CAUTION - TURNAROUND
"One customer did have issues. Wang Guanran, who documents his travels on hktravelblog.com, had his plans to travel to New York on Wednesday cut short when he was prevented from flying by immigration officials in Vietnam... he was detained by Vietnamese immigration officials, who said it was illegal to return to his city of origin while in transit." - Source:SCMP, 2 January 2019

Visa Information: check out the Vietnam visa/VOA thread in the Asia forum. You can get either a visa on arrival where you get the stamp on arrival) or a "looseleaf" visa in advance from a VN Consulate in the US (which allows you to go straight to the immigration queue). There are sometimes lines for the VOA stamp and so the loosleaf approach can save you some time.

Seat Assignments

per NWPlatinum below - Cathay blocks out all seats except for 2D for some reason. I never understood the reasoning behind this but in any event just contact them for a seat assignment and they’ll let you have your choice. They like to block out seats for people with bassinets and babies. But you can usually get 2A, which is the best see if you’re solo traveler. Just say I want seat 2A and I’ll move if requested at the airport (never was asked to move)

Basic Visa Options for US Citizens
1. One month, one entry
2. One month, multiple entries
3. Three months, one entry
4. Three months, multiple entries
5. One year, multiple entries

Everyone needs an e-visa approval before boarding if they will enter the country. (e.g. clear customs). Connecting flights - even on separate tickets - do not require a visa IF IF IF the connecting airline has a counter in the transit area. (The airline may have their own rules.) Going back to the same country is not allowed without clearing customs first.

Expect the visa check at your point of departure. (Computer will flag your ticket.) The actual stamp is received on arrival (in most cases). (There is also the possibility of a visa insert with no need to go to 'visa on arrival'.)

Chargeback - really?
Honestly, CX has been very fair IMHO, even honouring the F fares...I can see the point Re: fare conditions, but honestly, I think most of us will understand that CX is just making sure to have SOME control over this.
They've been a good sport about this, I think those who booked should do the same.

they have been absolutely reasonable in honouring the fares. doesn't mean that i and others shouldn't be permitted to change dates in accordance with the fare rules (and thus contract of carriage). i understand if they're not letting people cancel for free (after 24 hr), or change in the first few days where they pulled all A space. that's in accordance with the fare. whether something is "reasonable" can go either way.

anyways, if the cc issuer doesn't agree with me, cx/ota will prevail in the chargeback. i'd just hope it doesn't come to a dispute in the first place.

LOL. I haven't seen a single case of mistake fare where date change does not cause a re-price, at least the ones I flew. Go ahead and throw a tantrum but I suggest not booking mistake fares in the future.

All this talk of chargeback makes me realise why airlines are increasingly just cancelling tickets when they make mistakes (as was the case here as CX have admitted).

Why bother dealing with all the problems that ensue from being honourable and standing by your mistakes if you can just cancel all tickets, restore normality and avoid long and protracted issues with chargebacks and unreasonable requests for up to a year into the future?

We need to be careful that we don’t kill the goose that lays the golden eggs as that would be detrimental to everyone.

"use any historical fare / provide the best fare to passenger"
The $900 fare is a historical fare, which is the best available. I don't have a problem with flying the return, but if they are not honoring the fare rules of the ticket, then that's a problem.

---------------
AFTER DEPARTURE
---------------
RE-PRICE WITH BELOW OPTIONS AND PROVIDE THE BEST
FARE TO PASSENGER -
1. IF SAME ROUTING AND BOOKING CLASS - USE ANY
CX/KA HISTORICAL FARE FOR RE-PRICE AND NEW
TICKET MAY BE EQUAL/HIGHER OR LOWER THAN THE
PREVIOUS TICKET OR
2. USE ANY HISTORICAL CX/KA FARE FOR RE-PRICE AND
NEW TICKET MUST BE EQUAL OR HIGHER VALUE THAN
THE PREVIOUS TICKET.

They are honouring the rules, there is just very limited availability open to rebook into.

If people really need to change their plans they can, of course, up-fare or cancel and rebook another ticket (possibly on another airline).

The number of people looking a gift horse in the mouth here amazes me.

Word.
The vast majority of us here are aware of the risks associated with booking fares like these. That's one of them, and to be honest, CX has been very very nice and quite open about this one. It's understandable they don't wanna mess up their inventory for a year.

I'm with you that the approach of a cc charge back over this is complete crap and people definitely didn't study the fare rules expecting a fully flex ticket when booking this EF.

However they are not honoring the fare rules. The fare rules are clear about being able to change the date on these tickets at any time. I don't have a problem with paying the $100 penalty either.

My personal reason why I want to rebook is when this came up I booked an 11 day trip which I deemed sufficient. Then I took advantage of a free Alaska cruise I got from MGM and as it's reserved right now it'll be a bit tight, leaving me just 3.5 days to relax. That's entirely my fault but I'd still like to rebook and availability is definitely there in A class, yet CX is difficult now.

So ok, we're not allowed to change without reprice before departure. What about AFTER departure as it's usually allowed for each ticket? Are they restricting that as well? Because that would go against any and all customs people are used to with airline tickets. I can wait until I flew off my first segments but I'll insist on being able to change the return for the $100 change fee.

Just because most people don't read and understand fare rules before booking tickets doesn't mean it's more OK for airlines to change the conditions of the ticket after the fact. Airlines regularly point to fare rules when charging people fees for changes or cancellations. Why shouldn't consumers be able to take fare rules seriously as well?

While I agree it's nice they're partially honoring this fare, I don't think it's OK for them to change the conditions of the ticket without offering free refunds. I personally purchased my tickets because they clearly allowed date changes at historical prices. Changing that part of the rules while insisting on a $300 cancellation fee if you don't like their change in conditions is pretty questionable.

I'd compare it to an airline accepting bookings on a first class sale fare, downgrading everyone to business, and then insisting on a $300 cancellation fee if you don't like the change. Would some people be happy that they're at least in business class? Sure. But it's not what you originally purchased. And if you do that, you should allow people to refund their tickets for free.

I agree with this, but IMO we still ended up in one of the better scenarios. People have been able to change J, and F (there were at least two windows), and waiver of cancellation fee has been reported a couple times upthread as well.

The most we could reasonably expect CX to do in this situation isn't to open A space, but instead just formally state the restrictions they've been imposing all along. If they had just stated conditions on 1/1, we might not have been able to sneak changes through (although maybe CX would have offered refunds then).

you're sidestepping my point. there is A/J inventory available on the dates i would like to change to, using a US POS (since I ticketed using an OTA). regardless of whether I'm "playing fairly" or not, the fare rules very clearly state that there should not be repricing of the fare at the current $19000 level should there be availability using the same routing and fare class. which there is. in this situation, they are absolutely not honoring the fare rules.

The alternative (to prevent people changing the heck out of their very reasonable tickets) would have been to zero out A space till end of year, effectively ending any non-full fare F fares to be sold out of VN in 2019 & probably (due to after-departure-changes) between HK and JFK/ORD/YVR as well. Clearly not a route CX wanted to take, or should be expected to take IMHO.
So yes, theyre ignoring their own fare rules, but I'm quite sure that they will be more than happy to waive the cancellation fee if a passenger decides not to travel. To me, its a game. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose. If the airline is nice/reasonable about their mistake, I'll not push my luck. If they arent (yes, I'm talking to you, Alitalia - I flew that Christmas sale despite getting cancelled/messed up two times), then its a different story.

For my part, I'm happy CX is honoring these very generous tickets, and I think the majority of us here feel the same. Nobody thought this was going to happen.

At the end of the day CX could have cancelled all of these tickets. I personally don't think we're entitled to the fare conditions given the circumstances and CX has been more than accommodating in offering refunds to those who could no longer make the purchased ticket work for them.

Context matters here.

CX should have quickly made a decision to either:
a) immediately cancel all tickets, full refund, or
b) honor the mistake fares AND apply whatever new restrictions they felt were appropriate, but allowing cancellation any time without penalty

Most of the noise here would go away
