Visa Information: check out the Vietnam visa/VOA thread in the Asia forum. You can get either a visa on arrival where you get the stamp on arrival) or a "looseleaf" visa in advance from a VN Consulate in the US (which allows you to go straight to the immigration queue). There are sometimes lines for the VOA stamp and so the loosleaf approach can save you some time.
Seat Assignments
per NWPlatinum below - Cathay blocks out all seats except for 2D for some reason. I never understood the reasoning behind this but in any event just contact them for a seat assignment and they’ll let you have your choice. They like to block out seats for people with bassinets and babies. But you can usually get 2A, which is the best see if you’re solo traveler. Just say I want seat 2A and I’ll move if requested at the airport (never was asked to move)

Everyone needs an e-visa approval before boarding if they will enter the country. (e.g. clear customs). Connecting flights - even on separate tickets - do not require a visa IF IF IF the connecting airline has a counter in the transit area. (The airline may have their own rules.) Going back to the same country is not allowed without clearing customs first.
Expect the visa check at your point of departure. (Computer will flag your ticket.) The actual stamp is received on arrival (in most cases). (There is also the possibility of a visa insert with no need to go to 'visa on arrival'.)

In my experience that CX flight with the technical stop in Canada only ever counted as HKG-JFK for me. Though I did HKG-YYZ-JFK.
I asked them once casually and was told that technical stops don't count. Just like an emergency diversion to XYZ wouldn't count as an extra segment. I was shown some T&C where it was said that mileage calculation doesn't need to follow great circle mapping and CX at their sole discretion will determine mileage credited regardless of actual miles flown.
Many other programs have similar verbiage in the fine print. Bottom line you probably wont succeed in getting credit for an extra segment if it was a technical stop not reflected in your boarding passes.

Question on the change of Date on this route will it has to be the same no of stops or it can be additional stops also. like original is DAD-HKG-SFO but can it be DAD-HKG-LAX-SFO in fare class to get the historic price.
And also if we need to know the what are fare code while reservation is constructed or it can be also known after booking ?

Curious what people are doing with the Vietnam Visas (non E-Visa folks). My mother and sister-in-law will be flying from Taipei to Hanoi to start their journey.
I have applied to Vietnam visa a few years ago using random websites - $6 USD to get the "approval letter", and $25 USD for single entry Visa on Arrival.
They planned to drop the last segment (HKG-HAN) and go home directly from HKG, so in that case do they need multi entry Visa on Arrival ($50) ? Or just 2x of that $6 approval letters are enough?
*** Also looking for data points where people changed their flights after flying the first segment - i know historically it wouldn't cause the ticket to re-price, but curious if anyone has first hand experience. They plan to fly the inbound 2 days earlier if possible.
I have applied to Vietnam visa a few years ago using random websites - $6 USD to get the "approval letter", and $25 USD for single entry Visa on Arrival.
They planned to drop the last segment (HKG-HAN) and go home directly from HKG, so in that case do they need multi entry Visa on Arrival ($50) ? Or just 2x of that $6 approval letters are enough?
*** Also looking for data points where people changed their flights after flying the first segment - i know historically it wouldn't cause the ticket to re-price, but curious if anyone has first hand experience. They plan to fly the inbound 2 days earlier if possible.

They will need a second visa to board the aircraft from, e.g., JFK to HKG. At the point of embarkation at JFK, they will not allow them to board the aircraft without it since the ticketed itinerary is all the way to HAN.

Yes, the invitation letter is enough to board the flight. The visa waiver cannot be used multiple times in 15 (or maybe 30, I forget) days, but the VOA and e-visa can. So you can get VOA on the first visit and on the return just get the approval letter and save the $25 each for the actual stamping fee.

Just bring some cash (USD/EUR/SGD etc) and change at the airport (or better in the city if you venture that far) or use an ATM in airport (most ATM in Vietnam will charge you a modest fee for cash withdrawals). If you change to VND in your home country the exchange rate offerred will be very poor.

As indicated, the EQM is the same for everyone, I listed the bonus and total amounts for a MVP Gold, my current status. Certainly this flight helps in getting me towards renewing that status, but does not achieve it on it's own.

Data point: my month-end credit card statement has just closed, and transactions on the statement includes the charge from CX on January 1, 2019. The statement has additional details on the airfare not shown on the online portal platform - interestingly, the statement lists the airfare transaction as B booking class (economy); while e-ticket and confirmation both show D.
