Visa Information: check out the Vietnam visa/VOA thread in the Asia forum. You can get either a visa on arrival where you get the stamp on arrival) or a "looseleaf" visa in advance from a VN Consulate in the US (which allows you to go straight to the immigration queue). There are sometimes lines for the VOA stamp and so the loosleaf approach can save you some time.
Seat Assignments
per NWPlatinum below - Cathay blocks out all seats except for 2D for some reason. I never understood the reasoning behind this but in any event just contact them for a seat assignment and they’ll let you have your choice. They like to block out seats for people with bassinets and babies. But you can usually get 2A, which is the best see if you’re solo traveler. Just say I want seat 2A and I’ll move if requested at the airport (never was asked to move)

Everyone needs an e-visa approval before boarding if they will enter the country. (e.g. clear customs). Connecting flights - even on separate tickets - do not require a visa IF IF IF the connecting airline has a counter in the transit area. (The airline may have their own rules.) Going back to the same country is not allowed without clearing customs first.
Expect the visa check at your point of departure. (Computer will flag your ticket.) The actual stamp is received on arrival (in most cases). (There is also the possibility of a visa insert with no need to go to 'visa on arrival'.)

I booked through OTA and was being offered J class change on the website on A ticket. I called and they were able to change dates in A class for 100 dollars. Same flights on different days. Very happy with outcome.

Reading Is Fundamental
My situation is a bit different. I am not looking to change origin or destination -- those will remain the same. Instead of HKG-YVR, I wanted to try HKG-JFK-YVR to get more miles. This is listed as a possible routing for HKG-YVR. Just can't get it to change without a big reprice.
I read your posts three times. I even wondered "How can this person fly 75K miles a year and not understand direct route mileage credits?" I hope you are successful in getting your routing changed to HKG-JFK-YVR, and I hope to meet you sometime when I'm paying attention.

was bored waiting for my flight at the Wing F, so I thought I would inquire about lounge access for people booked on VN J flights ex-HKG, thinking that it is these guys afterall who admit people into the lounge.

You will be directed to VN’s contract lounge provided you have access entitlement.

was bored waiting for my flight at the Wing F, so I thought I would inquire about lounge access for people booked on VN J flights ex-HKG, thinking that it is these guys afterall who admit people into the lounge.

I booked direct through CX A Class. Was on the phone to them yesterday 4 different calls and not 1 of them would allow me to change the booking without paying Ł47k. That includes dates where A Class was available. One of the managers said you are lucky to even still have the fair, don't push your luck. My response was You have honoured the fair so I should be able to change the date if the same class is available.

Yes, you may change the date but the fare will be repriced. This has nothing to do with whether the same fare class is available or not.

They are applying married segment logic, even on stopovers (probably because they don't publish an A fare HKG-JFK). Expertflyer shows A class as available, however, it doesn't allow Vietnam POS so we don't know true A class availability.
Try booking DAD-JFK, one way in First class on the Cathay website. If it's $18k it means no A class availabilty, if A class is available the fare will be around $12k. If you do see that fare for $12k, login and try changing your date to that and it should allow it for $100 and you don't have to speak to anyone.
You might have better luck changing with OTA's, if you booked through one, as they are pricing out USA POS.
I have seen short periods 15-20 minutes where A class availability opens up online and then disappears. This is quite infrequent, haven't seen it in a few days.

Just tried to switch dates for my CX-booked (not through OTA) flights online. Looks like CX is adding a $100 change fee AND repricing fare. FWIW, I have not flown my first leg yet - not sure if that will help reprice the return (which I'm trying to change). I have tried several different dates, all same result. Has anybody who booked direct with CX been able to successfully change their dates (same routing)?

After being on hold with OTA for quite a while, I successfully pushed back my departure date back with $100 airline change fee and sizable OTA change fee.
Return leg had to be changed slightly too because original date of departure doesn't work anymore.
