #1623. By this point you’re not gonna be able to change the tickets. They are hiding the space from Orbitz, and will want to downgrade your segment to J. That’s your only option if you want to change dates.

On another note, a friend of mine booked DAD-JFK roundtrip. His Vietnam to HKG segments are in Y and his segments to JFK are in F. He paid a total of $900. Wish I would’ve known about that option. Thought it was really interesting when he showed me the itinerary and he got to pay only $900.

Visa Question

I got a visa for a one time entry. I used it, and now I’m returning to Vietnam tomorrow. When I present this printed visa to check-in tomorrow, will the airline know if I used that visa already?
