Visa Information: check out the Vietnam visa/VOA thread in the Asia forum. You can get either a visa on arrival where you get the stamp on arrival) or a "looseleaf" visa in advance from a VN Consulate in the US (which allows you to go straight to the immigration queue). There are sometimes lines for the VOA stamp and so the loosleaf approach can save you some time.
Seat Assignments
per NWPlatinum below - Cathay blocks out all seats except for 2D for some reason. I never understood the reasoning behind this but in any event just contact them for a seat assignment and they’ll let you have your choice. They like to block out seats for people with bassinets and babies. But you can usually get 2A, which is the best see if you’re solo traveler. Just say I want seat 2A and I’ll move if requested at the airport (never was asked to move)

Everyone needs an e-visa approval before boarding if they will enter the country. (e.g. clear customs). Connecting flights - even on separate tickets - do not require a visa IF IF IF the connecting airline has a counter in the transit area. (The airline may have their own rules.) Going back to the same country is not allowed without clearing customs first.
Expect the visa check at your point of departure. (Computer will flag your ticket.) The actual stamp is received on arrival (in most cases). (There is also the possibility of a visa insert with no need to go to 'visa on arrival'.)

Grrrrr, it appears as if the $99 usd change options have disappeared again!
Reports this morning that they are back, just went to check and back to the same problem of it forcing me into a business class rebooking and an excessive change fee!
Is anyone else still able to change for the $100?

Good thing I read the Fare Rules before booking my trip, as now C inventory is open (and of course, J is open and so is W, while F and Y are sold out for the flights I want) and it allows me to change without a fee.
System wanted me to buy D inventory for $25 USD less per segment. Now I am reaping the benefits for not doing that

Oh damn. The second snowiest city? That does not bode well for the middle of February travel. I'm now looking at the 3.45pm arrival on DL, which gives me about six hours before check-in even opens. There is a later DL flight, arriving 8.22pm which could potentially serve as a backup if the 3.45pm arrival is delayed or even cancelled. There's plenty of availability on that flight at the moment so I don't need to book just yet.
I appreciate all the knowledgeable advice.

I don't want to overplay the risk: The chances are that you'll make the connection with oodles of time to spare if you arrive on that 3:45 pm DL flight. But for that particular route at that time of year, it's a considerably higher risk than warm-weather connections.
If you were to fly in the previous day, you could certainly head into Manhattan and make a good day/evening of it in NYC (weather permitting, of course).

Just to offer data points on cancellation if it helps any. I canceled 3 A/J tickets within the 24-hour period, and the full refund amounts came in just today on my AMEX (so ~8 business days). I booked directly on the CX site. Glad at least that the cancellation language on the website is consistent with my experience.

For me, as I booked in C inventory all my flights, it is telling me CX will refund me $0.16 cents
Good thing I read the Fare Rules before booking my trip, as now C inventory is open (and of course, J is open and so is W, while F and Y are sold out for the flights I want) and it allows me to change without a fee.
System wanted me to buy D inventory for $25 USD less per segment. Now I am reaping the benefits for not doing that

More data points on CX first class inventory in the face of this error fare: If not the right forum please move. I saw F Alaska award availabilty to add my wife on the return leg. I saw it on british airways website stating one available then waited for the AS calendar to show. When I did the AS agent said two first class seats were available and I snagged one. So for at least that flight there seems to be as much F award availability on CX as in the past.

Quick data point - looking at JFK-HKG from now until mid-February (using BA's website), there was exactly 1 FC seat being offered. So 30+ days, 1 seat... that is well below the historical counts.
OTOH - Business class has lots of seats overall, more closely resembling historical availability.

I’m not trying to be greedy but is there anyway to change the ticket to get a partial refund? For example the Vietnam-Chicago was much cheaper than Vietnam-JFK. Is there anyway to bring the price down to what was offered or that ship sailed long ago?

I'm struggling to get Cathay to give a full refund on these error fares canceled within 24 hours. They are insisting that I booked thru the Vietnam site and therefore don't get free 24 hour cancellation, despite the fact that I search from the US site and probably got redirected to the Vietnam site without my knowledge.
The Twitter Team was previously responsive and kept denying my requests, and now they're ignoring me altogether. Any advice on who to contact next? I've filed a DOT complaint but due to the government shutdown a response is unlikely.
Also if anyone has had any experience canceling an F ticket after 24 hours, but still get a full refund? I would think it's in Cathay's interests to cancel as many of these voluntary tickets as possible.
