CAUTION - TURNAROUND
"One customer did have issues. Wang Guanran, who documents his travels on hktravelblog.com, had his plans to travel to New York on Wednesday cut short when he was prevented from flying by immigration officials in Vietnam... he was detained by Vietnamese immigration officials, who said it was illegal to return to his city of origin while in transit." - Source:SCMP, 2 January 2019

Visa Information: check out the Vietnam visa/VOA thread in the Asia forum. You can get either a visa on arrival where you get the stamp on arrival) or a "looseleaf" visa in advance from a VN Consulate in the US (which allows you to go straight to the immigration queue). There are sometimes lines for the VOA stamp and so the loosleaf approach can save you some time.

Seat Assignments

per NWPlatinum below - Cathay blocks out all seats except for 2D for some reason. I never understood the reasoning behind this but in any event just contact them for a seat assignment and they’ll let you have your choice. They like to block out seats for people with bassinets and babies. But you can usually get 2A, which is the best see if you’re solo traveler. Just say I want seat 2A and I’ll move if requested at the airport (never was asked to move)

Basic Visa Options for US Citizens
1. One month, one entry
2. One month, multiple entries
3. Three months, one entry
4. Three months, multiple entries
5. One year, multiple entries

Everyone needs an e-visa approval before boarding if they will enter the country. (e.g. clear customs). Connecting flights - even on separate tickets - do not require a visa IF IF IF the connecting airline has a counter in the transit area. (The airline may have their own rules.) Going back to the same country is not allowed without clearing customs first.

Expect the visa check at your point of departure. (Computer will flag your ticket.) The actual stamp is received on arrival (in most cases). (There is also the possibility of a visa insert with no need to go to 'visa on arrival'.)

So yes, theyre ignoring their own fare rules, but I'm quite sure that they will be more than happy to waive the cancellation fee if a passenger decides not to travel. To me, its a game. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose. If the airline is nice/reasonable about their mistake, I'll not push my luck. If they arent (yes, I'm talking to you, Alitalia - I flew that Christmas sale despite getting cancelled/messed up two times), then its a different story.

For my part, I'm happy CX is honoring these very generous tickets, and I think the majority of us here feel the same. Nobody thought this was going to happen.
Yes, they definitely could have zerored out A space. And in that situation I wouldn't dispute the charge nor would I have a valid claim. That's not the case here.

Context matters here.
They absolutely could have zeroed out inventory, and that would be that. But were are discussing hypotheticals - CX has not done that, and whether you feel personally entitled to the fare conditions given the circumstances does not matter in a dispute. The point I'm trying to make is in regards to the contract and fare that has been offered - irrelevant of what should have happened and the ethical perspectives surrounding the situation.

They could have done that, but they didn't. I'm sure they ran the numbers of the various scenarios that could have occurred before announcing anything.

When airlines don't honour travel people complain. And it seems, now, that when airlines do honour travel people still complain.

I tend to agree - it's those who just can't accept a good deal that kill it for the rest of us. Any other airline looking at the demands generated by [a minority] of people here on FT will simply cancel the tickets outright in future. It seems they have nothing to lose as they can't win, either way.

Wrong. Historical fare is based on what airline usually charge for the route in the fare class. CX definitely does not charge $900 for usual fare for even in discount F and you know this.

Do you have anything supporting this statement? That's not true, not to mention the multiple people that have changed their dates based on the historical fare basis published Dec 31; i.e. no price difference. What CX usually charges for this fare when is irrelevant when we're looking at the fare rules.

Some are obviously not happy with CX. I get it - you feel that you have been disadvantaged. Many of us do not share that view and are happy that CX are honouring this fare and not unilaterally cancelling the tickets.

I agree that CX could have been up front about making it more difficult to change the tickets, but at the pricing level paid, I booked assuming that changes would be difficult if not impossible to achieve as flexible tickets are almost always notoriously expensive and I did not expect CX to ruin their inventory for a whole year simply to honour this fare.

Reading the various demands/requests of CX on this thread it seems obvious to me that the eventual outcome of such complaints will be that airlines will simply decide it’s not worth the hassle of honouring their mistakes and will take the decision in future to just go straight down the unilateral cancellation route, after all this has very little downside for them in the grand scheme of things despite what all the armchair lawyers may shout on this forum.

In my mind this is all about being reasonable. If you’re not happy spending 40 or so hours in CX J/F on the dates you chose when you booked your $1500 (or whatever you paid) ticket, why don’t you contact CX, privately, and see what you can work out with them as others have done? There are many reports of the cancellation fees being waived in this thread. I am sure that CX will be more than happy to make a one time exception and give you your money back in return for cancelling your ticket. You can then use your $1500 (or whatever you paid) to buy another ticket between Vietnam and the USA on another carrier which offers you the level of flexibility that you require.

Can we all just stop complaining about petty BS when it comes to date changes. You got a CX F ticket for 1/10 the price, and the airline is honoring it. Yet people are still finding things to complain about? Really?

Cx has honored this fare to the letter, really amazing. Completed the trip earlier this week, was able to change the dates online for free on a c ticket. Missed a trick on upgrading the outbound to jfk in F at the lounge, the service was spotty in J but the miles posted correctly and left a very positive impression of the way cx handled this. Thanks cx and thanks OP.

They did that in the beginning to stop people from changing this to preferred dates (read: most popular dates for the route concerned).
Ethical perspectives? I'd reckon that since CX has publicly admitted to making a mistake here and will honour tickets which have been bought for 800-1500 USD instead of 20K-30K USD doesnt exactly make this unethical in any way, especially since most people on this very forum are aware that most sales they stumble upon are indeed unintentional.
The only situation in which one could argue that the non-adherence to their own fare rules is unethical would be for someone who bought this without even suspecting that this may be unintentional. The probability that even just one of the thousands of bookings they got for the route has been done by a completely unaware person just randomly searching for fares between Da Nang and New York on NYE is rather slim I guess.
For me, this whole special sale business is a game between the airlines and the travelling public. If a passenger makes a mistake, airlines wont budge. So if the airline makes a mistake, some of us go ahead and book these fares. Some airlines will openly (CX) or rather silently honour the fare they sold (i.e. Aeroflot recently), others will refund and cancel, and then theres some who go shady ways (Alitalia christmas sale with non-communicated cxls). The latter ones are are fair game to me, i.e. not to be spared, while I'll just accept defeat on the second kind and will be thankful to the first kind.
That being said, again, I would expect CX to cancel any ticket for free if asked to do so, especially as they are not honouring the fare rules with regards to changes in restricted booking classes (J,D,I,A AFAIK). I completely fail to see any unethical behavior on CX' side here.

Flew DAD - HKG - JFK (F) and credited to AA.
For HKG - JFK (direct, no stop in YVR) received the following: 12,105 EQM, $2,421 EQD. For RDM (as EXP): Base: 8,070. Bonus: (9,684 (elite) + 4,035 (cabin) = 13,719). Total miles: 21,789.

Hope this helps.

I don't even think their zero'ing out to prevent changes was to be draconian. I imagine they needed to get a handle on their inventory, and there is no way to do that if thousands of tickets are being changed and availability is fluctuating.

Do airlines or GDS have separate inventories for new itinerary booking and changing existing itineraries? I haven't heard of it before. Is this a known concept? If so, how can one search the inventory for rebooking? It seems EF only shows inventory for new bookings? Would KVS tool show the rebooking itinerary?

As yerffej201 pointed out (and has been pointed out a number of times previously in this thread), this fared allowed changes to be made before departure at the historical fare level. A number of members, including myself were able to do this.

I would argue, though, that if CX is thumbing its nose at the fare rules than it's not honouring the ticket; it's only partially honouring it. If you go on-board and was told 'Sorry, no pyjamas or caviar for you because you booked a mistake fare but we have a lovely pre-packaged ham and cheese sandwich for you', you'd be rightly unhappy.

Cathay has said it's honouring the ticket. The ticket includes (is?) the conditions of the fare purchased. If the rules aren't being honoured, then the ticket isn't being honoured (at least not in its entirety).

I'm sure the percentage of customers that have an issue with the way the fare is being honoured is quite low. In any case, I would not be surprised if they had factored these potentials in anyways before deciding not to cancel tickets.

I've heard from multiple folks that have cancelled their tickets and not received the full refund, and have been given the runaround by CX customer service. Is that fair?

LOL... really? You’re upset you can’t change to the dates you want for paying 1/10 the price of a F mistake fare they’re honoring in full, and that’s the comparison you use?

Here we go with the assumptions. Again. For the record, I made a date change, that I wanted, in line with the published fare rules. I'm merely agreeing with those who believe CX's abrogation of the fare rules is akin to them not honouring the fare.

Also when has an airline ever done that on a mistake fare?
So, "They're either going to honour our fare or not" extends to awarding miles but not adhering to the rules of the fares? In other words, if I understood your above post correctly, you'd be up in arms if CX didn't award mileage because you would considering it not honouring the fare, but the by CX not allowing changes that are otherwise permitted under the fare rules, you're totally fine with that? That's CX honouring the fare? Just as long as you get mileage, you're A-OK with what's going on.

Okay. Is this a better comparison for you? What if CX declined to honour holds?

But if we're making assumptions, weren't you the one who was pondering legal action against CX if the fare wasn't honoured?

Meanwhile, you were certainly the member who was stating you would see CX in court if the airline tried to come after you for failing to take the last segment.
