Visa Information: check out the Vietnam visa/VOA thread in the Asia forum. You can get either a visa on arrival where you get the stamp on arrival) or a "looseleaf" visa in advance from a VN Consulate in the US (which allows you to go straight to the immigration queue). There are sometimes lines for the VOA stamp and so the loosleaf approach can save you some time.
Seat Assignments
per NWPlatinum below - Cathay blocks out all seats except for 2D for some reason. I never understood the reasoning behind this but in any event just contact them for a seat assignment and they’ll let you have your choice. They like to block out seats for people with bassinets and babies. But you can usually get 2A, which is the best see if you’re solo traveler. Just say I want seat 2A and I’ll move if requested at the airport (never was asked to move)

Everyone needs an e-visa approval before boarding if they will enter the country. (e.g. clear customs). Connecting flights - even on separate tickets - do not require a visa IF IF IF the connecting airline has a counter in the transit area. (The airline may have their own rules.) Going back to the same country is not allowed without clearing customs first.
Expect the visa check at your point of departure. (Computer will flag your ticket.) The actual stamp is received on arrival (in most cases). (There is also the possibility of a visa insert with no need to go to 'visa on arrival'.)

Sorry if this question has been answered, but have not seen it in mentioned in the last week or so of posts.
If possible, I would like to change my flight to come home 1 day earlier. I am flying J on han-hkg and A on HKG-SFO. If I see J5/A2 on the flight 1 day earlier, does that mean I should be able to change without getting repriced to a much higher fare? I would call CX directly, but I booked through an OTA and at least online they are not showing any changes available.

What travel agency did you book with? I think what people have been saying is the best way to try and change your reservation is online first. I booked my ticket through Orbitz, and I was able to change my reservation if I wanted for $185. Though I decided to just keep my dates.

Apparently it's necessary for me to state a few facts, lest any more members make assumptions about me:
- I am not disputing the charge. I will not dispute the charge. I never had any intention of disputing the charge.
- I am flying as ticketed, which included post-purchase, pre-departure flight changes at the stated $100 change fee.
- I do not live in the United States and I have advocated neither for legal recourse or a credit card chargeback.

For anyone who got in on the fare and is actually going to use the trip to Vietnam for travel and tourism purposes, I have spent holidays in Saigon for coming up on 15 years and it's a great city. The Park Hyatt Saigon is my preferred address and its not to pricey (and you can sign up for the Hyatt credit card and get enough points for a few nights). We literally go to Saigon to eat and shop, food is incredible and it's not one of those places where you are likely to get sick eating local. There is a great windsurfing/kitesurfing beach about 3 hours drive up north from Saigon, Mui Ne that has a nice beach when the wind isn't blowing like piss during the wind sport season (Dec-April) and offers amazing grilled seafood along the beach.
Also within easy flight for a day or three is Siem Reap and Angkor Watt, what a treasure. And Laos is not far either. All three countries, Cambodia, Vietnam and Laos are more popular than 15 years ago but still way under the radar in terms of what's there, cost, treatment as a tourist, etc.
Live it up a bit, I bet you'll end the trip thinking that CX F wasn't even close to the high point of it ;-)

Has anyone had any luck with alternate routing?
I have HAN-HKG-YVR booked. In order to get more miles, I have been trying to rebook through JFK (HAN-HKG-JFK-YVR) for extra miles but it seems to reprice a lot higher, even when there is my original class A space (according to EF).
If you have had luck I would love to hear how you did it!

Please, do not ask me why CX robot refunded me $0.16 for both passengers when adjusting my trip, as I did adjust both segments (4 flights) to new days, and never ever called a human CSR from CX.

$0.16 is probably an exchange rate difference. HKD is generally pegged to the USD, but small differences can occur.

Ohh, that is an easy one. I didn't get $100 back, I actually got charged $0 for changing the tickets because I booked all my itinerary in C inventory for $25 USD extra per segment (as rojo was explaining). I paid around $725 USD for each ticket in J all in from DAD-HKG-USA-HKG-DAD, and that allowed me to insure myself and my SO on future schedule changes from my side, as long as there is C inventory available on the married segments. I never re-booked, I just changed the dates free of charge

HAN-HKG-SFO-HKG-HAN booked in C, 2 adult, 1 child, 1 infant.
If i change the date and the infant is over 2, how would a reprice work, historical prices ?
From the post above a C fare would mean no cancel cost ?
