CAUTION - TURNAROUND
"One customer did have issues. Wang Guanran, who documents his travels on hktravelblog.com, had his plans to travel to New York on Wednesday cut short when he was prevented from flying by immigration officials in Vietnam... he was detained by Vietnamese immigration officials, who said it was illegal to return to his city of origin while in transit." - Source:SCMP, 2 January 2019

Visa Information: check out the Vietnam visa/VOA thread in the Asia forum. You can get either a visa on arrival where you get the stamp on arrival) or a "looseleaf" visa in advance from a VN Consulate in the US (which allows you to go straight to the immigration queue). There are sometimes lines for the VOA stamp and so the loosleaf approach can save you some time.

Seat Assignments

per NWPlatinum below - Cathay blocks out all seats except for 2D for some reason. I never understood the reasoning behind this but in any event just contact them for a seat assignment and they’ll let you have your choice. They like to block out seats for people with bassinets and babies. But you can usually get 2A, which is the best see if you’re solo traveler. Just say I want seat 2A and I’ll move if requested at the airport (never was asked to move)

Basic Visa Options for US Citizens
1. One month, one entry
2. One month, multiple entries
3. Three months, one entry
4. Three months, multiple entries
5. One year, multiple entries

Everyone needs an e-visa approval before boarding if they will enter the country. (e.g. clear customs). Connecting flights - even on separate tickets - do not require a visa IF IF IF the connecting airline has a counter in the transit area. (The airline may have their own rules.) Going back to the same country is not allowed without clearing customs first.

Expect the visa check at your point of departure. (Computer will flag your ticket.) The actual stamp is received on arrival (in most cases). (There is also the possibility of a visa insert with no need to go to 'visa on arrival'.)

I think it's 350% toward earned miles but only 150% toward EQM on AS. The 200% "additional bonus" doesn't count.

Obviously, he'll be to re-enter the terminal with his Air Asia boarding pass, but will he still be able to access the CX F lounges using either the inbound F boarding pass or the outbound next day boarding pass to DAD?
I've been denied entry in HKG when my connecting flight is on a non-OneWorld carrier -- but think your friend has a reasonably good chance with the onward boarding pass to DAD.

Yea, the connecting flight is on Cathay Dragon. It's just the fact that it's the next morning that makes me wonder.

I bought one ticket from DAD to NYC on first. Called Cathay Hong Kong trying to change the date. Even tho I found J+A+A+J class available on expertflyer. It seems if I do direct search on Cathay website or on matrix.itasoftware.com everything appears to be on F. The phone agent also says she couldn’t find it around May, June period...I guess they pulled A from the system again...

Quick trip report, it may be helpful to some. I was fortunate that this trip came up both after I had booked the SIN DO and that I had placed padding in my schedule in case I needed to "fly around for no reason". So I was already had my Asia trip planned, was going to be in SIN and with original return from NRT. I changed my middle flights to position SIN-DAD the night before, non-stop on Jetstar Asia, very nice flight. I stayed in the Grand Mercure, nice hotel about 3 miles from airport. I used Grab for my car service, quick and cheap, takes US credit cards. Entering DAD I had gotten the online $25 E-Visa. Immigration was quick and simple. Planned outbound next day with 7 hours in HKG, totally loved the Pier and Wing lounges, had massage, ate in dining room, etc. Well worth it. Then did 34 hours in seat 2K on my 777-300 back and forth HKG-JFK-HKG, with about 3 hours on the ground in JFK. Went through immigration/customs in JFK normally, went back in, nobody seemed to know/care I was doing turnaround. Carry-on luggage only, if you have checked bag that would certainly complicate things. When checking in I felt the agent (manned by AA) would likely want my Vietnam visa. I'm not telling you to do this, but I had taken the PDF of the E-Visa I got, edited the visa number (at the top) and the dates to match this trip and printed out a copy. I had guessed, apparently correctly, that while the agent would check that I had a Visa (she did seem to write down something), that she would have no way to actually validate it. YMMV. So back through security, quick shower and rest at the Flagship lounge and back to 2K. New crew (of course) so again no one knew I had just gotten off. Another great flight/meal/snooze, into HKG. After landing I looked at CX app and thought about cancelling last segment, I've seen that mentioned elsewhere. I decided not to, the wording on the app made me feel like I might cancel the whole reservation (not that that really makes sense). In any case, just didn't board the DAD flight. I had booked a separate NH flight back to NRT for my return, I felt it would be better to not have a flight in the CX or Oneworld system just in case. No emails or anything from CX, nothing on my credit cards, so for now, no repercussions of not taking last leg.

All in all, a great time back and forth - enjoy!

I want to change my dates of travel for HAN-HKG-SFO and back flight. ExpertFlyer and ITA Matrix show availability for the transpac segment in A class, but Orbitz agent says there's no availability in A. Why would this be happening? Anyone have an idea? It doesn't seem like a married segment issue - I ssearched for both segments together on ExpertFlyer and there's availability. But the Orbitz agent says the SFO-HKG A class is not available on GDS.

Up thread the two main conclusions are that it's a POS issue (EF doesn't have Vietnam POS), or CX is just not allowing first class changes.

It seems this might be the issue I'm facing. How can I find the point of sale of my original booking? I bought it on Orbitz and I'm in the US. Should the inventory show availability for the same POS as my original booking for the OTA to be able to change it?

They are applying married segment logic, even on stopovers (probably because they don't publish an A fare HKG-JFK). Expertflyer shows A class as available, however, it doesn't allow Vietnam POS so we don't know true A class availability.

Try booking DAD-JFK, one way in First class on the Cathay website. If it's $18k it means no A class availabilty, if A class is available the fare will be around $12k. If you do see that fare for $12k, login and try changing your date to that and it should allow it for $100 and you don't have to speak to anyone.

You might have better luck changing with OTA's, if you booked through one, as they are pricing out USA POS.

I have seen short periods 15-20 minutes where A class availability opens up online and then disappears. This is quite infrequent, haven't seen it in a few days.
Thanks for the tips. My original booking is US POS (because the OTA said they only sell US POS). EF shows A class availability for US POS for the new dates I like. But the OTA cannot see any A class availability - they say that they see 'AL' (waitlisted) for all the dates where EF shows A class availability. Seems like CX is blocking out the A class inventory, or is the GDS returning Vietnam POS even though the OTA person is searching for US POS?

Two issues here. In HKG the lounges are departure lounges. You have to be in the (sterile) departures concourse to access them. To get there, you need a valid 'same day' boarding pass. 20 hours later may not satisfy the 'same day' requirement and be enough to you though transit security.

If you do make it through, you then have to enter HKG from departures, rather than arrivals. This requires notification to airport staff, and someone will have to take you there. I think someone reported recently that this was possible, but took a fair bit of time (was it 45 minutes?)

This is assuming you want to arrive, go through security, enter departures, use the lounge for a meal, and then head to your hotel in Hong Kong. If you are genuinely wanting to stay in departures for 20 hours I'd advise against this! Way too long. And the CX lounges close.

I would try to make a dummy booking on Orbitz for the exact flights that you want to change your existing booking to. I think Orbitz shows the fare class on the summary page, before you even need to enter any of your details. If it shows the fare class you're being told is unavailable, ask Orbitz why that's the case if they alleged there isn't availability.

CX upgauged my DAD-HKG from an A320 to a A321. Wonder if its because the business class cabin was sold out.

Any one else planning a domestic morning turn in DAD? Flying Vietnam Air 6:00 AM from Hanoi, lands at 7:20 AM in DAD. KA flight is at 9:50 AM. Know its risky but it was the only thing I could make work.

Tried making dummy booking. A new one way ticket is available in A class. But Orbitz agent can't change it because is shows "F6AL" - according to the agent I spoke to, that AL means A class is locked. The agent yesterday says "L" means "waitlist", which is wrong. The Orbitz agent called Cathay while I was on hold. Cathay said the A class is available for new bookings but not for changing existing bookings, which doesn't make sense to me. Apparently, Cathay doesn't want people to change the tickets (without repricing) that they booked under this deal. So, they locked the A class inventory for changes but it's still available for new bookings..

Interesting concept, honor the fare but not the fare conditions (without disclosure). I think CX should be transparent about their intentions, since people make plans assuming they have flexibility to change flights.
