CAUTION - TURNAROUND
"One customer did have issues. Wang Guanran, who documents his travels on hktravelblog.com, had his plans to travel to New York on Wednesday cut short when he was prevented from flying by immigration officials in Vietnam... he was detained by Vietnamese immigration officials, who said it was illegal to return to his city of origin while in transit." - Source:SCMP, 2 January 2019

Visa Information: check out the Vietnam visa/VOA thread in the Asia forum. You can get either a visa on arrival where you get the stamp on arrival) or a "looseleaf" visa in advance from a VN Consulate in the US (which allows you to go straight to the immigration queue). There are sometimes lines for the VOA stamp and so the loosleaf approach can save you some time.

Seat Assignments

per NWPlatinum below - Cathay blocks out all seats except for 2D for some reason. I never understood the reasoning behind this but in any event just contact them for a seat assignment and they’ll let you have your choice. They like to block out seats for people with bassinets and babies. But you can usually get 2A, which is the best see if you’re solo traveler. Just say I want seat 2A and I’ll move if requested at the airport (never was asked to move)

Basic Visa Options for US Citizens
1. One month, one entry
2. One month, multiple entries
3. Three months, one entry
4. Three months, multiple entries
5. One year, multiple entries

Everyone needs an e-visa approval before boarding if they will enter the country. (e.g. clear customs). Connecting flights - even on separate tickets - do not require a visa IF IF IF the connecting airline has a counter in the transit area. (The airline may have their own rules.) Going back to the same country is not allowed without clearing customs first.

Expect the visa check at your point of departure. (Computer will flag your ticket.) The actual stamp is received on arrival (in most cases). (There is also the possibility of a visa insert with no need to go to 'visa on arrival'.)

Is that an “I’ve done it and it works” type of “” or a “you could try some things that may cause it to post separately” type of “”?

Is just a thought, if I would have done I would have not asked LOL
I m just curious if there is any way that one can get credit for both flights.

it's driven by flight number not seat number. as long as you have the same flight number, doesn't matter what your seat is. it's just not going to happen.

SO they give you one boarding pass with two seats? Since you have to switch seats on the second leg somebody must check you as being boarded which would mean second flight.
Anyway, I want to know from somebody that did it , not just speculations

Yeah I feel slightly bad actually that I was chastising somebody a few pages back about changing the ticket. Because they were right.

Cathay Pacific is either honoring the fare or they’re not honoring the fare. They cannot make up their own rules on these tickets. There is A4, and J9 on my dates I want to change to, but it’s showing orbitz agents A:L. And they told me that means I’d be put on the “waitlist” and unable to be confirmed. I don’t even know what that means. I never even heard of such a thing.
If the classes of service are available, then there’s no reason why I should not be allowed to change it. And frankly I’d be curious to know what the DOT says regarding this because if the airline wants to honor the fare, then they have to do so. I don’t want to ruin it for everyone so I probably won’t file a complaint, but they don’t get to selectively choose what parts of the T&C’s they get to honor, and which ones they don’t.

Experience regarding changing ticket online with Cathay purchased ticket:

When I choose not to change the date for departure but only change the date for return, I found a couple return dates right after my orginal dates to be available for change for 72USD. I then searched this combination for the rest of the year (not changing departure but change the return), all dates were 25k USD plus except for ONE date in June for 72USD. I proceeded with changing but errored out online. Then I called them and the agent made the change for me for 72USD.

I suspect this date was available because some other error fare peeps changed away from this date and left one ticket open. You guys if you want (and have time to do so) can try your luck.

Though now after changing the return date, my change flight button errors out every time I click on it. Won’t be able to check for another change anymore.

Good luck!

Pax do change seats sometimes at transit stops. Perhaps their preferred seat was not available on one leg, or perhaps they got an upgrade. Whatever.

But that doesn’t change the back end calculation. Same flight number within 24 hours and it credits as the same, single flight, origin to destination.

But, if you want to try it for yourself you have nothing to lose except changing seats.

Going to the DOT is exactly the type of behaviour that discourages airlines from honouring these types of tickets in future. The airlines give an inch and you want to take a mile.

2. Return is in March. We land at 5:40am. The connection is not until 14:30, on CX codeshare / Vietnam Air metal. Anyone access the First Class lounge in HKG when connecting to a CX codeshare / Vietnam Air Metal with this fare? (I get we should have access, but looking for someone who has done it on this fare.)

Again, looking for actual experiences on this fare vs what people have been told by airline reps.

Thanks!
Not on this fare. But my last trip on CX in Dec took 10 days to post. So I wouldn't be too bothered.

100% agree with you which is probably why I won’t be filing any complaints. I consider myself very lucky to have gotten this ticket, so while it’s disappoitnting, I’m not gonna cry and moan about it. CX was really nice to even honor these fares. It just seems inherently wrong for them to not abide by the T&C’s. They’re either honoring the tickets or not...

But yes, I agree with your point of view. I’m not really sure why they care if people move dates either? I’d actually be doing them a favor since I want to switch off Memorial Day weekend, with a full F class, to a random weekend that’s empty.

My guess is they are hoping for some breakage.

To me it doesn't seem inherently unfair. When an airline says they're going to 'honour' tickets I don't take it too literally. On one interpretation it can mean little more than they will allow passengers to travel what they have booked. I personally don't assume it means they are going to honour the contract, and the fare, to the letter.

The airlines would be within their rights to cancel these outright. Leaving us with nothing. But instead they say they'll honour the flights as a gesture of good will.

Now if it's a gesture of good will, that inherently indicates the original fare and contract is not in force. Because there'd be no need for 'good will' if you had a fully enforceable contract.

Therefore it's a bit of give and take. The airline lets us fly, and we are to be happy with that. It's a bit of fun. If we don't like the new 'rules' we can cancel.

Do anyone really want CX to fully abide by the fare and contract? Even to the extent of repricing the ticket, as per the rules, if you drop the last segment from HKG back to Viet Nam?

I guess CX could have come out upfront and said they'll allow passengers to fly, but not make any changes. With the option for people to cancel if they weren't happy with those terms.

I would like to say a gigantic thank you to those who posted the first posts of this thread. Flew the return in F and everything credited correctly to BA, which for me meant going to Silver almost from scratch. The experience itself was nice, but nothing extraordinary. Not once during the trip did I get the feeling of "WOW, this is really luxurious!". Perhaps it is the informality of everything these days or the fact that F (on CX) does not really differ that much from J (on QR), except that the seat/bed is wider. Because of this, what I am most thankful is easy and cheap BA Silver (absolutely love having lounge access and passing long lines of people) and visiting NY for a quick two-day trip.

this isn't speculation as i have done it. normally you are ticketed the same seat on the entire flight and you do NOT even get a second boarding pass because you do not get off the plane. JFK-YVR is a fifth freedom flight for cx. only those whose final destination is YVR get off the plane. everyone coming in from JFK remains on the flight while the crew comes on to clean, restock the food, and change crew. this isn't new and other airlines do the same thing.

you are assigned one seat number throughout, you are free to move around the same cabin of course provided that there are empty seats, but your ticketed seat number remains unchanged from JFK-YVR-HKG. they aren't issuing you a new boarding pass since you won't be "boarding" the second leg. also, your seat number is blocked for those boarding from YVR-JFK so they have to pick other seats.

I am in NYC right now and will fly back on fare basis CAARRVN8 on tuesday:
Feb 12 CX0899 EWR-HKG
Feb 13 KA0220 HKG-DAD

On the way here I was flying in first class which was a wonderful experience, however I found the catering to have been mediocre and find the QR J food to be just as good. The big seats make a difference on such a long flight though! I tried to change the last leg to a date a bit further in the future. Online I can only change the whole return EWR-HKG-DAD. Cathay agent told me that it's not allowed to change a single sector, can anybody tell me where this is made evident in the fare rules please?
Edit: Now they are telling me that I can build in a stopover in HKG but not for one month, only one day, which sounds a bit odd to me...

Do I have any chances of shortchecking my bag to HKG if they are not willing to change the date of the last leg? It's just a 1:55h layover.

Many thanks for your appreciated help!
