Visa Information: check out the Vietnam visa/VOA thread in the Asia forum. You can get either a visa on arrival where you get the stamp on arrival) or a "looseleaf" visa in advance from a VN Consulate in the US (which allows you to go straight to the immigration queue). There are sometimes lines for the VOA stamp and so the loosleaf approach can save you some time.
Seat Assignments
per NWPlatinum below - Cathay blocks out all seats except for 2D for some reason. I never understood the reasoning behind this but in any event just contact them for a seat assignment and they’ll let you have your choice. They like to block out seats for people with bassinets and babies. But you can usually get 2A, which is the best see if you’re solo traveler. Just say I want seat 2A and I’ll move if requested at the airport (never was asked to move)

Everyone needs an e-visa approval before boarding if they will enter the country. (e.g. clear customs). Connecting flights - even on separate tickets - do not require a visa IF IF IF the connecting airline has a counter in the transit area. (The airline may have their own rules.) Going back to the same country is not allowed without clearing customs first.
Expect the visa check at your point of departure. (Computer will flag your ticket.) The actual stamp is received on arrival (in most cases). (There is also the possibility of a visa insert with no need to go to 'visa on arrival'.)

I had to go through their Twitter desk and it was resolved but they did not attach my AS FF # so that took a while. I flew JAL sfo-nrt-han with no middle name and it was smooth sailing. FYI

It appears CX is still changing the rules on changes. Not commenting good/bad or right/wrong, just providing information.
Yesterday I could have changed the timing of my last flight (on the return) to Vietnam for the $100 in change fees. (Not looking for a date change, just trying to avoid the 7+ hour layover in HKG before the short flight to HAN.)
Today, nothing but errors: (Sorry, we are unable to complete your request. Please try again later. [IBE_EXT0016_S007])
We booked directly with CX.
Called but they wanted to reprice at $24k.

CX has been known to be more strict with matching names than other airlines so hopefully they’re lenient on the missing middle name or else I’ll be stuck in Vietnam.

doesn't really matter what program you belong in, same flight number does not get credited as two segments. it's a technical stop so it doesn't count as two segments

Due to length of JFK-HKG sector you get the longer long haul tier points of 160 in J and 240 in F vs the more usual long haul tier points of 140 in J and 210 in F.

I tried to change the return of my flight with a segment that has my fare classes available. You can even book a ticket into those fare classes (F,J). When I tried to change it through orbitz website, it wants to downgrade me to business class on all segments into I class, plus a $180 fee.
When I called orbitz the guy didn’t seem to really know what he was doing, and said he could not confirm a change into the classes even though they were available but he could put me on a “waitlist?”
Is this just a HUCA scenario with a bad agent or has CX completely locked down your dates on these tickets? I remember reading a few pages back where someone who booked through orbitz called in, and an agent was able to confirm and he was able to keep his original cabin classes. I’m just wondering if I should try again or it’s pointless?

Looking for people having actual experience with this ticket on two areas.
1. Flew the CX outbound leg about a week ago. Miles have not posted on AA. Anyone have their AA Miles posted from this fare? How long did it take? (I know of three different people that are waiting for AA miles to post.)
2. Return is in March. We land at 5:40am. The connection is not until 14:30, on CX codeshare / Vietnam Air metal. Anyone access the First Class lounge in HKG when connecting to a CX codeshare / Vietnam Air Metal with this fare? (I get we should have access, but looking for someone who has done it on this fare.)
Again, looking for actual experiences on this fare vs what people have been told by airline reps.
